Mole Hill Housing, the Green housing design, designed by Hotson Bakker Architect. Located in Vancouver, BC, Kanada.
The Mole Hill Housing block, situated in the middle of one of the highest density neighborhoods and hottest housing markets in North America, had been under the threat of demolition for more than 50 years. Hotson Bakker Boniface Haden, in conjunction with S.R. McEwen Associated Architects, transformed the 26 city owned heritage homes into affordable housing, while maintaining the historic nature of the buildings on the site.

The interior and exterior heritage features of the houses were carefully preserved at each stage of the renovation. At the same time, each of the homes was adapted to incorporate advanced green building techniques and energy-ef?cient features, including a geothermal heating system. These techniques help save energy and enhance long-term affordability. One of the most signi?cant aspects of this project is its unique public laneways characterized by shared community gardens. Today, Mole Hill provides 170 units of subsidized and market rental housing for low-income singles, families, seniors and long-time residents.

Private Residence Design, Modern Home designed by Hotson Bakker Architect. Located in Vancouver, BC, Kanada. This private residence is an intended contradiction of dynamism and repose. The combination of steel and concrete offset with open, airy spaces creates a unique residence with a distinct Pacific Northwest feel. The home is characterized by many environmental features such as passive solar design, a clerestorey venting system and use of local materials. The site is a 100' x 140' corner lot in Vancouver's west side. The intention of the house was to create a combination of dynamism and repose. This combination was created by the tension between complex tectonic elements (acting as shelter) engaged with very simple, expressively quiet volumes (acting as spaces for inhabitation). From the north, a large metal carapiece roof cradles the main volume of the house, which in turn opens up to the views to the south-west.
