In 2008, Beijing was the home of swimming and diving events for the Olympics so the Beijing Water Cube had to be reorganized as an international icon. Forrec Ltd. Architecture won the contract to design a water park within that structure and they had to work fast because they needed to make sure the new Happy Magic Watercube would re-open two years after the opening of the Olympic games. The team had to work hard but in 2010 the World Waterpark Association’s presented the Happy Magic Watercube.

There were some challenged to the project because the Water Cube's skin could not be penetrated so water slides and tower could not be extended beyond the structure, Everything had to stay within the building envelope. It wasn't easy to do that and to also make sure that the structure didn't look crowded and cramped. The structure have been combined into an enormous interwoven composition.

The new park is very colorful and attractive to the public. There are plenty of large, abstract aquatic elements like colorful air bubbles, see weed, coral and jelly fish that can be admired. It's a very dynamic and happy atmosphere. This high-quality themed water park was a big success and the project has expanded to other parks in Beijing and Nanjing and there are plans to further expand the structure throughout China.

Practical DIY Concrete Planters

Posted: 18 Aug 2011 06:55 AM PDT

If you are one of the persons who love plants and who also take acre of them you definitely need a lot of space and many planters where you can put them.Sometimes the size of a planter is chosen by the size of your plant. A big plant needs a lot of space while a small one does not need so much space.If you have some free time you may also get your own practical DIY Concrete Planters.

Here it is the list of the materials you need: 5 tupperware containers, 1 tub Sakrete Fast Setting Cement Patcher, as well as a few utensils and solos cups – specifically an old knife for mixing and a measuring cup that had been used for other non-food things and some succulents.

The directions on the cement tub instructed mixing 5 parts cement with 1 part water – so you mix one cup of the powder with just under a quarter cup warm water and then you start stirring. Stirring then led to dumping the concrete mix into your clean mold. With a little bit of pounding to remove air bubbles the surface will begin to spread out nice and neat.

On the other hand, here is another mix that includes more water – about a 4 to 1 ratio. It is instantly smoother and fewer air bubbles are released when tapped. For the center, where the little succulents will live out their adorable lives, you can use a simple solo cup as a mold.Then you will be able to plant the succulents which are so little and easily breakable so that you need to be very careful to your planting.{found on theselflife}

An Unforgettable Beige Apartment in Madrid

Posted: 18 Aug 2011 05:30 AM PDT

We all imagine our dream house, which must be large, nice and to reflect our personality. When you have a 105 m² house, all the furniture you cannot forget about representing you and all sorts of valuable objects you gathered in your life, things seem to be complicated. However, when your home gives you the warmest feeling you could imagine and every little object you own has its perfectly established place, things change. It is the case of a house in Madrid, which is the best example of a wide space with a pleasant air, given by the natural light and warm colors.

The beige walls and the white high ceilings are the perfect combination; nothing compares to the natural atmosphere the bedroom provides, with the simple lines of the furniture, the use of good materials: wood, metal, crystal, all these prove good taste and high quality. Once you enter the door, you encounter a unique feeling that  makes you feel welcome in the most contemporary ambient with the most neutral colors.

The warm tones fit perfectly with the shades of black, brown and red that can be seen in the pieces of furniture, in the paintings on the walls, in the decorative objects that provide that unique personal mark that turns a house into a home. The mixture of Brazilian and Asian elements, sliver, ceramics or textiles, the abstract paintings and the general contemporary mood of the entire space create a warm and serene environment, which makes you feel comfortable.{found on micasarevista}

Karen’s Beautiful DIY Planter Box

Posted: 18 Aug 2011 03:06 AM PDT

These days I helped my grandmother to clean one of her rooms and throw away some old and out of fashion stuff. Among the old teapots, out of fashioned clothes or other old stuff I found some old pieces of mirror. They were in good shape and I thought what I could do with them instead of throwing them away. Sometimes old stuff can become incredible new things which might be useful to you.

Then I reminded of Karen's Beautiful DIY Mirrored Planter Box. All you need is some beveled mirrors and a hot glue gun.Scrape the stickers off with a razor squeegee. Trying to peel them off will only end in tears and pill popping. Lay your base, mirror side down and hold one of the mirrored pieces up to the edge of the base.

Once you are sure everything is even and level run a bead of hot glue along the seam where the edges meet.Wait patiently for the glue to dry before moving onto the next piece of mirror. This is exactly when the bottom of your foot will feel like it needs to be scratched.Continue lining up and gluing the bottom and side edges of the mirrored pieces.Now your interior décor may be completed by these gorgeous planter boxes or your terrace will get more color and life with them.{found on theartofdoingstuff}

O House in Australia by Reitsma and Associates

Posted: 18 Aug 2011 02:13 AM PDT

The guys from Reitsma and Associates comes to us with an impresive house designed by Trevor Reitsma,the O House boasts innovation in design with its feature central court and attention to detail. Located on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia, the dwelling is perfectly suited to the local climate with its seamless indoor/outdoor nature. Situated on a canal front in an urban Estate the brief was to ensure canal views were exploited, however privacy and zoning were additional criteria to be addressed.

The feature central court enables key criteria to be met. Complete with a pool, breakfast patio and deck the court provides a private outdoor space which is usable all year round. Floor to ceiling glazing frame the central area providing a glass sandwich effect and allows natural light to flood the primary living zones and walkways.

This lowset dwelling is cleverly zoned into main living area, bedroom strip and entry via the interconnecting court. The court can extend to the canal front covered outdoor living and family area via large multi track sliding doors, which can be completely recessed into the wall cavity for the ultimate in outdoor living. As a single depth building cross flow ventilation is exploited perfect for warmer climates while the central fireplace ensures occupants can experience outdoor living during the cooler months.

Visually the home boasts horizontal forms created via the inverted low pitch hipped roof, effectively leaving all elevations to act as a clean lined canvas with interest  added through a combination of steel portals, full height glazing and feature stack stoned wall. The indoor/outdoor nature of the home is heightened by finishing details such as the recessed tracks to the court and canal, uniform tiles for indoor and outdoor zones and the use of timber decking and battened walls which bleed from the entry to the foyer. Internally the visual simplicity is mimicked via upmarket kitchen fittings, subtle raked ceilings and outdoor views from all main living areas, walkways and immediately upon entry. The visual result is similar to the signature post and beam work of architectural styles in the 1960′s.

The Bondi Rooftop Penthouse by Brian Meyerson Architects

Posted: 18 Aug 2011 01:04 AM PDT

I'm sure a lot of you know it's like to desire to live in an area where there's literary no additional space available for you to do that. So you usually give up that dream and try to find another one, more realistic this time. However, there is a way to achieve the impossible. It's what the owners of the new Bondi Penthouse did.

They really wanted to have a home in Bondi Beach, one of sydney's iconic beaches, but there was no space available for them to do that so instead they decided to build their home on top of an already existing building. This rooftop penthouse is located on top of a 1920 building and it's almost invisible from the street.The entire project was done by Brian Meyerson Architects.

It's a three bedroom and three and a half bathroom penthouse that also features a large deck terrace and an unexpected indoor/outdoor swimming pool. That's not what you'd expect to see on top of a building. There was an existing alcove on the building and this provided the new owners with an entry point. They added a new spiral staircase creating a very different look than the existing one, a little more modern. In fact, there's a very clear distinction between the already existing building and the new addition. It's a clear delimitation between old and new that isn't visible from the street.

The penthouse features a long corridor that links the bedroom and the living areas. The kitchen and laundry are located to the south and the bedrooms are on the north side. There were some advantages for the owner in this case because he was also the developer and builder so he was able to work with people he knew and trusted and was able to design the perfect dream home.
