Ways to creatively hide storage space in the bathroom

Posted: 04 Feb 2011 11:33 AM PST

Bathroom is one of those areas of a home that shares the bad reputation of staying cluttered and messy. There is always so much to store in a bathroom but the bathroom is known to feature the least sum of storage space.

Whether you have sufficient storage space below the sink that's underutilized or your bathroom features a pedestal sink, there are efficient creative methods to store small and large items.   Explore the below mentioned tips to creatively hide storage space in the bathroom –

Open shelving – Open shelves is one of the best ways to create flexible storage space in the bathroom. You can install open shelves on both the sides of the sink for soaps and other regular use items. You may also install open shelves on the corner of the shower area, and you can use it, specifically for storage of items to be used during the bath. If there is a bathtub installed in the bathroom, the idle wall next to the tub can be used to create a vertical storage space. The bottom shelves can be used to store shampoo bottles, soap, etc and the top shelves can be used to store towels, linen, etc.

Underneath the sink storage space – if your bathroom features a sink installed on the top, find a plumber and the space underneath it being absolutely free then you have the exceptional opportunity to use the place under the sink to store things that you don't want the guest to see when they use the room.

Cabinet with the mirror – if your bathroom features limited wall space then the best way to create storage space is to install a cabinet above the sink with mirror faced door. This way you shall have the essential mirror installed and also a creative storage space.  In addition, as the cabinet is a closed one, it can be used to store varied sorts of miscellaneous items.

Hooks and hangers – Horizontal bars, hooks and hangers can be attached to the walls of the bathroom and can be used for hanging towels, clothes, hygiene kits, robes, etc. The most significant feature of hooks is that they can be installed anywhere in the bathroom, including the backside of the bathroom door. Hooks installed near the bathtub can be used to hang damp clothes or wet shower mats that need to be air dried.

Nothing is worse than buying furniture that looks great in the furniture shop and when you get home with it you realize that it does not fit your room right or it is the wrong size or maybe it does not match the other things in the house. It’s horrible and it generates zillions of bad thoughts and nerves. So the best thing to do is to purchase some kind of furniture that you can easily assemble and then disassemble (just in case) and adjust it according to your needs. This is the perfect furniture, as it gives you the liberty to makes adjustments both in the beginning and also on the way, if you simply get bored with the same picture over and over again and want to change something.

The String Pocket shelves give you this freedom and you can use them any way you want to or need to. They are sent to you in modules with three shelves that you can move up or down the lateral support, depending on the size of the things you intend to place there.

They are now produced by the Swedish company – String, but they were designed by Nisse Strinning back in the 1950s. They are available in seven colors and different sizes and you can purchase it only in Europe for 105 euro.

Useful Love Pot

Posted: 04 Feb 2011 11:26 AM PST

Valentine's Day is knocking at the door and you must prepare yourself with gifts for the person that you love most.

It is a special day so you must think of a special gift too. It must fit the person that you love and this event too. The gift that you choose must have one of the symbols or ingredients that show love or romanticism: red color, heart- shaped Cupid's image, a love declaration, a delicate rose, an intimate and sensitive scent.

The designer has a suggestion related to this event: a humidifier and aroma dispenser called "Love Pot". It has the shape of a flower pot and it is very useful too. The Love Pot does not use electricity and is ecological. It was designed for an act of charity for Nanum project. The profits are for educational scholarships, for needy children who are poor or have healthy problems.

How to Make Your Own Tile Table

Posted: 04 Feb 2011 10:47 AM PST

Furniture is not very cheap and you can’t always afford how to buy what you need, especially if you would like some special furniture for your garden, for the patio or for any outdoor location. But sometimes you might want to do things yourself and you can do that by using bits of other materials, so in the end you will have a very nice table that is hand made and the result of your work. A very good idea is to make your own tile table. When making it you can use either fragments of broken tiles that you can arrange in a puzzle together with pieces of colored glass or even whole tiles that you have left after you had your kitchen floor all tiled.

The first thing to do is choose the support for such a table. That means that you must look either for an old wooden table that you can cover after that with tile or for some old metallic one that would be perfect for your puzzle tile table. Then you should arrange the available pieces according to color and shape and decide on the design, I mean the pattern according to which the pieces will be arranged. Just place the pieces like in a puzzle after you have covered the support table with some kind of adhesive that is recommended for tiles.

Then wait for everything to be dried and glued together and polish it for a better look. If you do not have old tables to use, just use some plywood for the base. This can be an amazing idea, because this way you can cut the plywood to your own desire and you can make a tile table shaped like a flower or a star or whatever you might imagine. Another interesting idea might be to use whole tiles that you will place on the wooden frame. Just make sure you carve a small ditch that will be perfect for fixing the tiles. Any way, no matter what you choose from these ideas, the result can be amazing if only you have some eye for design and are willing to try. Good luck!

How do I design my small bedroom?

Posted: 04 Feb 2011 10:42 AM PST

A bedroom must reflect your personality. This is a space where you are most at ease and this room, whether small or big must meet your requirements. Simple ideas like light paints on walls, simple flooring, appropriate sized furniture and a more open design can make the room look roomier.  Stick to geometric, simple patterns for upholstery and fabrics.

A bedroom is a private space. This is the space where you can be most yourself and forget all inhibitions. This is why your bedroom must be a reflection of your personality. It can be challenging to design a small room, especially if you are the kind of person who likes to add too many small things to give character to your personal space. However, a bedroom is a place to relax and unwind and with some simple tips, you can definitely add your personal touch to your tiny room without making it look smaller.

Create an uncluttered look –

Your bedroom can look much tinnier if you have too much furniture in it. If you are an owner of a small bedroom, the first thing to understand is 'Less is more'. This basically means that lesser furniture and personal belongings leads to more open space. If you can't really see the outlines of your bedroom clearly, you have too much stuff. To create a bedroom decor that instantly relaxes you and draws the attention of a viewer away from the small space, you must have decent amount of floor space.

Buy appropriate sized furniture –

Most bedrooms are defined by the bed that dominates them. If you own a large king-sized bed, it may be time to go furniture shopping. Choose a more suitable bed; a queen sized bed might be ideal for your bedroom. Also, choose furniture that is proportionate to your bed. This means that chairs, night stands and chests should also be smaller as well. Opt for a contemporary design because these often have straight lines. While you may love classical furniture, having a bed in heavy solid wood with too much texture is not a smart move. In fact, choosing a bed that is light in colour is a great option.

Get creative with your storage –

Storage is important for any bedroom. Whether large or small, a bedroom needs to have sufficient space to hold all your treasured belongings. However, dedicating a complete wall to a closet may not be the smartest idea. Not only will the closet hog the entire wall, it will take up too much floor space as well, making your room look tinier. Instead, opt for a smaller closet, with more intelligent stacking options inside. Optimise your closet with well placed hooks for handbags and pull out stands for shoes. Get your carpenter to make these simple additions to your existing closet. Also, get mirrored closet shutters to give an appearance of a larger space. Buy a bed with pull out drawers. These come in very handy to store small knick knacks, out of season clothes and even books.

Use up more of the wall –

When you have a tiny bedroom, it is vital to open up the floor footprint. This means, you must get creative with using your walls more! Buy smart wrought iron shelves and place your books, makeup and CD's on these shelves. Instead of adding a chest of drawers, use these shelves to personalise your room. You can even get your carpenter to create an interesting shelving pattern and then place books, candles and decorative in a way to create smart storage as well as a focal point for the room.

Lighting –

Give extra attention to the lighting. By placing a spot light on the bed, you can create an illusion of a larger space. Hang a nice pendent light from the ceiling which throws maximum light on the bed itself. Also, choose to use only soft lighting in your bedroom. This will add a warm glow to the room and take attention away from the size of the room.

Use these simple, cost-effective methods to decorate even a tiny room to have a grand feel to it.

How to select the right ceiling fan?

Posted: 04 Feb 2011 07:52 AM PST

Ceiling fans are an integral part of the home décor. More and more people are now giving preference to install ceiling fans in lieu of central air conditioners. It is doubtless that this is a good decision. Ceiling fans are very much affordable and are also energy efficient. However, the benefits of ceiling fans can only be enjoyed when the right selection is done. Selection of the right ceiling fan is just not limited to the right style and color. There are several other factors that need to be considered.

Below is a list of factors to be considered in the selection of a ceiling fan –

1) First of all, you need to consider the size of the room so that the fan provides maximum efficiency. For rooms with area of 75 square feet or less, select 30 inch to 36 inch fan. 36 inches to 42 inches fans are ideal for rooms with area up to 144 square feet, and for larger rooms featuring area space above 144 square feet, select 50 inch to 54 inch fan.

2) The next factor to be considered is the height of the room. The optimal placement of ceiling fans is between 8 to 9 feet from the floor level. If the height of the room is less, then ceiling hugging fans should be selected and if the height is more, then ceiling fans with extended rod should be preferred.

3) The most vital factor of a ceiling fan is the motor. The motor is responsible for operation and air circulation. Prefer high quality motors with the sealed bearings and heavy duty windings. Ceiling fans with less and powerful and small motors are known to make a lot of noise and produce heat also.

4) Ceiling fans are available with different finishes. Enamel, wood and metal finishes are some common options. When choosing a finish, assure that it is resistant to fading and scratching. Brass finishes are the best selection as they are durable and thick.

5) Assure to check the warranty of the ceiling fan you choose to buy as different fans feature different warranty. Some of the fans even feature life time warranty and in home service.

Conclusively, try and purchase the ceiling fan from well known manufacturers and home stores only and avoid buying from local discount stores to prevent buying cheaply manufactured and over priced ceiling fans.
