Fun and functional teen workstation makeover Posted: 14 Jun 2012 10:27 AM PDT The distance from child to teen is huge. Everything changes, including your preferences and needs in terms of interior design. For example, what used to be a tiny table for doing homework needs to be turned into a more complex workstation with storage facilities and more space. It's exactly the change that this particular piece of furniture went through. This is Cayley's room. She was about to start high school in the fall when her parents decided that her room needed a makeover. They were particularly interested in changing the workstation and transforming it into a larger unit with plenty of storage space. They wanted to make this bedroom both cozy and functional. The study area was a priority. They chose a colorful, contemporary look for this space.
The bedroom now features a large wall unit covering an entire wall. It incorporates all the little elements that used to be in that area of the room but in an organized and simple manner. The wall unit creates a more stylish decor while also providing Cayley with a functional space for her homework and school projects. She has plenty of storage space inside the boxes and drawers and the room kept its intimate and fun appeal. Of course, introducing this large piece of furniture into the room meant that the whole space needed to be reorganized. Cayley's room is now modern, organized, stylish and, most important of all, very functional.{found on ikeahackers}. 5 Alternative Ways To Use Magazine Racks Posted: 14 Jun 2012 07:30 AM PDT Magazine racks are used for just that: magazines! But in reality, they can be used for so much more, especially since people rarely ever store their magazines nowadays anyways … it’s all about recycling. And that’s what we can do with our old (or new) magazine racks, recycle them and turn them into something new. So instead of buying one and never using it for your old issues of Time or Cosmo, snag a magazine rack for something else! Check out these 5 alternative ways to use these little pieces and you’ll be surprised by how many household items can be neatly stores in mere minutes! 1.Clean up your pantry and use up your can food! It seems as though we are constantly collecting more and more canned foods, doesn’t it? It’s like we have a never-ending supplied of canned corn and soups. And the older ones never get eaten! Well, by using a magazine rack you not only use up all your food, but you also clean up your pantry from clutter as well. Let’s be honest, how many times have you gone in the cupboard and had cans fall and roll around at your feet? Ouch! With this ideas, it won’t happen ever again!
2. Keep your fruit fresh! Don’t store your fruit in the fridge and forget to eat it. Instead, grab some cute magazine racks, or ones that have gone unused in your home, slap them up on the wall and you’ve got fruit basket! The kids can pick up an apple on the way out the door to school and you’ve got a quick to-go snack as well. Remember, when food is in sight, it’ll be eaten! 3. Straighten up the craft room and store your fabrics! This is such a great idea for all those crafty people out there! Fold up all your excess fabric and store them in the racks. They’ll be easier to find and won’t create a pile of mess in the corner either. 4. Keep your towels fresh and tidy. If you have limited space or just want something that looks a bit more contemporary, find some magazine racks and store your clean towels in the bathroom. Again, it’s organized and takes away any clutter that towels can create on a counter top. 5. Display or dry your plates! Villa transformed into an indoor skate park Posted: 14 Jun 2012 05:39 AM PDT When you have a strong passion for something you should pursue that path and make it a part of your life. For example, if you like skateboarding, you should take some inspiration from this house. This is the Skate Villa. It's located in Salzburg, Austria and it was a project by Philipp Schuster. The professional skateboarder managed to turn an apparently ordinary space into a themed home. He transformed it into an indoor skate park. The idea is definitely unusual but this is what makes it so special and unique. The Skate Villa features concrete mounds and ramps placed against the wall and these are all details meant to allow the user to basically skate around the house. It's a way of doing what you like best without feeling restricted by anything, not even by your home. All Philipp Schuster needed to create his own piece of heaven was a few tons of concrete and some inside knowledge.
Inside, you can see ramps and concrete mounds everywhere, against the walls, underneath the windows and around the fireplace. Of course, such a special home couldn't be complete without a proper interior décor. The ramps are just the starting point. Everything else has to match the theme. For that to happen, the owner decided to redecorate the whole house. He then filled it with vintage furniture, antiques and hunting trophies. They all look beautiful and they reflect the owner's passions and preferences.{found on dezeen}. Interior Designer Max Gough Apartment Posted: 14 Jun 2012 03:07 AM PDT This colorful apartment is located in West Hollywood, Los Angeles and it belongs to interior designer Max Gough. He shares this space with his cat, Bruno. It's a 700 square feet bungalow-style apartment that the two have been calling home for 7 years. The apartment is very beautifully decorated. It features an eclectic style and a décor very rich in color. The textures are dark throughout the apartment and they are complemented by strong and dynamic colors. The walls are filled with beautiful artwork and the whole place is decorated with personalized accessories, a large collection of books and other beautiful details. The apartment is quite small so Max has decided to opt for a charming and cozy décor. The most important elements for him when designing a space are color and pattern and we can see here that he paid special attention to those elements.
The apartment hasn't always looked like this. For the first five years that Max and his cat lived here it used to look completely different. It was simpler and less personalized but all that changed. It's now a very eye-catching space with colors bursting all over the place and with great texture and lots of different influences. It's like the owner managed to gather there everything he likes and created a charming composition. Of course, there were challenges to this project. The budget was tight and collecting all those unique pieces took some time but everything eventually resulted in this beautiful place called home.{found on apartmenttherapy}. Posted: 14 Jun 2012 01:11 AM PDT If you want to add some texture to your home, maybe you should look at the big picture instead of focusing on the small details. For example, you could start big, with a whole wall. A concrete wall would be a very interesting element that would definitely change the look and atmosphere of your home. At first, you might find this project a little scary and maybe complicated. In reality it's a quite simple thing to do. To learn more about this project we're going to show you an example. This is a concrete wall created by Kara Paslay. She thought her home has started to look boring and she wanted to make a change. She opted for a concrete wall as a big accent piece. It's an element that can't really be placed in a particular category. It's an eclectic element, with contemporary, rustic and traditional touches. To make this wall, Kara used a product called Ardex SD-M.
She started by mixing the content of the bag (about 1/3) with water. It should have a pancake batter consistency. Then she used a drywall knife to spread the paste on the wall. It didn't look very pretty at first but she likes the inconsistency of the texture. If you prefer a smoother look you can sand the marks out. The first coat needs to be completely dry before applying a second one. Let that one dry as well as you're done. It's simpler than it looks. The Peaceful Home in Scotland Island Posted: 14 Jun 2012 12:37 AM PDT Although we live some difficult moments, dominated by all sorts of natural calamities, financial crises and different sudden changes, the idea is to remain calm and adapt the new situations, trying not to complicate more the things. Sometimes, simplicity, wise way of thinking and patience may be the answer to all our obstacles and the key to a more peaceful life. The following presentation refers to place that takes to a peaceful environment, a beautiful oasis of pure nature, simplicity and relaxation. The savage, abrupt rocky surroundings seemed to have captured this building which fitted very nice here. The dark wood elements dominate the whole building and some of them are contrasted by the white walls which appear in some areas. Each room of this house offer great views like the kitchen or dining areas. It looks like a great vacation house where the rooms are connected by decks and stairs which seem to reflect the abrupt land where it is situated this house.
There are some items which take you with the mind to some oriental places, like the minimalist bedroom with its blue decorated cushions and white and blue bedding. The kids' area seems to take to an adventure to the African savanna due to its huge giraffes, zebra and colored insects that decorate a white wall. Even the carpet and pouf used for the office room connects you to some oriental places. Still, there is a rustic touch kept for the outdoor terrace which invites you to a delicious dinner, sitting at its wood table and bench or on the stone support. It seems a place which is untouched by the complicated problems of the daily routine or the difficult period we live.Property listed on site. A Renovated Apartment in Tel Aviv Posted: 13 Jun 2012 11:12 PM PDT There are moments when we become unsatisfied with the place where we live in. The reasons may be related to space incommodity, the boring and out of fashion style used or just the need of a change. The idea is to create a place of our own where we feel fine, relaxed, comfortable and which will always inspire us warm and happiness. In Tel Aviv, Sfaro Architects renovated an apartment which covers a surface of 59 square meters, situated in a building of apartments. This architectural studio, Sfaro tried to bring this apartment to life again and gain more practical and useful space. Thus the yellow nuances were replaced by white and nuances of dark and light blue and many useless corridors and closets were removed. Two original support columns were kept and the central wall structure became a useful space for different types of storage.
The intention of this renovation was to get a warmer, fresher and more spacious living place, where the owners could use every centimeter of this space at maximum and enjoy the new atmosphere and airy place. The white kitchen, the warm brought by the light wood nuance of the pieces of furniture or the freshness of the blue nuances make the whole apartment become more welcoming and brighter. Everything looks more optimistic and full of life. Although there are only 59 square meters, the new arrangement and the new areas gained let you the impression that you live in a larger apartment where nothing seems to miss or make you feel uncomfortable.{found on freshome}. Eco-friendy mountain contemporary home in Colorado Posted: 13 Jun 2012 08:49 PM PDT Located in the Elkins Meadow subdivision, two miles from downtown Steamboat Springs, Colorado, USA, the Reed Residence is a very interesting addition to the landscape. At first it might seem like a very old house with aged exterior and a rather traditional look. However, in reality, the Reed residence is a contemporary building with a lovely design, both inside and out. Another interesting thing about this house is that it's not surprising but it also has an eco-friendly design. The Reed Residence was a project by Colorado-based studio Robert Hawkins Architects. They created this beautiful mountain house using natural and traditional materials. The exterior is completely covered in wood. This creates a continuous and uniform look and also helps the house easily integrate into the landscape. The wood creates a warm and cozy atmosphere and this is also one of the reasons why it was also extensively used for the interior.
The interior design of the Reed Residence is simple, casual and modern. The fact that almost everything is made of wood is a little surprising but overall it's a very nice choice of materials. The exposed beams from the ceilings are a beautiful detail and make the house seem very inviting, casual and relaxing. The color palette is neutral and based on tones of brown. The house has multiple levels and an asymmetrical design. A beautiful detail is represented by the roof gardens covered with low-maintenance native plants.
