Dynamic and stylish suspension lamps by Enrico Zanolla

Posted: 18 May 2012 08:14 AM PDT

Simple, chic and eye-catching, these pendant lamps are something different. They were all designed by Enrico Zanolla and they form an unusually interesting collection. The lamps don't impress with their opulence. They're neither too simple. These suspension lamps are the perfect combination of simplicity and glamour. They are very chic and stylish and they're the type of detail that would make any room feel elegant.

The lamps were designed as a tribute to the beauty of the St. Basil cathedral from Moscow. Their designs mimic the shapes and images that are most prominent and reminiscent of the cathedral. The shapes of the lampshade resemble the domes of the cathedral and the differences in color, size and texture are a symbol of the uniqueness of each dome. Even though the lamps have very simple shapes and designs, a great attention has been paid to the details and this is visible from the beginning.

The lamps were created entirely without using a 3D CAD. This was a challenge for the designer but also an opportunity to experiment and to make the project personal. The idea was to convert the domes of the cathedral into lamps. There are four different designs for the lamps. One of them is simpler and features a series of twisting lines. The other one is a more dynamic design. The lamps feature the same shape and they come in different sizes, colors and finishes.

Cozy bachelor pad by Michael Moeller Design

Posted: 18 May 2012 07:26 AM PDT

This inviting bachelor pad is located in West Village, New York City. It was a project by Michael Moeller Design and it covers a surface of 1,241 square feet. The pad is situated on the penthouse level. The interior décor has an industrial feel but it's also very inviting and cozy. The ceilings are low but, instead of making the space feel smaller, it gives perspective and depth and it shifts the attention towards the many beautiful details that make this bachelor pad unique.

The apartment was designed for a young and successful client that has been living in it for 1.5 years. It was his first real apartment and he wanted to make this place feel personal and to make it his home. Given the fact that the apartment was rented, he couldn't make any drastic changes. The structure and the layout had to remain intact and this presented a challenge. The odd layout and the low ceilings weren't the best choice but everything else was opened to transformation.

The walls in the living room were painted in a neutral and warm tone of beige. The furniture is simple and masculine, just like it should be in a bachelor pad. The client's favorite item is the antique marble top coffee table. It has lion paw feet and it's an eye-catching detail and one of the few detailed pieces. The kitchen has grey walls and vintage furniture and the bedroom is simple, with tan walls and a beautiful skylight above the bed.{found on apartmenttherapy}.

Comfortable and minimalist chair with storage compartments

Posted: 18 May 2012 06:58 AM PDT

Pierre Thibault recently designed a very interesting piece of furniture. It's a chair but the thing about it is that it's not just a chair. It's THE chair. It's exactly how its name suggests. This unusually striking and simple piece of furniture is offered by iGet it. Once you analyze its form and structure, it becomes immediately apparent that this piece of furniture was designed by an architect.

Even though the chair looks very rough and even unfinished, it's a surprisingly comfortable piece of furniture. It will first be presented in the US as of WantedDesign. Those curious to see it and analyze it closely can do that starting with May 18th up until May 22nd 2012. The chair has an architectural design. It features very clean and clear lines and an extremely simple design. It has clear angles and, despite its look, it's a very comfortable piece, even without seat or back cushions.

The Chair is the type of furniture you expect to see in casual modern homes. It's not specifically designed to be used in private residences. It can also be an eye-catching element for waiting areas or public spaces. The chair is made from wood and it has a natural finish. It has a design that keeps it very close to the natural look and texture of the wood. Moreover, the spaces underneath the seat and behind the back of the chair are not just for display. They can be used as storage compartments. It's why this chair would be great for reading corners. It's very comfortable and you can easily store your favorite books in those spaces.

Playful DIY kitchen windows

Posted: 18 May 2012 05:58 AM PDT

Windows are not part of the list of things that most people consider creating by themselves. They're usually standard items that are designed by specialists and installed by professionals. But, in this case, we're not talking about designing or building the window from scratch. It's a project that shows you how to personalize your kitchen windows and to make them more cheerful and unique.

The tools needed for a similar project include contact paper, scissors and an exacto knife. These particular windows had four panels. The idea was to create four images, one for each panel. The images included a fork, a knife, a spoon and a martini glass. If you want to create a similar image, the first step would be to measure the windows. This way you'll know the exact dimensions when you'll cut the contact paper. The next step is to cut out the images. You can find templates for the images and just draw them on paper. After tracing the contours, cut out the images and put them on the window panels.

The initial project is not complete. In this case, because the image didn't seem quite complete, a garland was also added. If you decide to adopt this idea as well, you can find all sorts of items to hang on the garland. They can be items related to the kitchen or things you simply love. And since your kitchen windows are about to get a makeover, maybe adding a fresh coat of paint would also be a good idea.{found on sweetpeachblog}.

Discreet house in Lavra by Nuno Merino Rocha

Posted: 18 May 2012 03:52 AM PDT

This house is located in Lavra, Portugal and it was a project by Nuno Merino Rocha. The clients only had two main requests. They wanted to house to seamlessly integrate into the landscape and they also wanted this to be a low cost project. The architect decided to the family what they asked for and more.

The house was designed as a very simple and discreet volume. It only has one volume and, when closed, it's a compact structure that naturally integrates into the surroundings. Even though the exterior is a monolithic structure, the interior of the house features different heights, elevations and it becomes a whole different structure. The interior and exterior are two very different things. However, they both have something in common: the simplicity of the design. Partially it's the result of the owner's option for economy but also a specificity of the modern design the architect had adopted.

The exterior of the house is obviously minimalistic. The interior is very similar to it in this aspect. There's almost a total lack of ornaments and decorative elements. However, this doesn't make the house uninviting and cold. On the contrary, this problem was cleverly solved by the architect's option for natural materials such as wood. There's a very nice balance between the simplicity and objectivity of the house's geometrical shape and the warmth and character of the materials and the interior décor.{found on architezer}.

Contemporary house in Portugal by Bruno Armando Gomes Marques

Posted: 18 May 2012 01:00 AM PDT

This house is located in Oliveira de Azeméis, in São Roque, Municipality of Oliveira de Azeméis, Portugal. It sits on a site situated between two roads, not the most suitable location for a private home. Its location means there's much more noise than usually and this can affect the users. Also, the exposure is higher than usual.

The house was designed by Bruno Armando Gomes Marques and it was completed in 2011. It has a simple, contemporary design and it's divided into two volumes. It covers a total area of 600 square meters. The two volumes have two distinct functions. On the ground level were places the social areas such as the entrance hall, living and dining rooms, the kitchen, the service bathroom and an office. On the upper level are situated the private areas of the house, in this case the bedrooms.

There's also a third level that includes the laundry room, the storage room and the garage. It's on the south side. The social volume is mostly neutral and features tones of grey and green. The private volume is a little more dynamic in terms of shape. The walls are white and the décor is simple. The third volume, the one that includes the garage and the porch is partially beneath the house and it was possible for it to be created thanks to the shape of the site.{found on archdaily}.

6 Alternative And Stylish Cabinet Doors

Posted: 18 May 2012 12:10 AM PDT

So you’re tired of the same ole dull, generic cabinet doors. They’re brown, white, black or just plain boring! Instead of hiding all your treats and plates behind the not-so-fashionable hinges, try using some alternatives to the usual wooden slabs and create something different and stylish!

Use something transparent to show off what’s inside … use something with movement to give it some texture … or use something unexpected to give a surprise. It’s all about creativity, what you’re vision is and what you want to create . Try stepping outside-the-box and be daring with your interior. Take a peek at some of these alternative and stylish cabinet doors and snag some much needed inspiration!

1. Take a look behind the Screens.

Wanna see inside what’s inside?  Try replacing the usual cabinet door with a screen. It has a super homey feel and it’s very welcoming for guests who need to grab a plate. It’s a bit country, a bit shabby-chic but a whole lot adorable. (Here is the tutorial to do it yourself!)

2. Re-use those beat up, old shutters.

For some fun texture and a stylish, vintage vibe replace old cabinet doors with old shutters. They look great. It’s a fun DIY.  It’s fairly simple to do. And when finished, gives the space a bit of a edge.

3. Bits & Pieces of Fabric.

For some flow and ease, try using fabric. When done right, the doors will create a natural, beautiful look and you can finally reuse some of that old fabric you’ve be dying to put to good use! Choose something neutral for a soft look or something bold for something a bit more eclectic!

4. Write on it: chalkboards.

Turn those kitchen cabinet doors (or even the pantry door) into chalkboards. Write what’s inside or what you need to grab at the store. Jot down phone numbers, notes for the kids, practice times and doctor’s appointments. After it’s complete, you’ve got something unique and something super functional!

5. Mirror, mirror on the … cabinet?

Create light and space with mirrors as your cabinet doors. It’ll open up the room, create an illusion of a bigger area and make everything brighter! It’s great for a more modern space or to create a more contemporary feeling.

6. Glass!

Quite the popular choice, glass is a great option when deciding to trade in the usual cabinet doors. Like mirrors, glass doors can create light and space and like screens will create a space to display your fun pots, pans or China.{picture from remodelingguy}.

Pigeon Roost turned into Mini Loft

Posted: 17 May 2012 10:00 PM PDT

With a little imagination and with the necessary resources you can come up with ingenious ideas for your home. You can have a house on a boat, a house in the trees, a transparent house, a house in a factory and, in this case, a house in a pigeon roost. This house has a very unusual look. That's because it was originally a pigeon roost.

The 360 square foot structure used to be a pigeon roost and it became abandoned and it started to deteriorate. However, the site was lovely and the structure was still salvageable. The owners of what is now a lovely home decided to start a renovation project. They had big plans for this structure. They wanted to renovate it but also to transform it and to completely change its function. The pigeon roost was about to become a family home and not for a family of pigeons.

The shape and exterior design were preserved. Of course, some things had to be changed in order to make the place livable. The exterior was painted grey and an exterior stairwell was added in order to offer access to the upper level. The structure was relatively tall but, given its original function, it only had one level. After the renovation that changed. The building was turned into a small but lovely mini loft. The kitchen and the bathroom are very small but, overall, the home is charming and inspiring.{found on dwell}.
