Bodiam Castle in England

Posted: 04 Apr 2011 11:21 AM PDT

I admit I have always been fascinated by castles and all the Medieval stuff because of all the books I read as a child. But there is something really interesting about these buildings: they have resisted the passing of time, even 500 or 600 years and most houses nowadays don’t even resist a stronger wind and get blown away. Hm, it makes you wonder if they were the stupid ones or … we are.

Any way, I have found the portrayal of my dream castle by mistake, while searching something on the Internet. It is the Bodiam Castle and it drew my attention thanks to its amazing architecture.

Although nowadays only the exterior walls of the castle survived and the interior is mainly in ruins, this castle is a fine representative of the XIVth century architecture. That meant, of course, steady and solid buildings that were  constructed to protect the old citadels against their enemies. It is located near Robertsbridge in Sussex, England and was built in 1385. It was built there with the intention of stopping the French invaders and that explains the moat that surrounds the castle. the only way in is a drawing bridge, still functional nowadays. Of course, the castle is now only a historical place where students go together with their teachers to talk a bit about England’s Medieval history, but its amazing architecture still fascinates people like me and you.

Abali Gran Sultanato Hotel in Sicily – Italy

Posted: 04 Apr 2011 09:59 AM PDT

If you ever want to travel in the amazing world of the 1001 Arabian nights, you don’t necessarily have to go to the Arab world, but a lot closer, somewhere in Italy, in Sicily – Palermo to be more precise. I am talking about a very unusual, yet very famous hotel in Sicily that is well known for its special design that makes it very much similar with an Arabian house.

It is called the Abali Gran Sultanato Hotel and all the rooms in it are specially arranged so as to suggest an Arab atmosphere and to look like a harem.

Unlike the Western modern style which is minimalist and comfortable, but uses only two or three colours – generally dark, this hotel is a lot different. The oriental influence is visible here and all the rooms are arranged in very strong colours, with a lot of furniture and very large comfortable beds, usually with a drape hanging over it, just like in the old stories with Scheherazade. The rooms are a bit too “crowded ” for my taste, but those who like this style will be delighted to find a piece of the Sultans way so far in the west.

Designed by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby and produced by manufacturer Cappellini, this new sofa is not what you would expect from such a piece of furniture. The exposed framework, handcrafted from solid oak, is combined with the textile materials in a very unusual way.

This sofa actually incorporates a large number of different colored quilts which not only that they create a very comfortable place so sit on, but also create a very sophisticated and artistic look. It's a fun and interesting sofa that would cheer up the atmosphere in any kind of home. It also has another advantage: because it's made from so many different quilts, you can alternate them anytime you want. This way you'll never get bored of your sofa and you would also have the possibility to easily change the atmosphere in your room. A very fun piece that would nicely integrate in a more modern home.

“Ec-O” Outdoor Bench by Steven Ma

Natural resources are not endless that is why we should take care of them if we want a better and normal life. They assure us the daily living and for all the other generations and thus we are responsible for their keeping.

Steven Ma is a designer who probably had all these ideas in mind and designed an "ec-O" street bench. It has the shape of a ring, with a futuristic design and made of a recycled material, bio- aluminum. The street will look full of color, light and with an elegant design if it gets such beautiful outdoor benches.

They will embellish the outdoor spaces as they are filled with plants and generate light. They consist of a water collector and filter for plants and some solar films which generate electricity to produce light. These ec-O benches are perfect for our world which needs so much protection and things that cannot hurt it anymore.
