| Hagia Sofia in Istanbul – a Survivor of Byzantine Architecture Posted: 27 Jun 2011 10:38 AM PDT Religion is very strict when it comes to the places of cult where you practice it and these places differ very much depending on that particular religion. You can recognize a Roman-Catholic church from the outside and also a synagogue or a mosque. That is possible because they have a totally different architecture. But sometimes all these rules are broken and you face a wonderful mixture and styles and that’s what makes the place unique. I am talking now about Hagia Sofia or Ayasofya in Istanbul that is presently a museum and one of the most famous remnants of Byzantine architecture.
It was in turns an Eastern Orthodox Cathedral, a Roman Catholic Cathedral and a Mosque, all in different times in history, depending on who conquered Istanbul or Constantinople at the time. So it looks like an Orthodox Church with Muslim minarets. It is unusual, yet incredibly beautiful and each cult has left nice marks on it. The original cathedral was built by Isidore of Miletus Anthemius of Tralles and is decorated on the inside with mosaique and marble pillars. It is tall and richly decorated, preserving in a perfect manner the base-reliefs that were specific to Byzantine architecture. It was a place for coronations and asylum for the ones in need and still attracts lots of tourists or pilgrims every year, because it really is a wonderful architectural monument. |
| Posted: 27 Jun 2011 09:57 AM PDT Here's an idea that I'm sure everyone will like. It's a very interesting detail that makes this sofa very special. The K-01 sofa bed is not a very impressive piece of furniture when you look at it. It has a very simple design, clean lines, no additional details. What makes is special is its ability to adjust the angle at which it inclines. Another very important detail is that this is a double back sofa. This means that if two persons are seating side by side on this sofa they don't necessarily have to seat in the same position. One half can be a sofa while the other can be a bed. It's useless to say that the sofa is convertible and it can easily become a very comfortable bed. These new additions are actually very useful because they can help the user feel comfortable regardless of the actions he's performing. For example if the user is watching TV he'll need a more comfortable position. If he's just sitting there talking with someone the standard position is perfect. Also, when extra guest come over, a bed will be necessary. It's a very practical solution. The sofa is modern, beautiful and also very functional. This comfortable double back sofa is available for $750. Also, you can choose another color if you don't like black. The sofa is also available is brown or white leather textile. |
| A Simple Ski House in Hobe Sound, Florida Posted: 27 Jun 2011 09:10 AM PDT The so-called “Ski House H2O” is a building located in Hobe Sound, Florida designed by Hughes Umbanhowar Architects. Its owners are water ski fans, a proof in this respect being the fact that the existing artificial lake has been modified in order to be used for water skiing. The entire design has the role of engaging the lake in many ways. The building in itself follows the pattern of a simple bar divided into 3 areas: a wing for guests, a public space and a main bedroom. All these three wings are united under the same metal roof which, at the same time, offers shade to the lakeside terrace. The covered spaces between the wings are used to maximum, with exterior fireplaces, an exterior shower.
The materials used are modest, thing that gives the entire building an air of simplicity; the exposed concrete is a dream and the typology, the program, the light, the air and the surrounding environment in general are refreshing.
The place is not expensive, but it has that essential dramatic character, it is a simple but elegant home, everything being beautifully balanced. The kitchen is simple and adequate, it is perfect and it makes you want to try it. The entire concept of the house, its location, the building in itself and the surrounding area are the best example of simplicity and balance. |
| Posted: 27 Jun 2011 08:25 AM PDT Time is relative. However, measuring time is an exact science. So you can rely on your senses when you need to get to a meeting for example because you'll probably be late. That's why clocks are so useful. They are also very common. Everyone has at least one in their home. This means that it's hard to be impressed by a design when there are so many. However, this particular design from Opal Clocks is not something that you see every day. It has a very distinguished look and it's more than just a useful item that helps you tell time. It's a very beautiful decorative piece as well. What's interesting about it is that. The actual mechanism is very small and placed in the middle while twelve satellites are placed around it. These satellites are the replacements of numbers. This means you'll have to spend a little more time before you can be sure that you have the right time but you'll get used with it very quickly. This Metal Umbrella is a very modern approach to the traditional clock. It's a more playful design that also makes this old piece more attractive. The clock is made of metal and it has chrome hands. It's available for EUR 73.08. It would be a very nice addition to a modern or contemporary home. |
| Casa Kimball – A Luxurious Villa Posted: 27 Jun 2011 07:23 AM PDT Casa Kimball is a luxurious villa located in Cabrera, Dominican Republic designed by Architect firm Rangr Studio. Once you see it, you realize you are dealing with luxury, high quality and the highest standards in design. The first thing that comes to your mind and definitely impresses anyone is represented by the breathtaking views over the Atlantic Ocean that you can take advantage of, no matter where you find yourself. The house in itself was built on a wide area, as if it tries to defy the immensity of the ocean and prove that it is definitely a place which worths being taken into consideration and appreciated. The stairs give that necessary feeling of safety you need when you see mostly water, the building is surrounded by a kind of defensive wall, but also by trees and plants which seem to protect the entire location.
The house has an interesting design, with its open-space characteristic features, giving the impression of a giant boat floating at sea. Every corner in this place seems to be created in order to offer a different perspective over the ocean. If the outside suggests strength and safety, the inside is the perfect model of modernism, luxury, elegance and style.

| The new Clancy’s Fish Bar at City Beach Posted: 27 Jun 2011 05:30 AM PDT Paul Burnham Architect was chosen to design the new bar for Clancy's Fish Pub located in Perth, Australia. The new bar is actually a renovation of a ten year old restaurant that was once there. The new construction is placed directly on the white sand. The clients will feel more welcomed this way. The bar also allows them to admire the very beautiful Indian Ocean. The idea behind this new project was to create a very colorful and happy space using vibrant colors. The result had to be a very friendly family pub where anyone would feel welcomed. In order to achieve that look the ceiling had to be painted in black so that the contrast with the other vibrant colors would be stronger. Then the whole ceiling was covered by twelve lavish fabric chandeliers. The chandeliers are very colorful and playful, using vibrant colored fabrics perfect to express the atmosphere of summer holydays. The floor, that was originally covered with concrete, is now painted with all sorts of funny patterns like mermaids and children's games. This way everyone will be happy.
Overall this is a very colorful place with a festive design. It's a very pleasant place where the whole family can feel good, have a drink or something to eat after returning to the beach for more fun and relaxation. |
| Posted: 27 Jun 2011 04:05 AM PDT I don't think anyone ever though of this combination. A beanbag and hammock put together is not something commonly seen. However, this combination exists and it's called the Beanock. It looks like a very comfortable creation. The Beanock is actually a sort of oversized hammock or a suspended sofa. It can be used by several persons at a time. It's a very resistant and very safe item. It uses high quality metal rings so it should be very safe. The Beanock is a great item to have in your garden. All you need to do is find something to hang it from. It's simple to assemble and easy to store after you don't need it anymore. The Beanock also comes with a couple of matching pillows. You can always add some more for more comfort. This oversized hammock is also a very versatile piece. It can be used both indoors and outdoors. I still think that the outdoor is the best solution. It's equally comfortable no matter where you place it but it's not a practical piece to have indoors. It takes quite a lot of space and it requires permanent mounting hardware on the walls.
It's an unusual combination. However, it looks very comfortable. It comes in several color options so you can match it with the décor or simply choose the colors you like best from le beanock. |
| Posted: 27 Jun 2011 03:50 AM PDT I am sure you all know the story of “Hansel and Gretel” with the two kids that get lost in the woods and see a gingerbread house while wandering through the forest. Well, it is a challenge for the imagination of all children to make up the image of a gingerbread house. Of course famous sweets shops had some gingerbread houses displayed on Christmas or Easter, but they were small. So I couldn’t stop wondering what a real size gingerbread house would look like. That is until I found this Gingerbread House in Utah on the Internet.
It is located in Park City, Utah and belongs to a nice family that offers them to tourists who want to admire the wonderful mountain scenery around. The guests will enjoy a nice stay and benefit from the warmth of the local people and the comfort of the four suites with a big dining room and each of them having nice fireplaces that work on gas. They also have the possibility to have a healthy organic breakfast there and stay for as long as they want to. The house is also available for wedding parties and other celebrations. And yes, it does look like the gingerbread house in the story. |
| Shower curtains with built-in storage Posted: 27 Jun 2011 03:04 AM PDT In a small bathroom every inch is important. So people tend to make sacrifices. They opt for a shower instead of a bathtub, for smaller cabinets, etc. Here's an idea that will help you save some space and will also make your bathroom look more enjoyable. It's an idea that came from Wintercheck Factoy. What they did was to design a shower curtain that does more than just hang in there. This one also provides some very useful storage space. The curtain has two large self-draining pockets on the outside. These are very useful for all sorts of things and accessories that you might use in the bathroom. And you don't have to worry about the water. On the inside there are four large self-draining pockets for things like shampoo and conditioner. You can store in there eight regular-sized shampoo and conditioner bottles. There are also two loops, a small one and a large one. These were designed for toothbrushes and razors. In addition to all that, each edge has convenient towel loops.
With a shower curtain like this one you don't even need cabinets anymore. The curtain is made from 200 Denier 100% Oxford Nylon. The material is machine washable and water repellent. Overall it's an extremely practical idea, especially for small bathrooms. It's a way of saving some space while making your bathroom look beautiful. The curtain comes in various colors. |
