Modern Amsterdam Armoire

Posted: 15 Jun 2012 05:47 AM PDT

Back in the 17th century the French invented and used the “armoire”, which is a sort of cabinet where you can store different things that are more or less valuable for you. This piece of furniture has been very popular ever since and the name stuck. This Modern Amsterdam Armoire is the modern version of that popular piece of furniture and it combines in a fortunate manner the usefulness of such a thing and its modern and cool design. This armoire is designed by the designers from Scholten & Baijings and it is based on ther Dutch design of furniture. These guys turned the traditional and painted wooden armooire into a beautiful and modern centerpiece of your bedroom or living room.

First of all it is made of modern materials like fiber board, printed laminate, steel and hand blown glass. However, the essential features were kept, as this armoire, too, has the interior featuring printed pattern and still life pictures on each doorpainted instead of having them painted by hand on the outside like its ancestor did. The hand painted still life was replaced with artistic photos made by the photographers Maurice Scheltens & Liesbeth Abbenes. Two legs are made of hand blown glass and look really cool in the pink hue you can admire in the pictures. This Amsterdam Armoire has four doors and a drawer and can make any room look modern for $13,600.

Chic Urban Apartments

Posted: 15 Jun 2012 05:38 AM PDT

Chic, urban apartments are definitely perfect for someone who is energetic and full of life. These apartments are ideal because they are often just steps away from amenities like fine restaurants and even parks and other recreational activities. Yet, these apartments, once inside, are just as homey and comfortable as any apartment you would find in the suburbs. Often, they have superior views, cool features like exposed bricks and beams, and an industrial feel.

The apartments featured below all have something special, a particular touch that makes them worthy of a magazine. Some have expertly chosen furniture while others have ceiling height that would rival even the tallest cathedrals. Either way, you won't be disappointed by the incredible roundup of urban apartments shown here.

This chic downtown loft in San Diego has amazing city views and large floor to ceiling windows that let in tons of light. The long curtains help to define the ceiling height, and well-chosen contemporary accessories complete the look.{picture found here}.

I can't get enough of this incredible industrial urban home. The exposed steel beams, ductwork, and bricks give it a historic charm. The stairs are open and airy, making the whole room feel large and expansive, even though this room does not have a large square footage.{found on site}.

The vintage yet contemporary vibe in this urban Houston apartment gives it a cozy and comfortable feel. An old couch contrasts with a highly modern chair. Industrial barstools look pristine set against the old wood floors and exposed brick. Rows and rows of books make it the ideal place to sit and read.

Everyone knows that an outdoor space is the ultimate luxury when looking for an urban apartment. This incredible patio and deck has comfortable and durable seating, a place for many friends to gather, and incredible downtown views.{found on site}.

Urban/contemporary apartments often have some of the best art collections. This gallery wall is so simple and would be easy to DIY. The small frames make art more affordable and create wonderful conversation pieces. This hallway also draws your eye to the expansive urban view.{found here}.

One way to make a smaller urban apartment feel bigger is to have your furniture appear to be floating. The couch is lifted off of the floor as is the console underneath the TV. Recessed lights help bolster the natural light that undoubtedly fills the apartment throughout the day.

If you are in the market for a new home, consider urban living. As these apartments show, there are so many ways to achieve a comfortable and lived in look even in the most pristine contemporary apartments. Plus, you can't beat living close to so many unique amenities that cities have to offer.

If you prefer having outdoor spaces and places to garden, don't assume that every urban apartment is just steel beams and glass. Many places have patio areas and in the case of urban townhomes, backyards where pets and kids can play.

So, good luck, and happy hunting!

Beautiful garden sofa

Posted: 15 Jun 2012 04:12 AM PDT

Outdoor furniture, the same as indoor furniture, comes in a large variety of designs. Wicker furniture is very popular because it has that casual look while also being lightweight and comfortable. Outdoor furniture is usually used on decks terraces but also in gardens where the atmosphere is very relaxed and where you can spend quality time admiring the landscape and enjoying the privacy.

Too Deep is a particularly lovely garden sofa. It's a part of the Too Deep Line and it's offered by Corradi. The same collection also includes pieces such as the garden daybed, the extending polycarbonate garden table, the garden pouf or the stackable aluminum garden chairs. This garden sofa has a very simple and appealing look. It's a 2-seater garden sofa designed for outdoor use and it's both practical and stylish.

The sofa has a contemporary design with simple lines and just a hint of vintage, mostly because of the materials. It's been crafted from a soft blend of materials meant to offer a high level of comfort. The Too Deep garden sofa is also a very versatile piece that can basically be used anywhere. It has a simple and friendly shape and a strong and durable wooden base. The body of the sofa is crafted from a combination of aluminum and micor. The Too Deep garden sofa beautifully matches the other piece from the collection and they can all be used separately or as a set.

Minimalist Japanese House In Close Connection With Nature

Posted: 15 Jun 2012 03:19 AM PDT

Living in close connection with nature has always been someone people enjoy. However, these days it's difficult to do that because of practical reasons. It's also difficult to find a good spot for a house when everyone else is looking for the same thing. As a result, we are forced to improvise. The owners of this residence have found a very interesting and daring solution. They managed to integrate nature inside their home as opposed to search for a way to take the house in the middle of nature.

The Kofunaki House is located in Shiga, Japan and occupies an area of 132.31 square meters. It was a project by ALTS Design Office and it was completed in 2012. The house is very bright and it's just because indoor plants need light to live. It's also a personal option of the owners. They wanted a very airy home with a design that would make them feel in close connection with nature even though the outside reality doesn't allow that. As a result, they incorporated lots of outdoor features right there inside their home.

The house features lots of plants inside and recreates a natural environment. The indoor-outdoor connection is very strong but not because the house has large glass windows like in most cases. It's because the interior is very similar to the outdoor environment. Throughout the house, the walls and ceilings are completely white. The rest of the features are made of wood with a natural look.

The owners also integrated many plants inside but not in pots or planters as it usually happens. They planted them in actual ground. The floor has decoupages all over the house with natural habitats inside them. It's a very interesting concept and the results are very inspiring. Not only that the atmosphere is very light and airy but with a home like this you rarely feel the need to go away.

3 simple DIY projects for the kitchen

Posted: 15 Jun 2012 12:00 AM PDT

There are moments when you feel like you want to improve your home, to make it more efficient and practical. Most of the things that you can improve are in the kitchen. It's a space that can't really be too functional or practical. And since each kitchen differs according to the one using it, you can't always find the items that you need in stores. Then you have to make them yourself, which is a very practical idea. Here are three DIY projects specifically designed for the kitchen.

1. Storing jar for tea bags.

Everybody has tea bags in their home. Even if you don't drink tea you still have some for your guests. They usually have different flavors and they need to be stored separately. If you just keep the box they come in you will need a lot of space for them. But if you make a practical storing container you can save space and also have a beautiful DIY item. For this project you'll need a round tin container such as the ones for cookies, some blue acrylic paint, varnish, spray adhesive, some wallpaper, cardboard, a ruler, scissors, a pencil and a brush.

Wash the jar and apply several coats of paint. Measure its interior and cut three strips of cardboard. Wrap them in wallpaper using glue and insert them inside the jar, creating small partitions. You'll have to make small incisions first. Now you have several compartment for your different flavors of tea.

2. Round support for hot objects.

You can't just take a hot pan and place it on the table because it will damage the surface. You need a support for that. You can make one from wine corks. You just need 30-40 wine corks, silicone, a sharp knife, pencil, ruler and a long belt-buckle flange. First find the shortest cork and cut the rest of them to those dimensions. Apply silicone to the sides and attach them together until you form a circle. At the end, wrap them with a belt-flange and cut off the excess.

3. Chalkboard kitchen display.

A chalkboard display is very useful in the kitchen. You can write all sorts of things on it, such as items you need to buy and similar stuff. To make one you'll need a frame from a picture or mirror, a piece of plywood, two small steel shelves, a loop/ hook, screws, nails, a brush, a screwdriver and tape measure. Measure the frame and cut the plywood to those dimensions. Cover it with several layers of paint and attach it to the back of the frame using nails. Hang it on the wall with loops or hooks and attach the bottom shelves to the wall using screws. Now you have a small board to white on and two shelves for displaying anything you want.

The City in the Sky Concept by Hrama

Posted: 14 Jun 2012 10:00 PM PDT

Imagine a futuristic world with gardens rising above the pollution and the traffic, placed on enormous towers in the shape of the lotus flower. It's a very interesting concept proposed by Hrama . The idea was inspired by biomimicry and takes the image of a stratospheric urban park that would rise above cities like London and New York.

This futuristic concept includes large glass and steel structures with reflecting ponds and lawns on top of them. The trees and lush gardens will sit safe above the city, far away from all the pollution and chaos below them. These structures would be higher than the Empire State Building and the World Trade Center and they would have cherry trees that would blossom all year around with pond lilies and beautiful vegetation. The residents of these utopic structures would be protected by glass walls that would act as a shield against the wind and precipitations and they would also be able to admire the city from above.

These impressive towers would be shaped like lotus flowers and they will have a diaphane look. They would offer breathtaking views of the cities below them, in addition to magnificent environments right there, on top of them. It's a very interesting vision, very futuristic and visionary and it would be nice to live to see it become reality.
