| Posted: 27 Aug 2012 10:29 AM PDT Spiders are not very beautiful insects, but they can be really interesting because of the web they weave with great skill and use it for hunting afterwards. A spider’s body is simple in design and as interesting as its work: a round body in the middle, surrounded by long thin legs on the sides. It is sort of funny, but this description also applies to this Karlsson Spider Clock. And except for the stylized shape, they do not share anything else. This clock is beautiful and colourful, with a strong round shaped center where you can see the clock arms showing time, with the clock mechanism on the back. Every “leg” has a coloured ball at the end and also represents a number that should be on the clock dial. The whole disc is divided into small parts that are supposed to stand for five minutes and each time the colour of the ball changes. The clock is perfect to be placed against a white background, as it will bring a touch of youth and will value its design best. The clock is made of metal and plastic and is big enough to be noticed – 32 cm diameter. It needs one AA battery to work and you can purchase it for £50.00 from Urban Outfitters. | The industrial Pulley double pendant Posted: 27 Aug 2012 08:46 AM PDT The pulley is a simple invention that has not only functional benefits but also aesthetical implications. One beautiful example would be this industrial Pulley double pendant. It is an exact reproduction of an antique light and it functions on a die-cast pulley system. The pendant has a simple design with strong industrial influences, just like the one that inspired its design. It moves up or down to provide light to a certain space or to focus the light on a specific area. This is possible thanks to a counterweight that allows it to hold its position. Available at the price of $329, this beautiful pendant would make a distinguished and unique addition to a variety of living room decors and it would also be an interesting focal for the dining room, above the table.
The structure of the pendant is made of metal with the look of cast iron with a bronze finish. It has two simple and elegant shades made of clear, ribbed glass. The position of the pendant can be adjusted with a center handle. It uses two 60W max bulbs and its overall dimensions are 12½” diam., 32″W x 35″-60″H. It provides warm, diffuse light and it works nicely with the incandescent Edison frost bulbs that can be purchased separately and that match with the texture of the shades and with the whole industrial yet delicate design. | Posted: 27 Aug 2012 07:40 AM PDT Sometimes simple and practical things are more useful and nicer than the ones that appear to be more elegant and more sophisticated. Their beauty appears in their simplicity, the huge emotional impact has on us and the way it becomes useful to us. Take for example a flower. It can bring much joy and can generate more emotions than an expensive jewel or some clothes which become out of fashion or deteriorate in time. The same thing may happen with a simple piece of furniture which can be used for several things or you can update it when you feel the need to. It is also the case of this multifunctional, dynamic Ramirez Bookshelf, designed by the team at Mob (Jesus Irizar, Lucia Soto and Andrea Flores). This solid, wood bookshelf, with a diagonal frame has a dynamic look. Its design creates a floating effect as if it is in a continual movement so that you have the impression that it is ready to fold all the time.
On its airy shelves you can put your favorite books, decorative items or even flower pots. The use of rough wood adds it a rustic touch which makes you think of those wonderful artisanal objects created by the talented craftsmen. The diagonal frame makes of it an excellent room divider too. Thus your rustic décor will become more attractive and can also enjoy the practicality of this nice wood item. The fact that is spacious and airy will offer you the opportunity to store many things on its shelves. | A swimmer’s paradise in Buenos Aires Posted: 27 Aug 2012 05:52 AM PDT As the extensive pools might suggests, this residence's homeowner loves to swim. So he took this passion of his and brought it to a whole new level while designing his new home. The house is located in an exclusive waterfront neighborhood of Buenos Aires. It was designed by architect Alejandro Amoedo and it's a home that celebrates the swimming pool. The architect had to deal with a few challenges when designing and building this house. One of them was to make the house seem modern but without standing out too much. But given its design and all the pools involved in the project, the house seemed extravagant at first. The challenge was to find a way to balance simplicity with originality. The result was this amazing 4,919 square foot residence. It has three bedrooms and six baths as well as a series of indoor and outdoor pools.
There's a very subtle transition between interior and exterior areas and it's mostly due to the visual continuity created by the indoor and outdoor pools as well as the lagoon. The indoor pools made decorating the house a little more difficult than usual. For example, it wasn't easy to find a good place for the TV and the ideal solution turned out to be inexistent. The only solution was to place it on the wall adjacent to the pool, not the best location for a TV given the proximity to water. The rest of the décor is simple, modern and features neutral colors. | The splendid glass-vaulted arches of the Galleria in Milan Posted: 27 Aug 2012 05:04 AM PDT Galleria, also known as 'Galleria Vittoria Emanuele II', is a unique place located in Milan. It's a glass-covered street that connects two of the city's most famous landmarks, The Duomo and La Scala and it's a famous area all over the globe. This amazing street is entirely covered by an arching glass and cast iron roof and it has become a landmark itself. Located in the center of Milan, Galleria is in fact a double arcade. Two glass-vaulted arcades are intersecting in an octagon and they are supported by columns. Such a structure is not only impressive because of its architectural details but also because of practical reasons. Since it covers the entire street, it also protects everything from weather, noise and filth. The Galleria was named after Vittorio Emanuele II who was the first king of the Kingdom of Italy. Originally designed in 1861, it was then built by Giuseppe Mengoni between 1865 and 1877.
The street connects two famous landmarks and thus has two entrances, one at Piazza del Duomo and the other at Piazza della Scala. The Galleria is a commercial area and, in order to maintain a cohesive and uniform look, all the commercial activities inside must display an insignia with gold writing on a black background. The arched vault is 32 meters high and its skeleton required the use of 353 tons of iron. The octagonal roof is 47 meters high. Inside the Galleria are some of the city's oldest shops and restaurants. It also features many luxury goods shops such as Prada, Gucci or Louis Vuitton.{picture sources:wikipedia}. | 5 Tips For Using Patterns That Match With Your Oriental Rug Posted: 27 Aug 2012 02:22 AM PDT Oriental rugs are something that will probably be around for a long time. They have become popular quickly and they are very appreciated all over the world. Also, they are very durable and they last for a lifetime and more. But they are also difficult to integrate in an ever changing décor. So what exactly can we do to match and pair them with the rest of our furniture? Here are a few ideas. 1. A constant color theme. An effective way of integrating an oriental rug in a space such as the living room for example is to use patterns in the same color family. Try to maintain a uniform visual effect. In this case we have a rug with blue and brown shades. Notice that the pillows and the artwork have been chosen to match those colors. It's simple and it's effective.
2. Contrasting neutrals. If, on the other hand, you don't wish to enhance the same visual effect your oriental rug has on the décor, you can try to dilute it. The best to do that is by using neutrals. By doing that you blur whatever colors the rug has and to divert the attention towards other sources. Also, this way you can safely avoid using colors and patterns that would overwhelm each other, resulting in a tiresome interior décor. 3. A monochromatic décor. Another way of diverting attention from the oriental rug is to create a monochromatic interior décor. This way you will allow the rug to blend in. For example, you can use the same colors that the rug has for the walls, furniture and decorations. If there are too many of them, choose the dominant shades. This way, even though the pattern from the rug stands out, it still remains in the background and becomes less invasive. 4. Matching furniture. A similar idea would be use the same colors found in the rug for the furniture. For example, if your oriental rug features shades of brown, try to replicate the same color in the furniture. Other more vivid colors that would not be suitable for items such as cabinets or wall units can be used for the armchairs, the coffee table or for other smaller accessories. Even though the pattern of the rug will still be an accent element, the overall effect will be uniform. 5. Complementary patterns. Just because your oriental rug features strong and eye-catching patterns this doesn't mean you can't have other patterns in the room as well. In fact, in the right circumstances, this may effect help diminish its effect. In this case we have a bold print on the rug and a less invasive but still eye-catching print on the armchair. It diverts some of the attention in that direction, making the rug a little less striking. Picture sources:1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. | Posted: 27 Aug 2012 12:52 AM PDT The first thing that I bought when I moved into my home was a coat rack because we did not have a closet to store the clothes, so we suddenly realized coat racks are actually important, even if most of the times nobody notices them. Well, this Grid Coat Rack is a bit unusual, something different from all the coat racks I have seen so far. It is made of iron and aluminum and it has a grid design, hence the name. It needs to be hanging on the wall, either in horizontal or vertical position, depending on your needs and the shape and size of the place where you put it. It is easy to mount on the wall and it has a nice and “invisible” keyhole mechanism that helps you with this.
The coats will be hung on the seven disk pegs that are displayed in a zig-zag model on the metallic grid, leaving the colour of the wall being seen through the grid. The coat rack is simple, but nice and it has a certain patina that gives it an antique look. The item is made in India, but it ships everywhere in the world as long as you purchase it online for $79.95. | Posted: 27 Aug 2012 12:00 AM PDT Every time a have a foreign friend I think how his/her house looks like. And I always associate the home with the country`s specificities. That`s why I imagine a French`s house very chic, a English one very elegant and a Spanish one very colorful. Well, you should see how happy a house looks in the Philippines'. The designers tried to bring some of the country`s atmosphere to the house, so the home became a tribute to the Pilipino spirit. Is created for am married couple, by the Buensalido Architects, in the capital, Manila and it is in fact a townhouse. From the outside, the home looks like a fancy hotel but when you see the interior, you can say for surely that is in fact a cozy and welcoming house. The aesthetic expression of the design is obtained through triangles that are a representation of some flaglets used in the local festivals.Philippines being a country where each day you can find a party somewhere, and following this custom, the house became a very colorful one. And, the way the architects choose to use the lights is impressive.
Little triangles mirrors in the walls play with the light and spread it trough the rooms. So, depending how many lights are turned on, the pattern of shadows is always changing. They don`t have to buy expensive paintings, because the walls are decorated differently every day. So, this is the perfect house to throw a party, because you don`t even have to decorate it. And, don't forget about the cozy and happy atmosphere. That not only characterizes the country, but also the people that live there.
