Should You Go For Curtains Or Settle With Drapes

Posted: 03 Nov 2010 09:57 AM PDT

When it comes to treating and dressing the windows, you have a myriad of options and choices at your disposal. While having an extensive variety to select from is definitely great, but it is known to be confusing also. For instance, should you go for curtain or settle with drapes.

Drapes and curtains are the most common window dressing options and often are used interchangeably as most of the people are unable to differentiate between both of them. Though drapes and curtain may seem not to be very similar, but they are quite different from each other.

Here is a detailed comparison between the two to make you wise and help you make the right selection –

Drapes are nothing but heavy weight, floor length, lined fabrics hung on the rods with hooks for traversing. On the other hand, curtains are unlined, light weight fabrics of varying length attached to the rods with rings, tabs, grommets, or rod pocket casing.

If you want to incorporate rich fabrics in your room such as silk or velvet then you need to go for drapes, whereas curtains are best done in linen, cotton, sheer or lacy fabrics.

Drapes are always done in pleats and of floor length. American, French, etc is some of the popular pleating styles. Curtains may or may not bear the pleats, and their length varies with the size of the window. Generally, curtains for sliding glass doors are not pleated and those for French doors are pleated.

If you do not want any light to come in then you should go for drapes as they are made out of thick fabrics and are lined. Curtains are not lined and allow light to pass across them due to their light sheer fabric.

To decide on whether you should go for curtains or settle or with drapes, you need to consider your need, budget and the area where they are to be installed. If you have a restricted budget then you should go for curtains as drapes are much expensive than the curtains due to the heavy fabric and the quantity. Drapes demand professional installation but you can easily install curtains by yourself. Drapes are more suitable for large open spaces such as churches, mansions, manors, banquet halls, marriage halls, etc. And for offices, homes, studios and other small establishments, curtains are more appropriate.

Onda bathroom vanity by Bandini

Posted: 03 Nov 2010 06:10 AM PDT

Modern bathrooms are very simple and functional, but you can see the good taste from the distance. That is why there are a lot of talented designers who specialized in designing bathrrom interiors and bathroom vanities. It’s only natural to have the disire to take care of the bathroom , too, so it can look as well as the rest of the house. Let’s take a look at the wonderful work of Bandini in accomplishing one of its best collections called “Onda” and you will see my point.

It is simple, but at the same time so refined, that you forget for a moment that we are talking about bathroom vanities here. It is a colourful spot in a white world and it suggests joy – the joy to be young and alive. The whole collection is made is bent wood, so the material is absolutely natural, only being covered with a shiny and coloured layer for both protection and a nice look. The backlit mirror fits perfectly in this design and so do the orange, but transparent sinks.

The part of the vanity that is fixed to the wall, but also the small one on the floor is asymetrical, but has a nice round contour. Each piece of the furniture is nicely outlined by a black line on the edge and the entire collection looks soft and strong, reliable at the same time. Though a bit futuristic for some people, I love the originality and uniqueness of its style, the impulse it gives you to start a new day full of energy.

Space saving desk

Posted: 03 Nov 2010 05:25 AM PDT

When you are an adult you know exactly what to do and what is the utility for each thing in the house, every piece of furniture and you respect those rules, maintaining all the objects around in good condition. But this is mainly possible because adults have a static behaviour inside the house. They do not play or run about the house or throw fifty toys on the floor. That’s what kids do and that is why they need all the space they can get for different entertaining activities they perform after study. So, if you want to have some more space for your children’s spare time activities, try to do something with the desk they use for doing their homework, writing or colouring in their books.

I found the perfect solution for this problem : a set consisting of a desk and a chair that can be clicked one into another and this way obtaining a cube that you can use for other purposes or simply deposit easier in some remote place. This set is called  Pkolino Klick Desk and Chair Set and can be bought for $198 right here, in an online store. It was designed by Davide Cesca, a very innovative designer who thinks that we must combine creativity with usefullness and this way he got this idea of creating a chair that clicks into the desk, offering also some storing space inside for different materials, like the books for example

The chair and the desk are made of birch wood, which is a very light wood essesnce , perfect for kids furniture and you can choose from the three colours that are available: red, green and orange. The chair has a very soft pillow to offer maximum comfort when the kid sits there and is perfect in size for all the children between the age of 3 and 7.

100 square meter loft in São Paulo

Posted: 03 Nov 2010 05:06 AM PDT

Here is an 100 square meter loft in São Paulo, Brazil which was designed by Diego Revollo creating a harmony between comfort and modernity.

“The choice for just one kind of covering for the walls and the roof of the whole apartment provided more uniformity to the area, creating a single box. With the goal of reaching the balance between rustic and industrial characteristics and warm and comfortable sensation, burned cement was chosen as the main covering. A special resin was used in the effort to get more impermeability of the wet surfaces.

On the lower floor, the living room, dining room and kitchen have also been unified, once they don't have sheds or division, the dining table appears as a wooden board made of Pine setted in a kitchen workbench adding modernity to the materials. In the mezzanine, the elimination of any division between rooms bathrooms and the closet, was the solution chosen to provide wideness to the area. The low headboard designed by the office, with the two hanging bedside tables on both sides, accentuate the horizontality and helps providing much more amplitude. The composition of soft elements as the hanging board made of ebonized Sucupira in the bathroom that takes place of a normal cabinet, and the mirror setted on the roof with faces to both sides, contributed to reach the target.

The contemporaneity present in this project goes beyond of his structure, being also strongly presented in the ornamental elements. Each detail was specially thought to accentuate the characteristics of this kind of apartment remitting them to the sheds of New York.”
