Today we had a "free for all". While we have always thought it was a great idea to have a "free for all" if you need to move a large number of things fast, today may very well have changed our minds.
We have not totally decided to do away with "free for alls" **yet** but until we decide what to do, we will at least make rules for such an event in the future.
The "free for all" today was my neighbor who has never used ReUseIt before. I told her what a great group it was and how fantastic the members are. It was to be her first impression of this group and how it works. I have tried to get her to join for quite some time now. Needless to say, her first impression was definitely not a good one. She always has great things to offer but has in the past just put them down by the street and posted a "free" sign on them.
Today I was embarrassed to see the way some people from this ReUseIt group can act. Other members as well as the person hosting the "free for all" came to me to tell me what they were seeing and hearing from certain members. So, I watched......... I saw greedy, bossy, self-serving and down right mean people. I likened it to a piranha demolishing something in the water. Don't get me wrong, not everyone was this way but one or two people can spoil an entire experience. All I can say is, these one or two members should be ashamed of themselves and they know who they are.
Anyone not following the "free for all" rules listed below in the future will be removed from the group.
Please show respect for others. Not only the person giving the items away but others that are there to pick up items as well. If an item is NOT in your hands or in your vehicle, it is NOT "yours". It is still available to anyone that is there for the "free for all" to pick up and hold or take to their vehicle. Just because the post says "take some or take all" it does not mean you are entitled to take everything if others are present and may want something. If other people have arrived they have just as much right to these items as you do.
Items that have been deemed "TRASH" are exactly that, TRASH. Please do not go through items that are not in the area of the "free for all" items. Some people may view this as an invasion of privacy. There may be things in their trash they do not want you to see, that might be dangerous to dig through or items that are out of date and could be hazardous to you. That is why it is trash and not a part of a "free for all". UNLESS there is verbal permission from the person hosting the "free-for-all" do not touch the trash.
Please do not throw items. It doesn't matter if the items are in the "free-for-all" and might be broken already,. Do not pick them up and throw them down on the ground. You may break an item that could be useful to someone else, not to mention physical safety.
Do not take containers that are holding items in the "free for all". If you want to take the container or tote, ask for permission. Otherwise take the item or items from the container and move them to your vehicle but leave the container there.
And finally, do not make a mess. If you have to sort through things, do so in an orderly manner.
We want to be sure and say THANK YOU to all the fantastic members on this group and thank you for taking the time to read this. If you are at an event such as a "free for all" and you see someone breaking the rules please try to find out what their user name is on the group and let us know.
Thank you,
Clermont, Florida ReUseIt Moderators
