Architect Jay Behr’s modernist residence on the market Posted: 16 May 2012 11:00 AM PDT This is the house of architect Jay Behr Design and Ewald Tajbaksh Architecture. It's located in Sausalito and it has views of Alcatraz and the San Francisco Bay. The house covers an area of 3,400 square feet. It's a large home and it seems even more expansive because of the open floor plan. It has four bedrooms and spacious social areas but the most impressive are, of course, the views. It was a very important factor when choosing the location. Inside, the residence features an open floor plan and, on the main floor, there are also high ceilings that further contribute to the overall impressive look. In order to take advantage of the views, the architect decided to go with glass walls for the great room and for the bedrooms. This allows the users to enjoy the wonderful and expansive views while chatting or simply relaxing in the living room or in the private bedrooms. The glass also gives the impression that the house is floating above the canyon.
The glass walls and the large windows, besides allowing panoramic views of the lake and the surrounding landscape, also let in lots of natural light and reduce the need for artificial lighting during the day. The living room is particularly bright and cozy. It has a vertical fireplace that gives it character and that further extends to all three levels. The whole house is made of glass and concrete. It has a modern design, minimalist architectural details and wonderful views that can also be admired from the landscaped terraces. It has been completed in 2010 and ever since 2011 it has been on the market for $2.95 million. Reconstructed apartment with a contrasting interior Posted: 16 May 2012 08:53 AM PDT This apartment recently got a makeover. It was reconstructed and modernized but it still preserved its original charm. The apartment measures a total of 167 square meters. It has spacious room, functionally divided and structured. The interior décor is very beautiful. The main concept behind this design was contrast. There's a very visible contrast of colors, between black and white, dark and light colors. However, these shades were very beautifully combined and they're not striking at all. In fact, they all combine harmoniously and result is a beautiful mix. The neutral tones have been beautifully complemented by shades of brown, beige and turquoise. The colors have different intensities and together they create a very charming atmosphere.
Another type of contrast is visible in the case of the furniture. There are some very beautiful mid-century modern classics that stand out and are complemented by both modern and vintage pieces. The combination of styles is indeed wonderful. Moreover, some of the apartment's original features have been preserved throughout the reconstruction. They include elements such as the stucco ceilings and basically anything found on the upper part of the walls. They add a very beautiful and elegant touch to the décor. These details, combined with the minimalistic furniture, result in a stylish décor. The atmosphere inside is casual, calm, relaxing but also elegant and somewhat impressive.{found on marieclairemaison}. Posted: 16 May 2012 07:38 AM PDT For the true nature enthusiast who love spending as much tine surrounded only by wilderness there is a Finnish example that can be embraced by many of you. I am personally a guy that doesn't like society very much at least not how it turned up so far and I don't necessarily need to be within some imposed standards to feel alive of be appreciated. In the woods covering most of Finland there is a micro-cabin that officially doesn't exist on papers and don't get me wrong, it is all completely legal. Finnish building regulations says that you will need a permit and a lot of authorizations if you want to build something that is larger than 96 to 128 square feet, depending on the district. This cabin has exactly 96 square feet and it is not under anybody's radar. Far away from the bureaucratic stuff this place features a small ground floor lounge/living area, kitchen and bathroom and on "first floor" the owner arranged it for sleeping and storage.
In addition to that space there is an extra deck surrounded only by great views and tranquil surroundings. On one side of the cabin a large window was mounted so the interior could benefit as much as possible from the natural light. If you like a minimalist living a micro-cabin like this one in the middle of nowhere could work great for you too.{found on tnl}. Posted: 16 May 2012 06:11 AM PDT Everybody knows that it is hard to make a kid sit on a chair for a while. It is almost impossible as he or she is so full of energy and wants to play all the time. Still, if you decided to make him or her sit for a moment, you would definitely think of a trick. It is the only way to make him or her do it your way. Some of the tricks may be related to an attractive place, seat or some interesting activities that he or she may like. Kids love playgrounds, colorful and playful pieces of furniture or watch some cartoons draw or play something. If you think that summer is near and most of the time you may spend in your garden, courtyard or somewhere in the open air, then some cute DIY Kids Folding Stools may be perfect for your agitated kids. The nice thing about this project is that you can create your own folding stools, the way you want to and decorate the way you choose. You may even ask your kids to decorate them as they like it.For this interesting and nice DIY project you may need some materials like: a cordless drill, a sewing machine, some grit-sandpaper, some screws, bolts, nuts, washers, some paint and some canvas.
Thus you will be able to design some lovely kid-sized seats that can be made of pine and poplar dowel. For the paint, you may choose any color that you want and the canvas can be decorated by you or your kids using different patterns.{found on lowescreativeideas}. Posted: 16 May 2012 05:50 AM PDT Wood is the most common natural material used in constructions. Since the early establishments people cut down big logs and built shelters. Many thousands years after those early establishments wood is still a part of our everyday life and still protects us from the nature's elements. I personally like wood very much and it makes me feel comfortable and safe. I can trust wood. Therefore I like seeing wood everywhere, in any corner of my house. One thing I like in particular and I didn't quite get the change to have it is represented by the exposed wooden beams. I live in Romania, the country of Count Dracula and a place with great history, castles and reminiscence of great cultures still very well preserved today. Exposed wooden beams are part of that. This type of architecture is suited for a warm interior that has a homey feel.
When people hear of exposed wooden beams on the ceiling, beams that support the roof automatically think of old, traditional. Let me tell you something; I have seen modern interiors that featured great horizontal wooden beams and nice glossy walls and cabinets. Still the exposed wooden beams "trademark" has a certain special charm that you will find only in traditional places; homes that have history and witnessed time passing by, generations over generations.{picture sources:1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and 10}. Contemporary apartment with Oriental and Spanish accents Posted: 16 May 2012 04:36 AM PDT This apartment is located in Warsaw, Poland and it was a decorated by interior designer Pawel Sókol. The interior of the apartment is very interesting. It has an overall contemporary feel but it's difficult to distinguish the exact influence. The reality is that there are several styles and influences that were combined and resulted in this stylish and elegant composition. The apartment features a combination of Oriental and Spanish elements. Notice the Oriental patterns from the hall wallpaper, the bedding or even the rug. These elements were combined with Spanish accents found either in the shades of colors used or something a little more specific such as the pendant lamp above the dining room table. Even though these are different styles that aren't normally found in the same place, they combine beautifully. Also, the rest of the apartment has a simple and modern feel. These are just small accents to break the monotony.
The main colors used by the designer are earth tones with touches of red and yellow. These colors create a warm and cozy atmosphere and they're both casual and elegant. The apartment seems very calm and inviting but also cheerful. Another major elements found in the apartment is the wood. Not only that the apartment has wooden floors throughout, but some of the walls are also covered with wooden panels, not to mention the matching furniture. The influences for the décor are limited but visually strong and meant to create a calm and tranquil environment.{found on decoist}. 7 Different Items To Use To Make A Collage Posted: 16 May 2012 01:04 AM PDT Creating collages of any sort is a fun way to use your imagination and creativity. And it’s an easy project to take on no matter your skill level. But we must remember that collages aren’t meant for paper products only and the idea of collaging can be used in so many other ways, especially around your home! Whether on a bedroom wall, near a work desk, on a side table or as a surprise in your hallways, collages liven the space up and provide some artsy ethos. Now … let’s take a peek at some items you may not have necessarily associated with collages but are great options! 1. Mirrors. Whether mismatched or the same, mirrors not only make a room large but they can also add natural light and major flair! Pair them up, design the collage yourself and you’ve created yourself a mini masterpiece! My favorite are mirrors without frames – they really widen the walls!{picture from tillyscottage}.
2. Frames. We’ve mentioned before that frames are good for more than just displaying family or vacation photos. Choose some funky frames to display in a cluster and they will bring the styling of any room up a couple of notches.{found on pinterest}. 3. Family photos. A beautiful and eclectic way to show off your family photos … is to use the collaging method. Create an art piece with all your favorite photos and you’ve got a wall to brag about.{found on photobucket}. 4. Doilies. Update your doilies and create something really fancy. This is a great way to showcase and show off these pretty little things without having that “old” appeal or stigma attached to them.{found on joyeverafter}. 5. Flowers. Collages don’t have to be up on a wall, but they can also sitting on your table. Use an array of flowers and vases to make a collage centerpiece. It’s pretty, dainty and great for a dinner party or bridal shower!{found on martha}. 6. Record Albums. Listening to a lot of old time records lately? Take those albums covers and build a savvy headboard collage for your bedroom or living room. It’ll be an awesome conversation piece and a very chic way to show off your music collection.{picture from bhg}. 7. Glass Bottles. Vintage or country-flavored, using a collage of glass bottles in the kitchen, on the table or displayed on the windowsill is such a feminine way to play up what you were about to put in the trash can. You may even want to add a flower or two during the spring to several of the bottles!{found on apartmenttherapy}. Double feature-House and Design Studio Posted: 16 May 2012 12:17 AM PDT Devolder Architecten a Belgium based Design firm completed in November 2010 in Kortrijik a building that has a double function: house and design studio. Before watching the pictures and make a first impression let me feed you some crucial information about this house. You should know that this is a remarkable contemporary structure. It has a solid concrete structure, mostly supporting poles on a very solid concrete base. The true modern feature in this house is represented by the Non-load-bearing walls design and build with the latest techniques and materials. They were built of acoustically absorbing materials with an extra layer of plaster and thanks to that bearing system they can be relocated without any major structural changes. Another interesting feature is the separation of the two functions with two different access stairs to allow a better circulation within the house.
This box-shape design doesn't necessarily blend in the surroundings but something tells me that this is exactly what they wanted. The first things that draw your attention are the wooden solar blinds mounted on both the southwest and southeast façade. A great deal of attention was given to the environmental impact; therefore this building is very well insulated from heat and cold with serious hi-tech materials. I like it; it has plenty of space, marvelous polished concrete floors, plenty of natural light and is very efficient providing a very comfortable experience with a very low environmental impact and minimal energy use.{found on archdaily and pics by Yannick Milpas.
