Cozy kitchen nook makeover

Posted: 25 May 2012 10:55 AM PDT

Since the kitchen is now a social space and not just a cooking area, people have started to include comfortable pieces of furniture in here. Some have comfy chairs, others sofas and some even decided to create a kitchen nook. Here we have a regular kitchen with a couple of armchair sitting by the window and a small table in between. They were quite comfortable but the owners had an even better idea. They decided to turn this space into a kitchen nook.

It took them 3 months to complete this project but keep in mind that they were only working at it during the weekends. They spent $1200 including the materials and everything else. Let's see how they did it. First they built a sturdy base using wood. It had to be durable and strong. Then they also built a box with drawers for extra storage. A heavy-duty seat base was created using MDF and the drawers were installed. Side compartments were then added for additional storage but also as a display space.

Next it was time to paint this nook and to add handles. When it was dry and ready, the cushions were installed. They had to be upholstered first. It turned out to be a very interesting project. It was less difficult than it seems and you can use it as inspiration for your own home. A kitchen nook is a great idea. It allows you to have a comfortable space to use while waiting for the ingredients to be ready or while you chat with friends.{found on designsponge}.

An oasis house with a beautiful interior design

Posted: 25 May 2012 09:04 AM PDT

Sitting in Valdecañas Caceres, in a swamp-like area, this house captures the entire beauty of the surrounding landscape. It's a very lovely private retreat with a very stylish interior. Since the landscape and surrounding outdoor areas were so beautiful, the owners decided to create a strong connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces. For this they added color and texture to their home and made it seem like an oasis.

Inside there are many beautiful details. The colorful cushions feature different prints and color combinations and they are a simple and very efficient way of creating a relaxing and casual atmosphere. The house belongs to a family with 3 children. As soon as they found this place they knew it was going to be a perfect family home for them. The location is wonderful, very quiet and surrounded by beautiful landscape. The swamp located close-by is a very nice element.

They decided to give the house a dynamic look. They personalized the interior décor and they added lots of colors. Of course, when they first bought the house, it wasn't exactly perfect. They had to make some changes that included accommodating certain areas to the family's needs, transforming one room into a study and expanding the property by creating new rooms and storage facilities. They also have a very beautiful garden designed by Jesus Ibanez and a porch to admire it from.{found on micasarevista}.

Make your own furniture using pallets

Posted: 25 May 2012 06:54 AM PDT

Pallets are easy to find and usually perceived as waste. However, if you know how to use them, you can create amazing items. For example, you can make your own furniture using nothing but pallets. We have three articles that will show you how to make dozens of different designs, from storage units to beds, lounge chairs, tables, vertical gardens and many other things. Some people even have entire rooms made of pallets.

It's impressive how something so common as a pallet can be used to create something as original and complex as a piece of furniture. The idea of using pallets is based on the concepts or recycling and autoconstruction. The great thing about it is that you don't have to poses specialized knowledge nor to be a professional designer to be able to make your own pallet furniture. They already have defined shapes that can be very helpful sometimes. In some cases, all you have to do is places two pallets on top of each other, paint them and your project is done.

After you do that you'll end up with your own table, chair, bed, etc. It will be something that you have created by yourself and that you can be proud of. Sometimes using pallets won't be enough. You'll also need some additional materials and you'll have to improvise and to be creative. If you need some inspiration you can check out our articles and there's even a magazine that specializes in pallets. There's you'll find instructions on how to create a particular piece of furniture but you can also adapt and change it to make it more original{found on behance}.

DIY bio computer with mini garden on top of its case

Posted: 25 May 2012 05:43 AM PDT

It's always nice to find a way of balancing technology with the organic side of world. The great thing is that you can. You can add some color and freshness to your interior décor with projects such as this. It involves the transformation of a regular computer into miniature garden. The project and the changes you'll have to make will not affect the performance of your computer. It will only allow you to grow fresh plants on top of it.

First you'll have to find a computer that you can play with. It has to be a working computer, not necessarily the one you regularly use. In this case, a Pentium 4 was used, the one that has a reputation for running hot. It was the perfect thing for this project. The grass that will be growing needs to be placed on top of the computer case.

The soil needs to be added. The heat generated by the computer will provide the perfect environment for the grass. Since this computer was only to be used as a decorative piece and it was specifically chosen for this project, the unnecessary pieces inside the case were removed.

The grass was a nice and interesting touch but the effect would be even more powerful if you could actually see the mechanism inside the computer. That's why a transparent case was used. An acrylic display case was placed on top of the computer case. Installing it might be a little tricky but it all works out in the end if you use your creativity and the items you have available around you. After you add the case you can place the components back in the computer. Then fill the case with soil and add some wheatgrass. Now all you have to do is wait for the grass to grow.{found on totalgeekdom}.

Long narrow Warburg house

Posted: 25 May 2012 02:19 AM PDT

Somewhere in Warburg in Alberta, Canada there's a very lovely home. It's a new house designed to replace the old one. The construction of the new building was completed in 2012. The house is sitting on an area of 748 square feet/ 69.5 square meters, on a wooden Canadian farmstead. It was designed by Jordan Allen and Ryan Trefz from bioi, in collaboration with Rob Marriott and VerdaTech.

The clients requested a simple house that would also be functional, efficient, economical and, of course, good-looking. Putting all these elements in the same design is not easy. The client also had another important request. He wanted this contemporary and energy-efficient house to be built for less than $100,000. The architects managed to make all that possible. They designed a house that sits 200 mm above the ground, facing south and with a meadow to the east.

The shape of the house is iconic and very simple. It's also elegant and pure-looking. Inside the house there's only one large volume. Two steel frames support it and its exterior is draped in black corrugated steel sheets. The house has two entries, one to the east and the other one to the west. It's a simple and clever ventilation system that also allows views of both the sunrise and the sunset. The western side of the house is completed by a log cabin that's a century old and used for storage. To the east the house features a small deck that leads to a small meadow. It's a nice retreat, simple but beautiful.{found on archdaily}.

The Mountain Range Two-Storey House in New Zealand

Posted: 25 May 2012 12:00 AM PDT

The Mountain Range House is a modern residence located in Brightwater, New Zealand. It's a very impressive building, not only by its size but also because of the stylish design. The house was a project by Nelson-based design studio Irving Smith Jack Architects and it was completed in 2009. It's a beautiful two-storey residence designed for an inter-generational family.

The luxurious house features a contemporary design that's neither too simple neither too opulent. It's a very stylish structure that also benefits from a lovely location and beautiful surrounding landscape. This new structure is an addition to the family's existing farmhouse. The existing structure was a series of separate spaces contained perimeter walls. The new addition is a little different. It's a pavilion with open spaces and transitional areas that create a seamless connection with the outdoor areas.

Notice that all the structures that compose the residence are arranged in a way that allows them to mimic the shape of the mountains located near-by. The roof has an asymmetrical shape and a silhouette similar to that of the mountains. This creates a beautiful and unusual connection with the landscape but also connects the pavilions and allows them to form a single volume. Inside the house, the timber ceilings create a nice symmetry with the timber floors. The atmosphere is warm and inviting and the interior décor is modern and elegant.{found on Patrick Reynolds}.
