Turn an old file cabinet into a practical storage unit for the garage

Posted: 17 May 2012 10:37 AM PDT

Old pieces of furniture are just items waiting to be repurposed. With a little imagination you can come up with ingenious projects that your home can benefit from. For example, this is an old file cabinet. It used to be very useful in the office but, as it became old and out of fashion, other pieces of furniture replaced it. Instead of just throwing it away you can repurpose it and get a perfectly functional storage unit that you can use in the garage.

This DIY project is very simple. The materials you'll need are sand paper, spray primer and paint, painter's masking tape, casters, a peg board and a hanging kit, scrap wood, screws and a power drill. The idea is very simple. You take a file cabinet that used to serve for storing documents and other similar things and you turn into a storage unit but this time for something completely different. Also, it changed its look and instead of being positioned vertically it becomes a horizontal piece.

Start by sanding and wiping the cabinet clean. Then use primer and paint to give it a fresh look and add a decorative stripe if you want. You can use the masking tape for that. After it's dry you can continue with the project. Cut the scrap wood to a slightly smaller size than the base of the cabinet. Add the casters if you want to and make sure they are positioned correctly.

Then use a hand saw to cut the peg board to a slightly smaller size than each end of the cabinet. Next, mount the cabinet to the wooden platform you have created and secure it with screws. At the end you should have a practical, sturdy and easy to move around storage unit for your garage. You can use it to store all sorts of things, from tools to anything else that needs storage.{found on tttreasure}.

Long Narrow House in Sweden

Posted: 17 May 2012 09:12 AM PDT

The Widlund House is located in Sandvik, Öland, Sweden. It's a very beautiful example of Scandinavian simplicity. The house was designed by Claesson Koivisto Rune. The exterior of the house is white and the façade is very simple, with only a few asymmetrical lines meant to deceive the eye. The building has a very simple geometrical shape with clean lines and right angles.

The interior of the house is also very simple and bright. The house is filed with natural light coming through the large windows. One side of the house is completely transparent and features floor-to-ceiling glass walls. It's an element that creates a strong connection between the indoor and outdoor areas. At the same time it also provides plenty of natural light and allows the users to admire the expansive views of the surrounding landscape.

The Widlund House sits on the west coast of the Baltic Island. It's an unusual structure that stands out with its simplicity. It's in fact a white concrete box sitting in the middle of the site. The interior is functionally divided into private and social areas. There's a private two-storey bedroom volume in the rear of the house and a social double-ceiling-height space in the front. In order to achieve perfect precision and color, the architects that designed the house used precast concrete, not a very common choice for such projects. The house has a beautiful geometry and a very charming plainness that makes it simple but very stylish.{found on contemporist}.

Posted: 17 May 2012 08:24 AM PDT

If you love wildness in general and like the idea of having an animal trophy in your home but not the traditional type, Hed Lyte is a concept that will instantly catch your attention. This concept was the idea of Creative Session who then came up with a mini collection. It was an attempt to let you add a wild touch to your interior décor but still keeping in mind the functionality that is required.

Having decorations in the house can be a real treat but everything becomes even more interesting and practical when the decorations also have a functional side besides being purely for display. It's what this collection tries to offer. The pieces from this collection are based on a popular and traditional idea but the designers managed to offers them a modern look and to reinvent the whole concept. It includes two pieces: a deer and an elephant. It's actually only their heads.

The interesting thing about these modern trophies is that they have geometrical shapes and they also function as lighting systems. The deer's antlers and the elephant's tusks lighten up and serve as right accents for the interior décor. It's an interesting approach and a daring idea. Such unique decorations will definitely catch your guests' attention and will serve as focal points and conversation starters.

Steel Pony Rocker by J.Key Schneyorson

Posted: 17 May 2012 06:44 AM PDT

There aren't many variations in the case of the rocking horse. The rocking chair has been extensively exploited and constantly reinvented but the rocking horse has more or less remained the same ever since it was introduced in our homes. Still, it doesn't mean that the subject is closed. In fact, as J.Key Schneyorson shows us, it's never too late to revisit an idea.

J.Key Schneyorson has designed the Steel Pony Rocker. It's a modern version of the rocking horse and it has a design that shows the pure essence of this item. It's a very abstract approach to the classical design and the emphasis is on the steel structure. This version presents a more modern rocking horse. It seems to have only the pure structure, the skeleton and nothing more. It might not seem as friendly as the classical versions at first but once you get to analyze it closely you can see that it's more than just another design or approach on a classical subject but a real work of art.

The Steel Pony Rocker is a reinterpretation of the rocking horse and it offers a new perspective. It has a very different look but this only makes it stand out. It's composed of a minimalist steel structure complemented by a braided leather strip seat. There are no other details or accessories. It's the simplicity of the design that makes this piece so interesting and unique.

The beautifully restored White Villa

Posted: 17 May 2012 04:42 AM PDT

White Villa is a very beautiful property overlooking Santorini, a wonderful vacation destination for families and friends. The villa was restored a while ago by an architect who then decided to rent it to holiday guests. It features such a beautiful décor and the location and atmosphere were so relaxing and wonderful that he couldn't just keep all that to himself.

The original building, even though not livable, had many beautiful architectural elements such as the high vaulted ceilings and the think masonry walls that, together with the panoramic views, were the perfect setting for a holiday destination. The villa was then restored. It turned out to be a much more modern space than anticipated but the restoration also pays respect to the local architecture and original design of the building. The architect used local building techniques and materials and created a contemporary space.

The restored villa offers four units for rental on two main levels. Each unit has a living area, a dining area, a kitchen and bathrooms. The four units share a total of 8 bedrooms and 7 full baths plus 2 half baths. The property also includes several outdoor areas such as the exterior courtyards, the terraces and two large Jacuzzis. There's also a leisure pool and an outdoor dining area. A pool house then offers a full kitchen and a large dining table, a great space to spend time with friends and family. The guests will definitely enjoy a very war and pleasant stay.{found on welcomebeyound}.

Megan Lea’s Backyard House Built From Recycled Barnboards

Posted: 17 May 2012 03:44 AM PDT

When you have a house on your own property, there's always room for more. Additions and extra spaces are easier to create when you have the space for them. A nice example in this case is the Backyard House. It's a sort of extension of the main house and it's located in the back yard.

The idea was very clever and very simple. The back yard is a wonderful space to spend time in, to relax and to be alone with your thoughts. It's also a great space to use for an extension of the house, in case you need more living space. The Backyard House was intended as an extra space that could serve either as an office or a guest room. It's a rather small structure but that was the main idea. The 154 square foot structure was built in a small corner of the vegetable garden. It doesn't take a lot of space and it has its own corner where it's peace and quiet.

The extension was built using salvaged barn lumber. It was a relatively simple project and it was completed in just 6 months. It has an original look, given the different shades and textures of the wood used to build it. The mini house also has a salvaged copper roof. It was a cheap project and its owners now have a lovely extra space. They can use it a private office whenever they need some peace and quiet to work or they can use it as a guest room whenever guests show up and want to spend the night.{found on inhabitat}.

Tiny apartment with ingenious storage solutions

Posted: 17 May 2012 01:10 AM PDT

This apartment measures only a total of 37 square meters. It's not a lot of space, especially when there are so many pieces of furniture you want and have to include in it. But the owners of this place came up with a very ingenious solution. Notice that, in the living room, there's a platform. On it sits the sofa and the coffee table. The platform is quite tall and it required an additional smaller structure so that the user can get up there.

That platform seems to have no apparent use at first. The reality is that it's a very clever storage unit. Inside the platform hides a bed. Whenever the bed is needed, it just needs to be pulled out from underneath the platform. It's like the sofa sits on the bed. The solution is very practical and ingenious. Two major pieces of furniture occupy the space for one. The idea is particularly useful in the case of this apartment simply because it's very small.

The apartment doesn't lack other ingenious storage solutions either. For example, notice that in the living room there are two main storage units that are suspended on the wall. They take no floor space, they provide very useful storage space and, because of their color, they seem to be part of the wall itself. Another ingenious idea was to include a storage space for the bike in that small area in the hall. The bike is also suspended on the wall, takes no floor space and doesn't incommode at all. Moreover, the shelf underneath it can also be used for either storage or display. The key to decorating a small space is to be clever and ingenious.{found on vision}.

Link Bookcase

Posted: 17 May 2012 12:00 AM PDT

Who doesn't like the idea of absolute freedom? I know I do and probably a lot of you enjoy having a chill running down your spine when we rise in the morning watch the sun and think about how much we can accomplish in one day. Freedom of choice is also part of my philosophy; to know that I can do things however I want. Inspired by this particularly feeling this new bookcase was contoured.

Made by individual elements that can be assembled in any way you like, Link is an airy sculpture that can be in the same time a futuristic free standing bookcase and a room divider. Each individual element composing this bookcase is made as a whole, with no joints or other subcomponents, making it strong but in the same time a little bit sci-fi. Some say that Links resembles a futuristic creation from the '60s , I think it looks like freedom.

Why? Because this piece is based on a perpetual concept, making it very versatile and the owner has the possibility to add or remove elements at any given moment in order to increase or diminish its size vertically or horizontally. Another interesting feature allows you to use different colors for the individual elements. Each element weighs around 3,2 Kg. and can be everywhere in this Link network.{found on qui-est-paul}.
