Posted: 06 Nov 2010 06:37 AM PDT

In the kitchen, cupboard, counter and even in the air, every home shares its space with tiny invader creatures that are commonly addressed as pests. There is a myriad of pesticides and pest control methods available in the market, but these chemical compounds are known to be very harmful to you, your environment and the pests. Moreover, you also need to pay exorbitant charges to get them applied professionally. Thankfully, there are a lot of natural remedies for pest control and have been in use since countless years with great success.

Here are some non toxic and natural remedies for pest control –

1.The first natural line of defense is to protect oneself. Pests are known to invade those houses that are not clean, because there are a lot of places to hide, more food to find and eat. Some obvious daily actions are to keep the counters and floors free from crumbs, dispose the trash each evening and clean all areas where cooking or dining is done.

2.Take away the food supply because the pests are known to invade for food only. Merely storing the food in flimsy plastic bags closed with a clip or a rubber band is not enough. Keep all the food in closed containers or sturdy packages.

3.Besides not providing the pests with shelter or food, you may also deter few that are hunting. Various types of spices are known to be effective natural pest deterrents. Place loose bay leaves around the kitchen cabinets and even inside the jars. A dried chili pepper can also be placed to deter insects.

4.Cucumber peels are another example of natural pest control, especially for ants. Set out cucumber slices or peel as a natural non toxic deterrent to get rid of ants, bugs, flies, moths, mites, wasps and other insects.

5.There are certain essential oils also that can be effectively used as natural pest control. For instance, mice are repelled by peppermint essential oil. Mix 2 cups of water with peppermint oil and spray wherever you find mouse droppings. For restricting ants to from your counters, wipe the entire area with few drops of citronella or peppermint essential oil.

6.Another item that can be used to get rid of pests is boric acid. Place it on the cabinets and counters. Boric acid is non toxic in nature and shall keep away the pests.

The Ice Hotel in Sweden

Posted: 06 Nov 2010 03:57 AM PDT

We work work every day all through the year, dreaming for the day when we will go on holiday some place nice where to stay, relax, enjoy nice scenery and activities and preparing for the upcoming year of work. Most people go to exotic places that are very popular these days like the Caribbean or  Hawaii, but if you want to have an unforgettable experience in an unusual but amazing place, I suggest you visit the Ice Hotel in Sweden.

Situated 200 km north from the Arctic Circle, this hotel has a unique and incredible architecture, as it is made entirely of ice and snow. Everything in it is made of ice, including the beds, the pillars that support the archways inside the rooms, the bar, the glasses full of cocktails on the ice tables, the chairs and even the sculptures and other nice art pieces displayed inside the hotel. Even the “fireplace” is made of ice and, of course, there’s no fire inside.

There are the traditional influences of the natives who lived in igloos and covered the walls and beds with animal skins, but you can also see some modern influences in the ice sculptures and the different geometrical shapes carved in ice that embellish the rooms. It’s a fascinating place and you feel like stepping inside a story book, living and not reading “Snow Queen”.

Tapi or the portable water fountain

Posted: 06 Nov 2010 02:59 AM PDT

If you have children then you know that going out for a walk can be a real adventure and you can be forced to find solutions for the most unusual and unexpected problems. And the smaller they are the bigger the trouble. For example they are always thirsty and if they forgot their water bottle at home or simply finished it they will start screaming for some water. But what to do when there is no shop around and the only source of water is an old nasty looking public tap and there are no cups anywhere near you? This can be a serious problem, as kids don’t know how to sip water from your cupped hands. Well, fortunately, some smart guys from Dreamfarm have thought of this situation and invented Tapi.

Tapi is an original rubber device that can be easily attached to any tap and can be removed after using. It can be used as such or , if you squeeze its end, it will look like a water fountain and your kid will be able to drink that water that springs out of it on the side of the tap. It is small and easy to use and it’s cheap, too – only $5.95 if you order online. It does not change the water taste and can be washed in the dish washer without a problem. It is available in different colours and it’s fun, too.

What Kind of Flooring You Can Choose For Your Swimming Pool?

Posted: 06 Nov 2010 02:43 AM PDT

A swimming pool in the house is definitely an added advantage for the entire family.  It is a terrific way for enjoyment, relaxation, and workout and also increases the overall value of the house. Though construction of the swimming pool is an easy task but the flooring selection of the swimming pool should be given prime importance as the entire look of the swimming pool depends on the flooring. You will be delighted to know that there is an extensive range of flooring options available in the market with each flooring option possessing its own unique characteristics and imparting a distinct look.

The most common flooring option for the swimming pool is the tiles. The main reason behind its popularity is its resistance to wear and tear and fading. Tiles are available in a plethora of designs, colors, patterns and sizes, and thus you are allowed to mix and match the little squares to get your preferred look. Those who want a sober look, can select a single color tile and those who are looking for a stylish look, can select two or more colors and create a pattern. Nowadays, tiles with varied prints are also available.

Vinyl flooring is also a good choice. They may look like tiles but are cheaply priced than tiles and can be installed quickly. Vinyl flooring is easy to clean, impart a smooth finish, are durable and sturdy. In addition, it does not need a lot of scrubbings as that of tile flooring. It is highly flexible and hence less prone to cracks and scratches. The vinyl material is pre treated and thus protects the pool from algae, fungi, bacteria and UV rays.  They are available in a variety of designs, textures and patterns but the choice range is less than the range for tiles.

Fiberglass is also another attractive option for swimming pool.  Most people assume that fiberglass flooring is very expensive but the fact is that it may be expensive during the time of purchase, but it is highly cost effective in the long run as it is free from maintenance. Fiber glass is durable, strong, shall never fade and scratch. Due to its non porous surface, bacteria and algae are not allowed to breed and hence there is no maintenance. Moreover, fiberglass swimming pools are pre molded at the factory and arrive in a one shell.

Molecular Chair by Antonio Pio Saracino

Posted: 06 Nov 2010 02:37 AM PDT

When I started learning Chemistry in school I was absolutely fascinated by the way things were seen under the microscope, by the strange connection that kept molecules together, so that they could form things we use every day. The microscopic molecular structure of things was also the source of inspiration for a very talented Italian designer, Antonio Pio Saracino,  when he created the Molecular Chair.

This chair looks like it is made of bubbles of different colours, suggesting the way molecules are seen under the microscope. It is an original view on the world and things that surround us and it was really successful when it was displayed in a few contemporary art exhibitions around the world.

This chair actually has a metallic skeleton that is able to offer support for the coloured bubbles – molecules that are very soft and comfortable to sit on. It has different variations from the original model, so you can see a molecular chair, a molecular armchair and a molecular bench. Besides the unusual look of the chair made of molecules woven together, this designer also wants to promote the use of eco-friendly materials, as felt is a soft material that is low-tech and natural material that loves the environment.

I don’t think we can use these chairs to sit on, but they could definitely bring a modern look to your home, as they look crazy and beautiful at the same time for me.

Feng Shui Bedroom

Posted: 06 Nov 2010 01:49 AM PDT

Feng Shui is an oreiental phylosophy that has gained a lot of preactitioners all over the world lately. Its main idea is that your spirit and peace is mind is influenced by the way you place objects into your home. The bedroom is one of the most importat rooms in the house because it’s the room where you sleep and regain your force to work and think and face all the challenges of life. That is why the central piece of this room is the bed that must be comfortable and large enough to provide a good night sleep for you. Another Feng Shui piece of advice for your bedroom is to leave out any other objects that could disturb your inner piece and remind you in any way of your work or problems – like the TV set, computer, desk or any other similar object.

The last image that you see in front of your eyes will influence your sleep for the better or for the worse, depending on what it is. That is why a Feng Shui bedroom will never have the bed facing a door or the bathroom, but it will be more likely to be facing the window. But make sure there are no light sources from the light because this can disturb your sleep and you will wake up even more tired than you had went to bed.

The colour of the walls is very important, as chromo therapy has already been demonstrated scientifically. Feng Shui advice only confirms this one more time, so if you want peace and quiet of mind – paint your bedroom in blue, if you want longevity and s good health – use green, if you want sensuality and financial success – use red and so on.

Plants are welcomed into your bedroom as they bring a small part of nature into your home and this is always beneficial. But do not overcrowd the room with plants because it is not a botanical garden and they can take up all the oxygen and give you headaches.

Any way, these are just a few Feng Shui tips for your bedroom. For further information you should visit more specialized web sites.

iMac G4 desk lamp

Posted: 06 Nov 2010 01:02 AM PDT

If you know anything about computers or have used the computer for several years, then you certainly heard of iMacs, the computers that are produced by the guys from Apple. Well, there is a special model of iMac, iMac G4, that was the source of inspiration for some very innovative guys and they turned it into a … desk lamp. The idea started from the “nickname” of this computer that was iMac lamp. This nickname is due to its base that looks like a desk lamp shade, semi- spherical and with an Apple logo on.

Well, if you take this base from an iMac G4 you no longer use or which is broken and turn it into the upper part of a desk lamp, the shade to be more precise, and then attach a light bulb and a support that is connected to the wall plug, you will have the perfect gift for your friend who is an Apple fan or a computer geek or both.

Actually it’s not necessary to do all these things yourself, because now you can buy this unusual funny lamp from Etzy.com for only $25, $15 if you buy it together with another item. Not bad, isn’t it, considering the price of a brand new iMac ?
