[OntarioCaliforniaFreecycle] File - Freecycle Rules Revised May 2012

FREECYCLE RULES -

The following letter has some clarifications in the Freecycle rules for our group: Ontario California Freecycle

Please review it and note changes in the rules for pets and yard sales.

1) NO POLITICS, NO SPAM, NO PERSONAL ATTACKS - NO EXCEPTIONS!!!
If you have a problem or question, please address it to:
OntarioCaliforniaFreecycle-owner@yahoogroups.com

2) DO NOT USE CAPITAL LETTERS IN THE MESSAGE AREA - in internet
etiquette dictates that this is considered yelling.

3) USE APPROPRIATE SUBJECT LINES, such as:

OFFER: (for items you'd like to give away) (city)
WANTED: (for items you're seeking) (city)
TAKEN: (for items you've offered once they've been claimed)city)
FOUND: (for items you were seeking but have since been offered)(City)
ADMIN: (for announcements from list moderators only)

*We request that you put the city in all subject lines. This helps everyone to identify an item that was listed and is now taken. We also want everyone to get in the habit of putting the city in the subject line so you don't have to remember which subject lines have a city and which don't. After you have submitted a number of posts in the correct format, your emails will go straight through to the list, so it's worthwhile to keep it simple.

A limit of 3 "want" posts for every 1 "offer" posted to the group.

Please note the item you're offering/seeking in both the subject line and the body of the email (don't forget to note your city as well - abbreviations are fine).

DO NOT USE ZIP CODES as not everyone knows the zip codes for the different areas. Because spammers commonly use Zip Codes instead of city names, any zip code wihout the city name will not get through for moderation.

If an item you've offered has been claimed, please post an update to the list immediately, using the subject heading TAKEN. You may want to keep a list of other people who have requested the item in case the original person it was promised to doesn't show up. This saves having to re post the item.

If someone offers you an item you'd previously requested in a WANTED post, please post an update to the list immediately using the subject heading FOUND.

3) KEEP IT COMPLETELY FREE and LEGAL.

No monetary transactions.

4) RESPONSES TO GROUP MESSAGE POSTS ARE SENT ONLY TO THE ORIGINAL
POSTER, NOT TO THE ENTIRE LIST.
This helps limit the number of messages you'll receive from the list. If
you'd like to get in touch with someone who has posted, to either request an item they've offered or to offer up something they've requested, simply reply to them directly

5) PICK UP/DELIVERY.

Arrange as you like. If someone from a charitable organization responds, though, you may consider giving them priority if you wish. You may also choose to decline responses from resellers if you prefer

As hard as it may be to believe, Freecycle offerers are often inconvenienced by responders who either don't pick up items when they say they will or who never show up at all. You may want to arrange a very specific time frame for pick ups and let the responder know that you will offer the item to other responders if they do not pick up on time or arrange an alternate time.

We also recommend you put the responder's name in the TAKEN or RECEIVED e mail. This lets people know who are active participants are in the process and whether a few people are taking up all the resources.

ex: subject line: TAKEN: large screen TV (Upland)

body of message: the large screen tv has been picked up by John Doe of Upland.

6) FREECYCLE MAY BE USED TO FIND HOMES FOR PETS. We have changed this because some of our local shelters are not "no kill". We just suggest you be careful and have complete confidence in the person you give the animal to. WE STILL DO NOT ALLOW FREECYCLE TO BE USED TO FIND PETS. Local shelters and Petsmarts have pet give away services.

7) MULTIPLE POSTS - When posting multiple items, we require that three or more OFFERS OR WANTEDS be posted on one e mail. This is not necessarily the case for TAKENS since they may be taken at a different time. This also cuts down on the number of posts members receive and they appreciate your respect for their space.

8) This list is not intended to be a personal eBay or Craig's List
inventory generator. If you are responding to a person's OFFER and
you intend to sell the item for profit, you need to disclose that
you intend to resell the item when you are requesting the item.
There are many offerers who could care less about who gets their
items and if it is sold once it is out of their hands, but others
may have a harder time offering items if they are being used for
profit. The number of interested members may also play a role in an
offerer's decision to give an item to a reseller. If the only
responder is a reseller, it is the offerers decision as to gift or
not to gift.

9) DO NOT USE FREECYCLE TO ADVERTISE YARD SALES. You are welcome to advertise your yard sale through a companion list called "CheapCycle".

If you wish to give items away after a yard sale, then go ahead and post the listing as one listing and let people know if you need it picked up ASAP because it is the remains from a yard sale.

ANYONE FOUND IN VIOLATION OF THE ABOVE RULEs MAY BE REMOVED FROM THE
GROUP AT THE MODERATORS' DISCRETION.

P.S. About the capital letters in the files that are sent out to members. While capital letters are considering "yelling" in internet lingo. The capital letters in the files sent out are intended to emphasize the specific word(s).
Because there is no font, or preference in Yahoo to allow us to bold
or underline a word, the original owner chose to capitalize them to,
hopefully, make them stand out. Just in case anyone else was wondering.
