Stylish before and after full home renovation Posted: 13 Jun 2012 10:57 AM PDT We rarely decide to renovate our entire home. We usually do it in steps so that we can still use the other areas while the kitchen or bedroom is being renovated. However, if you want to create continuous design it's best to do it all at the same time. A great example for that is this particular home. It took the owners 5 months to complete the whole project and they spent $75K for the entire home. Among the most visible changes we could mention the exposed brick wall from the first floor that was previously hidden, the open dining and living area, the open metal staircase and the hardwood flooring. Now the house has an overall industrial look with rough modern touches such as the industrial-style lighting fixtures or the salvaged furniture pieces. The owner wanted a décor that would combine several styles, including vintage, industrial and modern. They really wanted an exposed brick wall and they got one along with a beautiful fireplace and chimney.
The fireplace from the bedroom gives it a vintage/rustic look. To create a more industrial look, the owners opted for floating stairs with steel stringers, cedar posts and aircraft wire. To also add something modern, they decided to have a contemporary kitchen. There you can see a farmer's sink with an industrial pendant lights above the breakfast bar. To create a sense of continuity they used hardwood flooring throughout the house.{found on designsponge}. White interior design office in Seoul Posted: 13 Jun 2012 09:50 AM PDT If you have the possibility to make something yourself it's better not to let someone else take charge. Nobody knows better what you need than you. It's the same idea adopted by Khan Project when they designed their own office. The Korean architecture studio created a laboratory-like space. It's an unusual concept but the architects wanted something different and unique. In this office the staff wears doctors' gowns and walk barefoot. The office is located in Seoul and it's a very interesting space even without the employees walking around. Inside, the space was functionally organized into working areas, meeting rooms and both private and public spaces. The working areas feature wooden desktops and chairs. Except for those elements, the rest of the décor is completely white. The walls are white, the ceilings are white, the floor is white and even the furniture is white.
The result is a very pure and minimalist décor. The office also features fluorescent tubes that create bright white stripes across the ceiling. Even the documents and the items from the bookshelves are stored in white folders and storage containers. The fact that the staff dresses as doctors is just another element that responds to the company's philosophy: "to fix space like doctors cure people". This office is a space where employees can detach from the outside world and from everything that distracts them and just concentrate on their work. White is a color that was chosen because of its neutrality and pureness. It's a color that doesn't transmit anything but rather instigates to creativity.{found on dezeen}. A 1920s Renovated Home With Turquoise Accents by Garry Mertins Posted: 13 Jun 2012 08:15 AM PDT People are sensitive, carrying and melancholic. They become very attached to different things, especially those which have marked their existence. There are certain people who love to keep many things that belonged to a certain period of their life as much as possible or people who hardly can give up some things which belonged to some dear persons. Others love to keep the ambiance of certain times which brought them many satisfactions and a wealthy living. The owners of this 1920s renovated home are somehow melancholic about the old times but they love the beach and the freshness brought by the contemporary times. They asked the interior designer, Garry Mertins to renovate their home so that they can still enjoy the beauty of those old times but feel nice and comfortable due to the contemporary elements. They also love wood and the woodworks so that the massive wood pieces are present all over the place and the original woodworks were kept.
In the kitchen there are some vintage white cabinets but also modern light fixtures, a massive wood island completed by the presence of a solid wood diner table and some dark blue chairs. The classic décor is created by the existence of some brown huge vases and a big painting on the wall. A 1920s old home means the use of massive dark wood elements and thus the atmosphere needed to become a little bit lighter. Thus the dark wood pieces are contrasted by white and turquoise nuances which bring a lot of freshness and express the owners' love towards beach. The kitchen and dining areas became one single space so that everything looked more airy and spacious. In the living room there are some vintage bookcases and light fixtures but also some modern armchairs and a modern wood coffee table. The interior wood stairs complete the classic décor together with the framed pictures that are on the wall. Everything is a mixture of old and new, creating a peaceful and lovely living place.{found on athomearkansas}. Haute Color Combo: Yellow & Black Posted: 13 Jun 2012 06:44 AM PDT "Fly like a butterfly. Sting like a bee." I always think of those lyrics when I see a black and yellow color scheme in a home. It reminds me of a bumblebee, but a very chic and sophisticated bumblebee at that. Black goes well with any color, but it looks especially great with yellow. Add in some incredible accessories, gorgeous art, and cool headboards, and you have a winning space. Just check out the inspiration pictures below to see what I mean. My favorite part of this room is the awesome lamps. Thick bright yellow lamp bases are the only time that color makes an appearance in the room, but it's the perfect touch. The large drum shades are contemporary and help set the tone of the room. Chic bed linens make this space feel like a hotel, and need I even mention how gorgeous that metallic wallpaper is?
This is another great room where yellow is the accent color. Gorgeous pillows adorn cozy chairs that make for a beautiful sitting space. A great mix of patterns and pillows make this room especially stylish. I love how this room utilizes many different types of black and white patterns throughout. The curtains are a completely different pattern from the chic wall paper. A dark black headboard grounds the space, and bright yellow lamps inject personality into the room.{found on site}. The unique flowered panels on the wall make for an interesting contrast with the zebra bench. Well thought out accessories cover the bookshelves. Even the books are wrapped in yellow or white paper for an incredibly seamless look. Of course, every room also needs a prominent piece of furniture, so this great retro yellow chair completely makes the space. A single faux orchid also ties in the colors. This awesome home office is beyond enviable. First, I love that these homeowners took the plunge and painted an entire room black. It makes for such a dramatic look and doesn't even appear dark due to the bright windows and white pieces of furniture. Floor to ceiling yellow curtains help to tie in the color and one very cool desk chair completes the look.{found on site}. I just love these yellow chairs because of the black piping. It's so sleek and sophisticated and would look great in a variety of room styles. Also, the attention to detail in this room is superb. For example, check out the great Greek key pattern and the incredible art on the wall for the perfect finishing touches. I hope these stunning rooms have inspired you to put a little bit of yellow and black into your home. Whether you bring in a few fresh flowers or purchase new furniture, injecting these colors into your home can immediately add sophistication. Also, don't be afraid to go extra bold, like painting a wall black or buying a completely unique piece of furniture. You won't be disappointed, because with these colors, more is more. 4 creative DIY projects for your home office Posted: 13 Jun 2012 04:40 AM PDT For most of us, a home office is a must have. We all tend to bring our work home and some of us even work from home. But when you realize you need to decorate this area, things tend to get complicated. Since it's a part of your home, you want it to feel personal. Still, you also want it to be suitable for work. A great way of achieving that perfect balance is by making your own furniture and decorations.Maybe some pieces are too difficult to make by yourself, such as the desk and chair. But the rest is relatively easy to create if you have time and creativity. Here are four such projects that are both simple and very practical. 1. Storage unit with wooden boxes. We all have all sorts of items that need to be stored somewhere. In the office we have all sorts of tools and supplies that need to be put somewhere safe where we can easily find them when we need them.
This unit does that. To make it you'll need3 wooden boxes that you can also make by yourself, 4 wooden slats about 1 meter long, wood screws, a screwdriver, tape measure and a pencil. If you already have the boxes, mark the place where you want the rails to go ad attach them with screws. If you plan to store heavy items in them it would be better to glue the boxes to the rails before inserting the screws. It's a very easy project and it can also be useful in other spaces such as the kitchen. 2. Paper holder made from plastic bottles. If you usually like to read the paper in your home office then you also need a place to store it after that. This paper holder will take care of that for you. To make this item you need a wooden board, 3 caps of tin cans, screws, scissors, a long screwdriver, pins, tape measure, a wooden cutting board and an awl. First you'll need to cut off the top of the bottles. To avoid deforming them you should use a cutting board. Then make a hole in the center of each lid using an awl or hand drill. Place the lid inside the bottle and screw them to the wooden board. To make the bottles more appealing you can attach ribbons to the edges. Hang the wooden board on the wall and your project is done. 3. Hanging board from old jeans. When you work with small tools and accessories, it's easier if you have a place to store them but where you can also easily find them and use them. This hanging board is very useful in such cases. To make a similar one you need a rigid board, some denim segments, old jeans, a sewing machine and a stapler. Cut the fabric to the dimensions of the board and then cut off the jeans pockets and belt loops. These will be attached to the board. Sew them using the sewing machine and then secure everything with staples or glue. Add some stud hangers and you're done. 4. Personalized display frame. Having all your tools and accessories nearby is important but your home office also needs some personalized decorations. A photo frame is a simple element to make. You just need a large frame from another project or one made by yourself, wire or thick plastic mesh, furniture stapler, tape measure and pliers or scissors. Measure the frame and then cut the mesh. Attach it to the back of the frame with staples and attach the hangers. Now you can display photos or small items using clothespins. Abandoned house in Brooklyn beautifully renovated with a small budget Posted: 13 Jun 2012 03:53 AM PDT Not a lot of people would dare to even try to transform a basically abandoned house into a stylish home. However, not everyone is Jeff Sherman, architect for Sherman Architects. He is not a typical home renovator and he proved that with this project. He decided to start this project in 2000. He had a very finite budget and a wrecked house in Brooklyn that he wanted to turn into a beautiful private home. It took the architect ten years to complete the project. But that's because he worked as his own contractor and builder. After all that time, the house is unrecognizable. What used to be a scary abandoned space is now a beautiful and inviting house. The architect managed to do all that for a price of about $100 per square foot. The house features a bright and airy dining room with a skylight in the center. The rest of the house shares a similar décor.
The architect was drawn by this place because he thought it had great potential. It was a raw house but it was not completely bad. It still had a nice structure and a beautiful backyard. Immediately after buying the property the architect started demolition. He then restructured the shell of the house, after which he started camping inside. He preserved everything that was still usable and didn't need to be replaced. At one point he got some help and hired people to help him finish the renovation. It took ten years to finish this project but it's finally done and ready to serve as a cozy new home.{foundon dwell}. Eye catching turquoise table lamp Posted: 13 Jun 2012 03:00 AM PDT We like new things and we like changing the old ones in our homes with brand new items. Well, this works very well for appliances but when it comes to accessories, it would be a good idea to purchase some old things, I mean beautiful antiques that will give a special look to your house. For example this Eye catching turquoise table lamp is amazing and it is important mostly for its look. The fact that it works still very well is a bonus. Any way, this table lamp is turquoise and you can use its colour to make some beautiful colour arrangements and combine it with another turquoise accessory and some white or black furniture around and the visual impact will be great.
This lamp was made in Italy in the 1960s and is made of Venetian Murano glass, which is amazing once you get to know the quality of this hand blown glass. It is pretty large in size and still has its original lamp shade and also has a shiny and nice brass base. It is in excellent condition and is provided by 1stdibs at Ellen Ward Scarborough Antiques. It comes with a cord that you need to attach to a plug to make the lamp work. You either love it or you hate it at first sight, but you can’t ignore it. World’s first cloned village is now open to visitors Posted: 13 Jun 2012 12:46 AM PDT When you think of China and its inhabitants you never know what to expect next. They always come up with unusual and surprising things. One of the most impressive creations is the world's first cloned village. Indeed, the Chinese copied an entire village. It's Hallstatt village, a UNESCO protected heritage gem in Austria and its exact replica can now be seen outside of Huizhou in Guangdong Province. China Minmetals Corporation first announced their intention to begin this massive project in June, 2011. Only one year later the village is open to visitors. It was a $940 million plan and they managed to create something that no other country would ever dream of doing. The cloned village is only accessible by boat and treacherous alpine trails. The idea of cloning an entire village in a place where it doesn't belong to is not something that everyone agrees with.
And the original. Even though some people think that this whole project was not an appropriate idea, the reality is that the cloned village is a unique place in the world, despite the fact that it's an exact replica of something that originally existed somewhere else. Of course, you can copy the buildings and everything else but you can't really copy the culture, the traditions and the atmosphere. This is still a subject to de debated but the tourists seem to be very curious about this place and very interested to see it with their own eyes and maybe compare it to the original.{found on decoist and pictures from fanpop, hallstattaustria, wiki, portal-start, shortfinal}. The Fin sectional sofa by Jehs&Laub Posted: 13 Jun 2012 12:00 AM PDT Fin is a very simple and very stylish sectional sofa. It was designed in 2012 by Jehs&Laub for MDF Italia and it has a contrasting but very stylish design. The combination of a thin frame with the large cushions is striking and it created an interesting image but it also has elements that, despite their contrasting styles, work very well together in this context. Fin is not a typical sofa. It doesn't really have a standard design. It's a very flexible and customizable system of sofas and sectionals that can be combined in various ways and can result in original creations. There are several elements that create a very nice balance: the thin frame and the large cushions, the geometrical and symmetrical base and the sofa and curved upholstery and also the rigidity of the frame and the cozyness of the sections. Fin is also a modular system that allows customization and this makes it versatile and easy to integrate in a variety of different decors.
The frame of the sectional/sofa is crafted from 3 cm thick MD belted fiberboard wood with a metal framework. It can be powder in several different colors including matte white and anthracite gray. This is made via a special varnishing process that ensures better resistance. The frame serves as a platform and it can partially be used as a coffee table or display shelf. The upholstery is non-deformable variable density polyether and polyester wadding and the cushions have removable covers. The Fin unit is available in both fabric and leather upholstery.
