Eileen Gray inspired side table

Posted: 16 Aug 2012 11:11 AM PDT

Modern furniture is mostly made of metal. Somehow metal is associated with modernism while wood, though warmer and nicer to touch, is considered old fashioned. That is why this beautiful minimalist Eileen Gray inspired side table is quite a representative item for modern furniture. It is indeed a beautiful side table and it surprises you from the first sight with the shining metallic frame and interesting design. First you will notice the two sides of the table, one serving as table top and one as base. Both are circles and the base one is actually only three quarters of a circle and this makes it pretty stable.

These circles are thick rings that are made of stainless steel and they are connected by a strong stainless steel leg that is doubled by a thinner bar that is added for further support and also allows you to adjust the height depending on your needs. The upper side , that is the table top is made of tampered glass, so it is pretty safe even if it happens to fall and break. It is a beautiful modern side table and it is now available for £85.00  on Coco interiors web site.

Japanese one-story wooden house

Posted: 16 Aug 2012 09:49 AM PDT

Designing a house for a woman can be very challenging. There are usually lots of demands and everything has to be perfect. The attention to details is crucial. But designing a house for two women tops that. However, not everyone is the same and, in this case, this residence is surprisingly simple and austere. It's the M House and it's located in Tochigi, Japan.

The M House was a project developed by Hiroyuki Shinozaki Architects. It was built in 2012. The house covers an area of 63.87 square meters and it sits on a 138.75 square meter site. It's a one story structure that was designed for two women. Structurally, it looks like a series of small volumes organized around a center. In the middle there's a 6m by 6m space. The rest of the volumes are arranged around it, they radiate from the center.

These annex-like structures contain the rest of the spaces and they include the kitchen, the bathroom, the bedroom and the storage area. Even though, structurally, they are individual structures, they are all connected and covered by a large roof. They have wooden beams in the ceilings and they resemble a series of wooden boxes. In between them there's a series of gaps, these gaps serve as parking and entry spaces and they provide views towards the exterior.in the case of the living area, the gaps also provide natural light.

Enclume Deep Shelf Pot Rack

Posted: 16 Aug 2012 07:35 AM PDT

I think we all should know how to cook, at least the essentials because you never know when you will need it. Besides, if you are the one cooking, you will know for sure when it was cooked and what ingredients are in it, if it is made of natural things or not. Any way, ever since I got married I started watching all kinds of cooking shows on TV because they give you a lot of useful tips and information. And I saw the chefs had an impressive arsenal of pots and pans, but they do not stay in the cupboard; they are displayed in plain sight, hanging from a special support. Here is Enclume Deep Shelf Pot Rack, something I have been dreaming to have in my kitchen.

It may look sophisticated, but it actually has very simple design and it is very easy to use, making your kitchen the room where you feel most comfy and where you just need to stretch your arms and will find the right pot. It is mounted on the wall and is sturdy enough to support all your pots since it is made of hammered steel that has a protective wax finish. The pots get hanged by the 12 steel hooks  and can be bought for  $180.00 – $260.00 , depending on size.

3 DIY wicker basket projects

Posted: 16 Aug 2012 03:40 AM PDT

Wicker baskets are very practical and a great storage solution for spaces such as the bathroom. They are great storage containers and can be placed on open shelves or underneath a table. They are also eco-friendly and have a look that's suited for most styles and interior decors. Use them when there are not enough shelves or drawers in the bathroom or when you need something to store your gardening tools in. a wicker basket could also be used as a lovely bed for your pet.

1. DIY shelves for the bathroom wicker baskets.

If you plan on using them for storage in the bathroom, then you might also want to make some shelves for them to sit on. We'll show you how. This project is for three baskets. To make the shelves you'll also need some rounded pieces of wood, a piece of plywood, carpenter's glue, a brush or paint roller, sandpaper and a tape measure. Start by measuring the width of the baskets. Subtract 1.5 cm and make six parts. Mark the place where the bars will go, the ones that will serve as a frame or limit for the baskets.

Using carpenter's glue, attach the sticks. You can also paint all the wooden pieces in a color of your choice. Let them all dry before gluing all the pieces together. After the whole structure is ready, hang it on the wall. Now you have some nice shelves for your wicker baskets.

2. DIY wicker basket case.

For this project you will need a terraced round basket, wide rubber band, a strong cord, some large flat buttons, some fabric, scissors, thread and a sewing machine. First measure the basket and then cut two identical pieces of fabric and two narrow pieces for the pockets. Sew them together (the pockets as well). Next attach a thick piece of thread vertically to create two pocket compartments. Then, using the buttons, sew a band to the top of the fabric. Put the resulting product on the basket and use buttons and loops to keep the fabric in place. You now have a nice storage basket for all your tools.

3. DIY Flower tray.

Here you'll need 2 or 3 wicker baskets or flower pots, a wooden board around 40 x 60 cm, 4 casters, artificial grass, a drill, screwdriver, and a staple gun. First take the wooden board and sand it if needed. Put the wheels in the corners of the board and mark the places where the screws will go. Drill the holes and attach the wheels. Take the artificial grass and attach it using the staple gun. Place the plants in the baskets and put them in the tray you've made.{found on design-remount}.

7 Ideas For Using Chandeliers In The House

Posted: 16 Aug 2012 01:34 AM PDT

Chandeliers are anything but boring. They demand attention to any space and add a whole lot of style to even the more unsuspecting places of the house. Just be sure when choosing a chandelier you realize that your choosing for decorative purposes and not functionality. So, if you need something with great lighting, steer clear of the chandelier! But, if you need something to spruce things up and create a focus to any corner or crevice … add some sparkle and shine with these beautiful light fixtures! First, take some of these ideas and decide what you’d like to try out for some special part of your home.

1. Over the bathroom tub.

It’s unsuspecting, whimsical and romantic … and definitely dramatic. Hanging a chandelier over a lazy tub will surely make those relaxing bubble baths that much more relaxing and a whole lot more stylish. The dimmer lights and sparkle are perfect for private spaces like these.

2. Over the kitchen island.

Use some cute mini chandelier to perk up the kitchen! Placing them above the island just gives more light for prepping dinner and decorating cookies … not to mention adds to your kitchen’s personality and theme.

3. Over the bed.

Another place for a chandelier to add some romance … over the bed! Instead of using a dramatic headboard, do something more subtle and add a beautiful chandelier in the mix.

4. Over the side tables.

We’ve already established that using a chandelier over the bed in a bedroom was a great idea for aesthetic reasons, but you don’t necessarily have to hang it over the bed to get the same effect. You could also mix things up and hang them in a more unsuspected place like over the side tables or just somewhere in the corner!

5. Over the dining room table.

Let’s be honest, the dining room is an obvious option as to where to hang a chandelier. But, if you decide to use a chandelier that’s a little outside the box you’ll create something different than the usual, dramatic and conservative ethos a typical chandelier may add.

6. Over the baby’s nursery.

To add a little vintage appeal add a chandelier to your baby’s nursery! It’s sophisticate but the dimming lights will definitely add a little relaxation to the room.

7. Over the hallway.

Make your walk from room to room a bit more interesting. Hang a chandelier or two above your path to light the way in a fashion-forward style.

Now take a look (and drool) over these beautiful places, spaces and chandelier locations. Grab some inspiration and start your search for the perfect nook (or cranny) for your new chandelier!

Renovated summer residence in Tuscany

Posted: 15 Aug 2012 11:19 PM PDT

Located in Marina di Castagneto Carducci, Tuscany, Italy, this residence is surrounded by beautiful trees and wonderful landscape. In this region, the buildings are surrounded by dunes with pines, oaks and myrtles and they are connected by paths that follow the landscape. The idea was to avoid artificial transformation of the land and to preserve its natural beauty.

This residence is a summer house and it was originally built in the mid-60s. It 2008 it was renovated by Massimo Fiorido Associati+ sundaymorning. It was in pretty bad shape and this gave the architects the opportunity to rethink the whole project. The idea was to create a strong connection with the nature and to allow it to blend in by using a palette of natural colors found in that region. The architects also had to redefine and restructure the internal space. They created a sequence of rooms closely connected to each other that also provide a close connection to the surrounding landscape.

The dining room features a succession of openings of the same size that provide panoramic views of the dune landscape. The rest of the rooms feature a similar design. When reorganizing and renovating the residence, the team had to conduct a series of interventions. This changed the shape of the residence and also had a strong impact on the exterior. The changes were designed to highlight some elements such as the double-pitched roof and the exterior design. The materials used to renovate the exterior were meant to allow it to blend in with the surrounding landscape.

A pair of townhouses in Los Angeles

Posted: 15 Aug 2012 10:11 PM PDT

I didn't know exactly what to expect when I've heard about these two "Green Houses", but know that I've seen them I know exactly what they are. I'll scrap my first idea of plants growing all over and glass roofs but I will keep the structure in mind.As you can see these two are very much alike but not identical. Each one features huge glass openings in the walls and double height living rooms and a three floor layout.

Both "towers" were built with the latest preoccupations in energy consumption, environmental impact, recycling and so on by Sander Architects That is why these two have massive steel beams, framing the house and structure, passive heating and cooling systems, natural lighting and so on. They didn't stop here and went further with the idea of diminishing the energy consumption using very high-performance glazing, shade screens to let fewer light in the key moments of the day reducing so the amount of heat inside the house.

Also a natural air flow helps with the energy transfer either we talk about cold or hot air. The kitchen cabinetry was made entirely from FSC-certified wood and the countertops are also made of recycled glass. Along with low-flush toilets and low VOC paint these houses set very high standards in the business and I will be challenging for others to keep up. I love how everything turned out, but I'm a little more conservative and I care a lot about my privacy. These two buildings are more "transparent" encouraging fewer boundaries and I'm not sure but I think a lot of people will agree with me on this one. What do you think?{found on archdaily and pics by Sharon Risedorph}.

5 tips for a perfectly made bed

Posted: 15 Aug 2012 08:49 PM PDT

The bed is the most important and most prominent piece of furniture from the bedroom. So its image basically reflects the whole room. It's why it's important to have a nicely made bed. It might seem like a too difficult task, especially since you have to perform it every morning. But if you have a ritual and a few easy steps it will become a piece of cake and you won't even notice it anymore. We're just give you a few tips to help you determine that.

1. The bed linens.

It all starts with the bed linens. When buying, you have to know what to look for. Everything has to fit your bed perfectly and to be easy to use. A mattress pad with elastic edging can really save you some time and patience. You should also have a quilt, comforter or duvet and a blanket. The type depends on your preferences as well as the climate.{picture from Centsationalgirl}.

2. The fitted sheet.

This is the part that can be really annoying. The fitted sheet needs to fit perfectly, as its name suggests. Having one that is either too short or too long can be very frustrating. If you have a tall mattress then an extra-deep sheet should work nicely. Remember to pull and tuck the edges beneath the mattress. If you do it right it could take days before you have to repeat the process.

3. The blanket.

The blanket should also have the optimal size. However, sometimes finding the perfect one tends to be impossible. So if you have a blanket that is slightly shorter than the sheet as it often happens, it would be best to pull it down from the top of the mattress rather than to expose the bottom. This is an esthetical detail but it's also something that would allow you to be more comfortable.

4. The flat sheet.

Here's a tip that can help you create smooth edges and corners for your flat sheet and blanket. The idea is to hold the long edges of the sheet and the blanket away from the bed and to pull them atop the mattress. You should form a 45-degree angle at the corner. Then lift the foot of the mattress and slide the draping bottom edges of the bed linens beneath it. This way you can avoid the creases and it's also a time-efficient process.{found on site}.

5. The pillows.

A lot of people tend to obsess over pillows. They just keep gathering them until the fill the whole bed with pillows of all shapes and sizes. This will only make bedtime more frustrating. If you want to keep things simple, the pillows you sleep on and maybe some throw pillows should be enough. Prop them against the headboard and that's all.

The Bookshop from the Gothic Church

Posted: 15 Aug 2012 07:38 PM PDT

I would spend my entire day in a bookshop. The smell of fresh printed books and the fact that you are surrounded by the thoughts of famous people makes you feel like you’re in Heaven. For me, at least, a bookshop is a piece of Heaven. Imagine if this piece of Heaven is in a former 13th Century Gothic Church. Is the perfect place for me. Designed by the architects of Merks + Girod Architecture studio from Amsterdam, this bookshop was made in the town of Maastricht, Nederlands.

So, the best description for this place is that it is an amazing combination between history and contemporarily, and according to the architects: "Selexyz Dominicanen is a project with multiple souls, where tradition and innovative solutions come together over a good book and a good cup of coffee." Is a very good description for a very nice place. But the best thing is that you can see the difference between old and new, because on a part of the building you can clearly observe the old columns of the church and on the other part there are a lot of modern bookshelves. They well contrasted this aspect.

Taking advantage of the magnificent architecture of the church, but not having to many space, the designers had to insert an over-sized walk-in bookcase. That brought plenty of space for exposing books from all over the world. This impressing bookcase was created by Keijsers Interior Projects, and found his place in the right part of the building.

With thematic islands and a café area with a table in shape of a crucifix, you will sure find your peace reading a good book and enjoying the pleasant atmosphere. And you will find all the books you want, because the shop has showcases 25,000 books and 45,000 volumes. And with 700,000 visitors each year this contemporary Dutch building, was awarded the Lensvelt de Architect prize in 2007. So, if you`re going to Maastricht, buy a book from here.
