Top 10 must have accessories for geeks

Posted: 01 Jun 2012 05:59 AM PDT

Are you a geek? How do you recognize one? I guess you just can tell because at any given moment a geek acts a little bit unusual and when he is not, a wrist watch or a T-shirt blows his "cover".  Let's enter in a geek's world and see what items surrounds them in the day by day life.

1.Ctrl -Alt -Del Pillows.

Anybody knows the "blue screen" on windows machines because that error took us to new levels of desperation. The famous "ctrl + alt + del" key combination that could debug the machine was something that you could dream about at night if you were a computer freak. Now with modern operating system that problem doesn't exist and as we can see some people created pillows with those symbolizing those keys for the nostalgic types. Available for 55$.

 2.Geek Clolck.

Geeks are well known for their advanced knowledge in mathematics so a true geek doesn't have a problem telling the time on this wall-clock.  It is fun for everybody because we already know where the numbers are placed on the dial and those who are good at math actually know what "3!" means. I'm an engineer myself so I would like one of this to brag about it. Available for 25$.

3.Interactive 8-bit Question Block Lamp.

Remember the games of our childhood?  Super Mario Bros was one of them with poor graphics but at those times a game was all about the fun you had paying it. This 8-bit question block lamp wants to remind us that games are meant to be fun not like these modern ones: after you play a little bit you get angry and want to step outside to take some fresh air. This lamp is a statement and a must have geek accessory. Available for 75$.

4. NES Controller Pillow.

Speaking of games, gaming console were and still are very popular not only among kinds. I remember the old Nintendo games with those two bulky controllers and I get a chill in my body when I see these pillows that look exactly like the real thing. Designs have changed over the years but this nice pillow mimics the first editions of the gaming consoles. Another video games enthusiast must have.Available for 30$.

 5.Bilk mario wall decals.

I don't know if kids today know what this representation on the wall means but my generation certainly does. I would like to see this "scene" in my children's room when I will have some but I would probably enjoy it more than they would.  The little kid inside everyone of us still wants to play and laugh and "kill some evil turtles" that is why nostalgic types paint their favorite childhood game on the walls because in a way that little child never disappears. Available for 75$.

 6.Periodic table shower curtain.

A true geek knows his science and a nice way to keep your memory fresh is to see things over and over again. A periodic table shower curtain is a little bit more that most of us can handle, but not a geek. This thing will automatically focus you attention towards "Al " , "Mg" , "Na" and so on. As much I would like to consider this geeky I can't because in my profession this shower curtain is rather useful.Available for 30$.

 7.Pixel heart mug.

Oh, the good old poor video games graphics. I remember the days when large pixels filled my PC screen and any graphical element had rough edges. These mugs have a pixel heart on them to remind those who know what I'm talking about the "origins". Found for 14$.

 8.Digital Rubik’s Cube Alarm Clock.

The Rubik Cube is well known in the entire world, for its complexity, despite that there always are guys who can figure it out in an instant. If most of us don't even want to hear about math, some people can't get enough of it. As proof of what I've just said stands this alarm clock Rubik Cube. Just twist the top row to switch between date, time, alarm or temperature. The 80's favorite toy is back!Available for 30$.

9.Zelda like Video Game Full Size Quilt.

Making your bed as a geek could mean putting your favorite video game quilt on display. This one is 100% cotton, machine washable and features "Zelda".  If you have different taste in video games your own can be in a different color with different characters and in any size you want; and this is nothing compared with the next geeky thing. Just scroll down a little bit. Available for 250$.

 10.Pi Ice Cube Tray.

This is "la piece de resistance" in my opinion in terms of geek accessories. Fund all over the mathematical sphere, "pi" is very common and without it a lot of things couldn't be explained, but to have a ice cube tray that "makes" Pi is a little bit more even for me. Made out of flexible blue silicone this tray is capable of making 9 ice cubes in an instant.  Put them in your partner's  drink and hope for the best; I cannot guarantee a second date though.Available for 4.95$.

Lately, I have seen that most of the cooking chefs love to use fresh spices for any kind of food although it refers to a desert or a regular dish. All these green spices are from the market or even nicer, they got them from their own flower pots. The rustic Lodge bar cabinet

Posted: 01 Jun 2012 01:18 AM PDT

A bar cabinet is a very functional and practical piece of furniture, especially for the dining room or living room. They usually have elegant designs so they are more than just storage units. The Lodge bar cabinet is a beautiful piece, with a simple and rustic design and a very functional interior. This elegant wooden piece of furniture would make a wonderful addition to any living room/dining room, regardless of the décor. It's simple but it's charming and it has the ability to integrate in a variety of decors, from vintage and traditional to contemporary.

The Lodge bar cabinet is part of the Lodge Collection and created by Kare. The unit has a wooden construction. The frame is made from plywood and the cover is buffalo leather. The overall dimensions of the cabinet are 0,95 x 0,8 x 0,53 m. It has a compact structure and, when opened, it reveals a beautifully compartmentalized storage space. There's enough space in there for glasses, bottles and there's also a drawer for tools.

Inside the cabinet there's an integrated wine rack that can hold up to 12 bottles. Additional storage space can be found in the other compartments. The space from the doors is secured with leather straps so the glasses and bottles placed in there won't fall when you open the doors of the cabinet. The whole piece weights 68 kg when it's empty. Since it will be much heavier when you fill it, the cabinet was equipped with mobile feet that allow you to easily move it around when needed.

DIY magazine rack with leather straps and wood

Posted: 01 Jun 2012 12:30 AM PDT

We all have magazines in our homes. They usually just ay around the house and get moved from one place to another. It's why magazine racks are very useful. They help you keep your home clean and organized and they actually take as much space as a magazine. This DIY magazine rack has a simple and vintage look like the previous mail project posted few days ago. To make a similar one you'll need a 5/8″ wide hardwood dowel, a 1 x 2 hardwood board, some leather straps, some heavy waxed thread and 1.5″ x 2″ brass rectangular rings. You'll also need some tools such as a saw, a drill press, a drill, a leather hole punch and a leather needle.

First you'll need to cut the wood pieces. Cut two dowel pieces to 14 inches and, using the drill press, drill 5/8'' wide holes for the dowels. Then use a 1'' screw to secure two pieces together at 7'' from the bottom. Next, slide the rings into place and open the legs of your rack until they stop. Use a pencil to draw a line that will indicate where the legs need to be cut. Now you'll have to disassemble your piece in order to cut the legs.

Next it's time to cut the leather strap pieces. Decide on the number you're going to use. After they are done, punch four holes on each end. After you have reassembled your piece, wrap a piece of leather around the dowel and decide where the holes need to go for the other end. Then use some waxed thread and tie it toward the back and cut the ends of the knot. Attach all the leather straps and space them evenly and your magazine rack is ready to be filled. We also have another article about a similar project but involving a mail basket.

New York-style loft in Vienna

Posted: 31 May 2012 11:40 PM PDT

There's something about New York lofts that's unmistakable. They have a certain flair and look and would allow you to recognize that style anywhere in the world. And just because it originated in New York this doesn't mean you can't recreate it somewhere else. For example, this loft is located in Vienna, Austria and it has a design inspired by the classical New York lofts.

The apartment is part of an apartment building that was originally a warehouse. It was then converted into lofts and offices and completed in 2005.This particular loft is owned by a family of four. Notice that the space is not divided into rooms but rather into some sort of boxes. There are three such volumes and they each fulfill a different function. The loft covers a total area of 260 square meters and inside there are separate zones with different levels of privacy.

One of the volumes includes the children's rooms. These spaces are acoustically separated by the rest of the loft with floor-to-ceiling acoustic glass elements. The parent's bedroom is another area and it's separated from the living area with large sliding doors. These two volumes are the privacy spaces of the loft. There's a third volumes, the biggest one, that includes the public spaces such as the living and dining areas and the kitchen. The top of these boxes can form either an office or a library. It's visible that the loft still features some of the industrial character of the building but it has been personalized with individual furniture pieces and a simple but very stylish interior design.{found on behance}.

Lovely nest chair for your patio area

Posted: 31 May 2012 08:57 PM PDT

Staying outdoors is great. Summer makes days longer and warmer and allows you to stay out and spend most of your day and even night outside. But you could learn a lot of things if you took the time to look around for a minute and observe nature around you. I am telling you – this can be inspiring. I did that and I saw a bird building its nest and that made me wonder. No knowledge, but still it is a great architect. It brings little twigs from all over the place and combines them into a beautiful weaving that offers comfort and security in the end. This could be the description of this Lovely nest chair for your patio area and I am sure it was inspired from nature. Its name suggests it clearly.

This is the Montauk Nest chair  and it is available on West Elm. It looks great and it even resembles a nest. It is perfect for outdoors, as it is made of wicker in Antique Palm colour. It even has an improved lightweight aluminum frame and these materials make it perfect for outdoors, as they are weather resistant. How to decorate a beach house

Posted: 31 May 2012 08:15 PM PDT

A beach house is a refreshing retreat, a place where you can relax, have fun but also enjoy stunning views of the sea or the ocean. But in order to do all that, the interior décor is critical. It needs to be light, airy, fresh but also flexible and versatile so that it allows for both relaxation and entertainment to take place. Each area of the beach house needs to be carefully decorated. We're going to use as example this beautiful beach house from Massachusetts

This lovely vacation home is very bright and airy and this is critical for any beach house. Let's take each area and see how exactly it's been decorated. We're going to start with the family room. Given the fact that this is a beach house where families and friends go together, this room needs to be spacious and very comfortable and inviting.

It's the place where everyone will be spending time together so it needs to be cozy but also simple. In this case we have an open floor plan with white walls, large windows, neutral chairs, a melon-colored coffee table and a faux-coral table lamp. The color contrast is delicate and with a beautiful impact.

The breakfast nook is also a very important area. It's the place where you can have your breakfast while also admiring the beautiful views of the sea and the space that you'll see in the morning and where you'll basically start your day so it needs to be impeccable. Here we have a casual approach with a braided rag rug, blue and yellow chairs and a white table. The views for this particular area are very important.

The kitchen in a beach house tends to be less important than the one at home because nobody wants to spend half of the day in kitchen preparing meals when there's so much to see outside. The kitchen needs to be simple, clean and spacious. In this case we have a vintage-style kitchen with green furniture and white walls. Perhaps that a contrast color would also be a nice addition.

The master bedroom needs to be, first of all, relaxing and calm. Here we have a perfect décor with pale green walls, large widows with sea views, a double bed with colorful pillows and nightstands matching the bedding.

And, of course, a beach house is not complete without a patio. There's no need for much furniture here. Some armchairs or lounge chairs and a table are enough. It would be smart to choose something colorful like in this case. Here we have a series of colorful wooden chairs in tones of red, blue and yellow that integrate beautifully into the whole image.{found on countryliving}.

The innovative Bertoia side chair with seat cushion

Posted: 31 May 2012 06:50 PM PDT

Simple, modern and comfortable, the Bertoia side chair impresses on more than one level. It's an innovative piece of furniture with a minimalist design and a versatile appearance. It seems very modern but it was actually designed by Harry Bertoia back in 1952. This is proof that visionary and beautiful designs are timeless.

The Bertoia side chair is made in USA by Knoll. Its original design was the result of an experiment that involved bending metal rods and transforming them in practical art. The experiment was a success and resulted in an innovative collection that included this chair as well. It's a strikingly simple piece with a simple, versatile and stylish look. Despite its metal construction, the chair has a very delicate appearance. It's a very beautiful and very well balanced combination between the durability and strength of the metal and the delicacy and elegance of the actual design.

The designer of this chair himself provided a very good description of this beautiful piece: “If you look at these chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture. Space passes right through them.” The chair had a great impact on the public and it has remained a very popular design and a classic model that will be perceived as modern even in the future.

The overall dimensions of the chair are 21.75″ w | 19.75″ d | 28.75″ h | seat: 17.75″ h. It features a frame made of welded steel with rods of chrome polished or powder-coated paint. The chairs are available in a variety of color finishes and they come in three different models: unupholstered, with a seat cushion and fully upholstered. You can purchase this beautiful chair at the price of $677.00. The entire Bertoia Collection has been in continuous production since 1952 and you can be certain it won't stop now.
