A classical British-style home interior

Posted: 25 Aug 2012 09:34 AM PDT

We didn't really pay much attention to it until now, but the British style is full of elegant surprises. In a typical British home everything is perfectly organized and nothing exists unless it has a purpose. Also, its interior décor is surprisingly vibrant and dynamic. Even though it has a series of characteristic features, this style is in fact an eclectic composition.

These are typical British-style homes. One of them is a beautiful flat located in North London and it seems to feature all the characteristics of this style. The overall impression is that there's a perpetual mix of old and new. Even a contemporary British home will have some vintage accents. That's because tradition is very important. This flat combines modernist pieces with antique Chesterfields and the result is a balanced mix and a chic décor.

In general, British-style interior are not one-note. For example, if you have a wingback chair you could place it next to a modern wire end table or a mid-century modern chair.

This way there will always be contrast. Another characteristic of this style includes high ceilings and tall windows along with carved mantels. They can be either modern or vintage and this makes them beautiful regardless of the period. As for the decorations, you will usually notice that British homes have large painting and artwork that have a rather dramatic effect without being too invasive.{pictures from site}.

5 ways of keeping your home cool without air conditioning

Posted: 25 Aug 2012 07:57 AM PDT

I think we can all agree that feeling the cold breeze coming from the air conditioning unit in a hot summer day can be divine. However, it's not the only way in which you can keep your house cool. There are other alternatives as well and they can be quite efficient. Also, they allow you to reduce the energy costs and to reduce the impact the air conditioning unit has on the environment. Let's take a look at some of them.

1. Cover the windows.

Your home would not be so hot if it wasn't for all the hot air coming through the windows. So if you know the problem all you have to do is fix it. Just cover the south and west-facing windows during the hottest part of the day. Use blinds for that. It's not much but it really helps.

2. Consider using ceiling fans.

They might just move the air around but they can be quite efficient. Ceiling fans are effective and also low-cost which makes them very popular. They keep the air circulating in the room and thus it makes it feel cooler. It might be just an impression but it's a convenient alternative.

3. Take advantage of the trees.

The trees can be real life-savers in a hot summer day. The shade they provide can make a big different in the temperature of your home. Of course, if you don't have any and you're planting them just now you will have to wait a while before they can actually help you. But there are also alternatives. Plants can be very useful too. For example, if you cover the exterior of your house with ivy the hot air will stay out during the summer and in during the winter.

4. Apply window tint.

Blinds and curtains can be very efficient but a window tint can do more than that. It cuts down on UV rays and this way your carpets and upholstery will no longer have to suffer, not to mention that they can make a big difference in hot summer days. If you use blinds and curtains in addition your home will basically be insulated from all the heat outside.

5. Insulate your home.

And speaking of insulation, we saved the best for last. Maybe you didn't realize by now but a well-insulated home doesn't just benefit from its effect during winter but also during summer. An insulated wall will prevent both cold and hot air from entering your home, depending on the time of the year. Of course, insulating the whole house can be expensive but it's a long-term solution that has more than one positive effect.

High Chair 64 by Alvar Aalto

Posted: 25 Aug 2012 07:33 AM PDT

Nature is marvelous and everything it gives us, but man has succeeded taming it and transforming it, turning it into unexpected little miracles just by the power of his imagination. That is what happens with all great artists, designers included. Alvar Aalto is a great designer who was famous back in the 1930s but whose work is still very much appreciated. This is because he made some gorgeous things by bending nature in order to fit his vision of it. And one amazing result of his work is this High Chair 64 by Alvar Aalto that he designed in 1935 but it is still manufactured in Finland by Artek.

This high chair looks great and is a bit different than a simple bar stool, as you can also use it near a normal table. The look of this chair is elegant and stylish, bringing glamour to any home. The high chair has a nice round seating on top of four wonderfully curved legs. They are obtained by bending the hard wood under high temperatures and after that adding some natural lacquer to the surface. You can choose the material for the chair from birch veneer, black or red linoleum or white laminate, all of them available. The price for this item is $575 and you can order it online from Hive Modern.

3-Tier Wire Bath Shelf

Posted: 24 Aug 2012 12:48 PM PDT

I do not know what you do, but I prefer having everything ready and handy when I am in the bathroom. It is true that I have two small kids, so I must watch them all the time, so it helps having everything within reach. That is why I think bathroom shelves are a lot more handy than bathroom cabinets, at least most times. This 3-Tier Wire Bath Shelf seems perfect for any family, for every home and every bathroom. First of all it saves space because it gets applied on the wall, leaving the floor space for other use, which can be important in a small bathroom.

The shelf has three tiers – which is in my opinion perfect – and is made of strong wire that will support the weight of the bath accessories and look great in black against the white background of the wall. Of course you can use the shelf in the simple version (available for $59) , having only the tiers and nothing more. But you can also choose to add some sophistication to your bathroom design and use the elegant bins made of solid canvas ($14). You can also use additional wire words that can be used as labels for every tier, in this case : this, that, whatever ($29). The item can be bought from PB Teen.

One thing that I admire the most is architectural designs. It would be interesting to see more of these in the near future.
