Breathtaking Views in Waikopua Bay

Posted: 12 Aug 2011 08:23 AM PDT

This next single-family residence was designed by Auckland-based practice Daniel Marshall Architects and was a finalist of the 2010 New Zealand’s HOME of the year. Located in Waikopua Bay on the Waikeke Island, 11 miles from Auckland, in New Zealand, this house is a lovely oasis.

Set in an idyllic private bay, the architects had to take into consideration the ridges on both sides of the building platform. The vision was to create a house like a family group camping site. A very important aspect was to allow enough space for the boats and water to move through the valley to the bay below.

The house was designed to blend in with the landscape and be empathetic to the fauna. The stone walls were sourced locally, the windows are tinted to limit reflection and the timber upper floor stained dark to blend into a bush behind. Moreover the house has soft, neutral tones that create the feeling of an airy space. The living space has a cosy fireplace as the focal point, the kitchen is equipped with multitasking, multifunctional stainless steel appliances and the bathroom has a lot of modern features.

The Waikopua House is a beautiful residence set in a gorgeous landscape and benefits from stunning breathtaking views. It is a warm and welcoming place to land.

UFO Table from Inmod

Posted: 12 Aug 2011 06:04 AM PDT

I have wondered many times how come UFOs look like flying saucers and not like something else. Why aren’t they perfectly round or oval or even square? Why do all of them have this particular shape and look? Any way, I do not necessarily believe in aliens and stuff , but I do like unusual things. And this coffee table shaped like an UFO is certainly unusual. It is modern and nice, with an UFO looking white base and a sheet of transparent glass on top of it.

As you can see , it looks perfectly like the UFOs you see on TV or in the magazines, hence the name. But it is nonetheless a piece of furniture that can be used as a nice coffee table and for giving a special look to your living room. You can also use the space between the table base and the top for storing magazines or some useful books and papers. You can purchase it now at Inmod for $9,600.

Purple Living Room Design

Posted: 12 Aug 2011 05:39 AM PDT

When we decorate our house we do not simply buy things that we see in the store and then try to find their place in our homes. If we do this we will have a chaos and a weird mix of styles and colours and everything will look funny, but not in a good way. So most of us try to choose a style and a colour for the living room and then choose the matching furniture, drapes, carpet and all the other accessories that complete a room. And , of course, this colour differs a lot from house to house, depending on the owner’ s taste and style. Today I am going to show you some inspired designs for a purple living room.

Purple is the colour of royalty, the colour of good judgement and of those seeking spiritual fulfillment. It is good to use in meditation because it gives you peace of mind. It is said that most artists prefer this colour and that it attracts positive energies. However, it is seldom chosen as the colour of the background for people’ s living room. That may be because you cannot combine  it with other colours easily and it looks awful near brown and most furniture pieces are made of wood, so brown in colour.

Any way, the secret of having a nice-looking purple living room is to combine purple with white. This combination is the best and try to use lighter hues of purple for a conservative classic look. If you want to have a modern stylish purple living room, then you are free to try stronger hues combined with metallic grey and maybe black. Choose violet or pink accessories and an adequate lighting, as this colour does not make your house bright, but on the contrary. Just try not to go to extremes.

The Longest Navigable Aqueduct in the World

Posted: 12 Aug 2011 02:43 AM PDT

Did you know that the longest navigable aqueduct in the world is in Germany? I did not! When you think about it, the longest navigable aqueduct, you realize that only a civilized country, with a high standard of living can implement a project of this scale. In addition, as everyone expected, Germans did a great work! The existence of the Magdeburg Water Bridge dates back to 2003, when it became the longest navigable aqueduct, with a total length of 3.012 feet or 918 meters.

It crosses the Elbe River, connecting the Elbe-Havel Canal to the Mittelland Canal. Its construction represented a priority for Germany that started to build the aqueduct in 1997. According to the sayings, the costs came to 500  million Euros.  Beyond the fact that it was considered a priority at that time, the bridge was a success, which has shown what people are capable of doing.

At the same time, what is very important is the fact that it connects  Berlin’s inland harbour network with the ports along the Rhine river. What else could you think of? Another advantage is the double lock that allows vessels to descend from the level of the bridge and Mittelland canal to that of the Elbe- Havel Canal. This is only another example, which proves that people can do whatever crosses their mind in order to improve their lives and the others’ lives. If you have the chance, go and try the longest navigable aqueduct in the world! Maybe you come up with another brilliant idea!{inf from Wikipedia and pics WSV}

Flat Flowers for Decorating Your Windows

Posted: 12 Aug 2011 01:08 AM PDT

All the women in this world love flowers because they are colourful and pretty and if you have some flowers in your home it looks like the whole atmosphere has already changed. And since there is at least one woman in every house, you will certainly see flowers around the house every now and then. But natural flowers fade away and the flowers in the pot are not always in bloom. So the Dutch designer Suseela Gorter thought of a trick to let you always have beautiful flowers in your home. She designed some special stickers for your window that are shaped like vases with colourful flowers in.

If you apply these stickers called “Flat flowers” to your window,  they will look great both from outside, but also on the inside. And because they do not use adhesive, but are made of a static material, you can peel them off and re-apply them somewhere else. And if you are not convinced yet, just take a look at these pictures and you will see just how nice these flat flowers are and how merry is the room where they are used. Oh, you can have each item for $15 and you can choose your favourite design here.

Stunning Eco-friendly Loft by Fernanda Marques Architects

Posted: 12 Aug 2011 12:19 AM PDT

Today we would like to present you an eco-friendly wonder in Brazil. This next loft was designed by Fernanda Marques Architects for the Casa Cor 2010 exhibit. Inspired by sustainability issues, this is a home that expands horizons, that is open to the world, nature and its inhabitants.

The house is covered, both in and outside, with recycled wood which gives it a rustic feel. Another green feature is the LED system which they adopted to lower energy consumption. Moreover the building’s supporting pillars are the tree trunks originally from Bahia.

The architects designed a modern open plan space which houses a living area, gourmet kitchen that is equipped with upscale stainless steel appliances, bar and a video hall. The living area seems huge and this is possible due to the floor to ceiling windows and the skyscraper picture on one of the walls. Furthermore the bar has a sculpture like a mountain form behind it, which is also used for storage and captures light beautifully. The sculptural element can be found in the living area, as well, serving as a bookcase.

As you can see, throughout the entire space there are a lot of wooden elements and there is a lot of vegetation, which give it a natural look. This loft looks like it’s been taken out of a magazine cover. It really is a tribute to nature.

Expensive Dog Houses by Best Friends Home

Posted: 11 Aug 2011 11:39 PM PDT

These kinds of images make me smile because they make me think about my own dog and I already imagine how she would look like in such a house. In a world in which pets occupy a very important place in our lives, being the best friends that always give us unconditional love, no matter how long we are away, it is important to provide everything they need in the best conditions.

What some people consider normal things their dogs should have, others may consider strange, if not crazy to pay so much for a doghouse. If you consider your dog a family member and you can afford it, why not? It is your dog, your money and you can do whatever crosses your mind, no matter what the others might say.

Fairytale

The German company “Best Friends Home” seems to understand people who would buy anything for their dogs and came up with a very nice idea, that of building some stunning dog mansions. They created four different models, each being an example of quality and richness of details.

Alabama

Lönneberga

All you have to do is to afford it, as its price starts from 2800 dollars and to have where to place it. No matter you choose the elegant model, which seems to be a miniature house, the modern one in red and white called Cubix with a glass window that allows you to see inside; the pink one or Fairy tale, orAlabama, each seems to be the perfect choice. If your dog is happy, you are happy!
