DIY cork containers

There are lots of beautiful decorations that you can make with simple and inexpensive materials. Today's star is cork. You can use this material to make some very lovely and simple vases or containers and they will add texture to your décor and bring out the beauty of anything you choose to display in them. For this project you'll need some cans, spray paint, a roll of cork, some heavy duty craft glue, scissors, a ruler and pins of clothespins.

Start by washing the cans. You can use soup or vegetable cans that are very easy to find and that anyone has and uses in the kitchen. Peel off their labels and clean the sticky areas. After they are all dry, start painting the inside of each can. When you're done continue with the exterior. You can use any color you want. After the paint is completely dry, roll out the cork and place the bottom of the can at the end of the roll. Mark the width of the can with a pencil and create a long straight line using the ruler.

You can either choose to wrap the can a single time or to wrap the cork around it twice so that you can easily stick the pins in it. At one end of the cork roll, place a thick bead of heavy duty craft glue and then just begin rolling the can adding more glue as you go. Add another thick bead of blue at the other end and secure it with pins until it's dry. After that your containers are ready to be filled with flowers, pencils or anything else you want. Melbourne Dream Contemporary Home by dKO Architecture

The A-G House is a very beautiful contemporary residence located in Melbourne, Australia. It's a single-storey structure that takes the classic design to another level. The house was a project by dKO Architecture and it was completed in 2011. It was a 450 square meter project and it came out simple but very beautiful. It's a reinterpretation of the classic mid-century California Modern design that was transformed and turned into the perfect home for a three generational family.

When you build something for a large family with more than one or even two generations, it's difficult to find a design that works for everyone. In this case, the key was simplicity. The house is minimalist and modern and it serves perfectly everyone's needs. This means that it successfully fulfills the main requirement that the client had. Since there are three generations living under the same roof, the house had to be large and to also have multiple volumes so that privacy can be achieved.

The A-G House has three wings and they are all connected via a spine. Not only that the design itself was reinvented, but the whole project has a twist. The backyard was actually reoriented towards the front of the house thus creating a central area that merges with the indoors. Overall, the house has clean lines and a geometrical design combined with a simple interior décor, a neutral color palette and very stylish details. The custom furniture not only reflects the owner's personality but also creates a visual continuity throughout the house.

Clean apartment in a beautiful old building with a modern twist

For a single couple, a 2-room apartment is just what they need. It's not overly small and it's enough room in there to even receive some guests. This particular apartment is located in Vasastan, Sweden. It's situated in a very beautiful century-old building with wonderfully preserved details. Most of the original features are still a part of the design and this apartment has a unique charm with a modern twist.

It's a two-room apartment with spacious rooms and airy spaces. It has white walls and ceilings throughout and this makes it seem not only larger but also fresh and airy. The wooden floors have a light finish and they're covered with carpet for protection but also for a more inviting and cozy look. Anyone who enters this apartment gets a very pleasant feeling. It covers an area of 64 square meters so it's quite small but it compensates with its bright and airy décor.

The apartment has three large windows that let in plenty of natural light. It sits on the 1.5 floor of the building and it's currently on the market for 3.8 million SEK. The interior is simple but charming. The apartment has been partially renovated in May 2012 and it currently features a lovely mixture of old and new elements. There are lots of original features that have been preserved but there's an overall contemporary and casual atmosphere.{found on site}.

Traditional pattern but with a contemporary feel

At first, when you look at this structure is unclear whether it's a private home or something else. It's a feeling mostly given by the exterior aspect of the house. This is the Beam House, a contemporary residence located in Arbel, in northern Israel. It's a very impressive structure both by its size and overall design. The first thing that catches someone's attention when looking at the whole complex is the beautifully curvature of one of the volumes and the way all these apparently separate structure combine to form a beautiful composition.

The house was a project by Tel Aviv-based studio Uri Cohen Architects. It was completed in 2010 and it covers an area of 1,930 square feet. It's a contemporary structure that was requested by a client who wanted to build his house next to already existing farm. He wanted this home to follow the traditional pattern but in its own modern way. The architects came up with a design that combines some of the features typical to the agriculture buildings from the area with the beams of a country home, all this with a contemporary twist.

The Beam House has been designed with three parallel volumes. They each have a different function. One is for private areas, one for semi-private spaces and the last one for public zones. The southern part is for private areas and it's enclosed in concrete walls. The other two volumes, the public and the semi-public or semi-private structures are separated by a thick wall that contains elements such as the air conditioning system, the storage spaces, the toilets, etc. The whole design of the house is very well organized. The public volume has a glass façade that creates a strong connection between the interior and exterior spaces. Overall, this is a very interesting reinterpretation of a classical design.

Ingenious work table with vintage dictionary top

They say that you can learn how to be more elevated and cultured by reading a dictionary or by learning one new word each day. It's definitely a useful tip and someone thought of a way to take that advice and add a creative spin to it. It's how this original work table was created. It's a DIY project that's very easy to replicate.

The main idea was to take an old table top and add an original twist to it. It can be a table top from a desk, table or anything else or it can simply be a table. The first step was to paint the table base a dark charcoal gray. After that part was done, it was time to take care of the table top. In order to transform it, you'll need mod podge, decorative papers, polyurethane, flat bar steel, a cobalt drill bit for metal, galvanized lag bolts and washers, a wood drill bit and a hack saw.

Start by washing the surface of the table top with soap and water and let it dry. Then decide on the design. In this case, pages from an old dictionary were used to cover the surface of the table. You can use some pages from your favorite book or even some pictures, kid's drawings, maps or anything else you want. After you're satisfied with your design, apply mod podge to the table surface and to the back of the paper.Lay the paper on the table surface and apply more Mod Podge on top as well.

Wait for the pages to dry and then apply the polyurethane finish. Apply a few cats and make sure you let each one dry for a few hours. Then cut and drill the steel edge pieces and attach them to the table. Now you have a personalized piece of furniture that will last for many years to come.{found on prettyhandygirl}.

Elegant Mamilla Hotel in Jerusalem by Safdie Architects

The Mamilla Hotel is located in Jerusalem, Israel. It sits in the Jerusalem, Israel district from where it also got its name. This is an area that connects the Israeli and Jordanian sectors of Jerusalem, it's a sort of transition area between the old and the new cities. Given this situation, the hotel had to be a reflection of that particular area and everything related to it. The Mamilla Hotel was a project developed by Safdie Architects.

Even though the hotel was completed in 2009, it seems to have always been a part of the district. It's because its façade integrates perfectly in the area. It has a historic look, just like the other buildings surrounding it and it's that kind of old with a fresh touch. It's like the building was there forever but only recently it has been restored to its original beauty. The hotel was designed for Alrov Luxury Hotels and the total cost of the project was US $60 million.

The façade and the exterior of the hotel might seem old and historic, but the interior gradually makes the transition towards modern and contemporary. The interior design was created by Piero Lissoni and it's the perfect image of the district's history and concept. It's modern but not overly striking. It's very elegant but in a simple way. The walls are covered with traditional Jerusalem limestone and the roofs are terra-cotta tile, thus creating continuity with the surrounding building. The contemporary Fluidity dish rack

The dish rack is a must-have in every kitchen. It's a very simple and very practical item and there aren't many variations in terms of design. It's exactly this monotony that was starting to become obvious that inspired Milan based design studio DesignLibero to create something different, something out of the ordinary.

This is Fluidity. It's an unconventional dish rack with a very simple but also very ingenious design. The main idea behind this design was to take the classic and add a modern twist to it. Fluidity is a dish rack and a planter. It serves a double function and they both work harmoniously together. This dish drying rack has a minimalist design and, in addition to the obvious features, it also has two small planters, one on each side. The interesting thing about it is that the plants actually take their water from the dishes.

The water dripping from the dishes collects underneath and automatically reaches the plants. This is possible because of the design and the slightly twisted shape of this piece. The water that trickles from the washed dishes as it's supposed to is then used to irrigate the plants. It's a very simple but very original idea and a way of adding some freshness to the kitchen. This piece has two small containers, each perforated at the bottom and they are filled with clay pellets and coconut fiber to keep clean and dish drainer but to also control the water environment of the plants.
