Apartment With Creative Emmental Stairs by Biljana Jovanovic

Posted: 31 May 2011 10:40 AM PDT

Croatian architect Biljana Jovanovic recently designed some very fun and creative stairs for a young family with two small children. In order to create a modern look, the designer chose to incorporate into the design a lot of circle and semicircle motifs. This is why the final product ended up looking like a piece of emmental cheese with all those holes.

It's an original idea and an interesting way of personalizing the apartment. But, considering the fact that this family has two small children, the safety issue is very important in this case. Even though the designer claims that the stairs are very safe, this is hard to believe especially after we find out that the little girl uses them as a toy. They might look interesting and fun, but I wouldn't recommend them for families with small children. It's always better to be safe than sorry.

Other than that, the design is nothing but beautiful and fun, perfect for a modern apartment or house. It's a great example of how elementary piece, like the staircase, can become an eye-catching and artistic detail, a decoration in itself. So I really find this staircase design modern and very interesting. Still, the safety issue might be a problem. But for a young and modern single family, this is a very good choice.

Gorgeous “Virtue of Blue” by Jeroen Verhoeven

Posted: 31 May 2011 10:15 AM PDT

Blue color symbolizes many things. It can refer to physical things, metaphorical symbols or can characterize somebody. First of all it is always associated with the blue sky or the blue sea. Then, psychologically speaking, a person who loves blue is associated with certain moral and pshychological characteristics.

The Dutch artist and designer, Jeroen Verhoeven used this wonderful color and combined it with the shape of some butterflies in order to create a gorgeous "Virtue of Blue". Butterflies have always fascinated us with their wonderful colors and float in the air. They usually gather around a source of light if they are specie of night, like many other insects which seem to be attracted by different sources of light.

"Virtue of Blue" is the title for a beautiful chandelier, made from five hundred solar butterflies which seem to float around a source of light, which is a hand blown glass bulb.

During the day these five hundred butterflies cut from sapphire blue photovoltaic cells collect the solar energy so that the lamp can produce light during the night. It is a gorgeous solar chandelier which can create a special romantic ambiance or which can charm you with its beautiful blue butterflies.

When you want to remodel your kitchen there are some things you should take into account, mainly functionality, lighting and appliances. Today we are pleased to show you one of the works of Australian designer Darren James.

The clients wanted to recreate their dream kitchen by creating an open plan space integrated into the living room, while having visual access to the outdoor pool; a place where you can enjoy the company of your family and friends. By bringing down the wall between the living room and kitchen the designer obtained a great space for his project. One very important aspect you have to consider when doing a thing like this, making two different areas one, is to keep the flow throughout the entire place.

The new upgraded kitchen has an unusual “L shaped” island bench, where people can pull up a chair, have a drink, have a meal. It also provides additional serving space when entertaining. As you can see, there is a lot of room to cook and store food, to prepare meals with the state of the art appliances. Another important feature is storage and here you can see a lot of cabinets and inner drawers.

If you want to redesign your kitchen this is a good example of modern living and dining. It is a multifunctional, multitasking kitchen that has well placed light fixtures, storage, sleek tile, great appliances. It is set for eating, entertaining and elegance.

Barn doors for a unique design

Posted: 31 May 2011 08:32 AM PDT

To speak frankly, there is something very rustic and classic about barn doors. Don't you find yourself staring at the barn doors installed at the barn entrances when you take a drive down to the farm? Well, if you really find barn doors very interesting, why not integrate them with your home elements.

Introducing barn doors to your home will definitely add oodles of functionality as well as a character to your home. No matter what type of theme you wish to create in your home, barn doors will definitely support the theme as there are highly versatile and available in a wide variety. You will be glad to know that barn doors are earthy and rusty, as well as sleek and modern. In addition, the most significant feature of barn doors is that they can be used outside as well as inside.

Here is a list of useful ideas to use barn doors in different ways for unique design –
The easiest way to introduce a barn door into your home interiors is to replace your main front wooden door with a barn door. If you have a large entrance which can accommodate two doors, you can install two sliding barn doors moving in opposite directions. Sliding barn doors are quite heavy, and secure too. On The other hand, if there is space for a single door only, you can select Dutch type of barn doors, which function like traditional doors.

Barn doors are great selections for the bedrooms also. Besides the creation of a cool look, rusty and lofty feel will also be imparted to the room. If you choose to go with the traditional earthy tones for the barn doors, exposed bricks and ceiling beams would complete the look. Alternatively, you may paint the barn door in any color you prefer depending upon the theme prevalent in the room. Barn doors painted in pristine white color are excellent for the master bedroom, whereas bright red colored barn doors may be selected for the children's bedroom.

Another interesting idea to employ barn doors and at the same time, add a lot of punch and drama to the house is to use the barn doors for the closets. Sliding barn doors in the traditional wooden finish would make the closets the focal point of the room and enhance the décor of the room.

Unique footbridge by Dominique Perrault Architecture

Posted: 31 May 2011 07:20 AM PDT

Bridges are a great way of creating shortcuts. When there's a very crowded area and it's hard to get from one part to another, a bridge is a good solution. Suspended bridges are not an inconvenient for the traffic and they can easily get the people from one part to another in no time. There are bridges all over the world but there's no bridge like this one designed by Dominique Perrault Architecture.

The bridge is located in Madrid, Spain and it has a very modern look. It doesn't look very revolutionary but when you're actually using it the spiral shape looks hypnotizing. You won't even realize how fast you get to get from one part to another. Even if this bridge looks so futuristic and interesting, I'm having doubts about the safety of those using it. There are those holes from place to place that look dangerous, especially for little kids. Bu this is actually a false impression that you get when looking at the whole picture. Seen from up close, the bridge is actually very safe.

The bridge offers a great panorama over the city that you can admire while traversing the bridge. This might distract you from the long path. The design is over 250 meters long, subtly expanding in its diameter from 5 to 12 meters. It's a very beautiful bridge that seems to just float above the river.

SEESAW faucet

Posted: 31 May 2011 07:00 AM PDT

Faucets might not seem like a very interesting subject. They are basically a standard choice. People usually spend very little time choosing the faucet for their bathrooms and kitchens and this is a big mistake because basic and elementary fixtures are also important. Take this design for example. It's a revolutionary faucet because it introduces the concept of economy.

The SEESAW faucet was designed by Han Chanher and its main purpose is to minimize water wasting. It's called the SEESAW faucet because it uses the principle as the seesaw. This way, when the soap dispenser on one side is pushed down from the neutral position to release soap, the tap on the other side is raised and its flow is prevented. And this is how the up-and-down movement of the seesaw inspired this clever piece.

Not only that this faucet is very economical, but it also comes in a very attractive design. It's simple and modern and it would look stylish and beautiful in any bathroom. You can also use it in the kitchen where it might be even more efficient if you like hand-washing the dishes. It's a very interesting and reliable faucet design and it also has a catchy name. As you can see, sometimes inspiration comes from the most unexpected sources. I don't have any information bout the price for this faucet, but it should be reasonable.

London Champagne Flute from Wineware

Posted: 30 May 2011 08:22 PM PDT

When there is a special celebration like an anniversary, a wedding or even a special occasion, we drink champagne and feel in the mood for celebrating. But you can’t simply use any kind of glass for this special drink, so you should have some nice champagne glasses stored in the kitchen for special occasions. And even if you use these glasses only a few times a year, you still buy them and keep them as they add a plus of festivity to the celebration.

And these champagne glasses may have different sizes and shapes, but I prefer the flute shape to others because they look so fragile and nice. They are delicate and graceful, just like the drink poured into them. These nice London champagne flute glasses are made by Wineware, a big manufacturer and can be bought for the fair price of £36.46 a set of 6.The height of these glasses is perfect (265mm 10 3/8″) and o is the capacity (210ml 7 oz).

BESTÅ ÅDAL TV Unit from IKEA

Posted: 30 May 2011 08:01 PM PDT

TVs are almost compulsory in a home these days. And you cannot just have them without the need to have a stand to put them on. So when you buy a TV set the first thing you need to do is also buy a special piece of furniture for it like a TV stand or a small bookcase that you can use as a TV stand. Here is a very simple and nice TV stand from IKEA that comes for a really good price this week, as you can purchase it for just $99 instead of $130.

This stand can be used as a support for both a flat screen TV, but also for a traditional one, as it has the necessary width for that. As you can see from the photos this TV stand comes in a variety of colours – beech effect, black-brown, walnut effect and white, so you can choose the right one to match the design and colour of your living room. This piece of furniture is pretty simple but really useful, as it also has two drawers you can use for storing different things and two separate spaces below the TV that are perfect for your pocket books or your DVD collection. These two shelves offer more stability which is completed by the four short and square legs. The drawers come out smoothly and have a stopper that prevents them for coming out and keeps them in place.
