Prototype split-level residence by Andreas KARL Architecture Posted: 02 Aug 2012 10:18 AM PDT Split-level houses are great alternatives for areas with strict building regulations. They allow the site and shape of the lot to remain intact and they can even provide advantages that other regular types of houses can't. For example, this split-level residence is a wonderful single-family residence. The house is located in Stocking, Austria and it was built in 2007 by Andreas KARL Architecture. It's a four-story structure and it's situated in an area with strict building regulations that posed some problems to the architects at the beginning. They also had to face some very specific requirements from the client. After analyzing these facts, the logical conclusion seemed to be a split-level design. This way the sloping site wouldn't be a problem anymore and the client would also get a positive response to his requests for direct ground level access to the main entrance and to the garden entrance from the north side.
The house is a prototype. It's a four-level residence with a high pitched roof. It's a monolithic structure with simple, clean lines. The exterior of the house is grey and the main entrance, the terraces and the windows feature golden anodized aluminum. The house is divided into four areas. There are the living areas, the sleeping areas and the garden. The total building area is 270 square meters and the site measures a total of 1000 square meters.{found on architezer}. A colorful bright renovation by Tobi Fairley Posted: 02 Aug 2012 09:49 AM PDT This lovely house is located in Monticello, Arkansas. It's a traditional house that was recently renovation by interior designer Tobi Fairley. The owners wanted to modernize their residence but they didn't want a drastic change. They still wanted to be able to recognize the original charm of the house and to preserve most of the details. The main idea was to keep the old furniture but to change the background. The designer decided to do that with the use of color. The whole house was redecorated. The color palette includes many different shades but, even though there are many colors involved, the result is very harmonious. The living room, for example, features as main colors shades of pink and green. These are contrasting tones and they are usually difficult to match with anything else. This area also has accents of blue and brown. The walls are pale blue, the curtains the sofa and the coffee table are pink while the armchairs and side tables are a combination of green and brown.
The bedrooms are also very colorful. One of them is almost entirely turquoise with white and brown accents and the other one features the same color combinations as the living room: green, pink and blue. The furniture has been preserved and there are a lot of antiques that were refinishes. Some new pieces were also added to update the décor. Modern Bromont House by Paul Bernier Architect Posted: 02 Aug 2012 03:33 AM PDT The Bromont House is a stylish family residence located in Quebec, Canada. The house was a project by Montreal-based design studio Paul Bernier Architect. It was completed in 2012 and it benefits from a very beautiful location, surrounded by trees and rich vegetation.Given the fact that the site presented such beautiful landscape, the architects tried to create a smooth and seamless transition between the indoor and outdoor spaces so that the connection with nature would be strong. It has panoramic views of the forest and the trees provide shade. The Appalachian Mountains are also visible in the distance from the site but only in winter when the trees lose their leaves. The Bromont House is a week-end retreat and it was designed as a serene space, always filled with natural light. As for the interior, the architects and the clients, a couple that lives in Montreal, decided that it would be best to opt for a timeless look with contemporary influences.
The house is organized into two volumes. One is a day volume while the other is the night volume. The day block is a U-shapes structure and it contains the living spaces, the kitchen the dining room and a reading nook. The night volume contains the master bedroom and it's a two-storey block. Overall, this is a beautifully organized and balanced residence that really is a very serene and pleasant getaway destination. The Ingenious Gourmet Tea shop Posted: 02 Aug 2012 01:28 AM PDT The Gourmet Tea is a tea shop that seems to appear out of nowhere. In reality it's just hidden behind a series of colorful panels. The idea is very clever and ingenious. It's a design inspired by the popular food trucks and their way of opening up revealing space you didn't think existed. This type of flexible design and space was the main inspiration for the shop. The shop is located in Sao Paolo and it's a tiny space. Three fourths of the space is occupied by the products. They just pop out of nowhere and they invade the shop. The panels are pulled out or they simply open like doors, revealing lots and lots of storage space, shelves and other elements. The middle area contains the counter space and it opens just like the food trucks. The rest of the panels are pulled out.
Not only that this apparently monolithic structured has a lot of secrets hidden inside it, but it also has an eye-catching design. The exterior is divided into several geometrical shapes/panels and they feature different colors combined randomly. There's no order or system. It's like a puzzle and everything fits perfectly. Given the attractive look of the shop, it's a great way of attracting looks and thus customers. It's also a way of making the shop easily-recognizable and popular. 6 Alternative Ways To Use Tablecloths Posted: 01 Aug 2012 11:48 PM PDT I am all about re-inventing everyday items so they become more useful than at first glance. I love a good twofer (ie: buy one thing, use it at least two different ways). Take a tablecloth for example. Obviously there are more ways to use these big, small, round, square, plastic and fabric pieces for more than just catching crumbs at your next big dinner party or afternoon tea with the girls. Get creative! Learn how to use tablecloths in more ways than one! Take a look at our list of alternatives and figure out what your next project will be. 1. Use it as a bed overlay. Genius idea right? When you have funky, sheer or vintage, crocheted tablecloth it can easily double as a bed’s overlay. It adds a dash of brilliance to your bedspread and it’s better than spilling spaghetti and meatballs on something so beautiful!
2. Use them as curtains. So maybe you can’t find curtains you love, but a tablecloth that makes you drool? Well, relax because tablecloths can easily be turned into curtains. With a simple little nip and tuck you’ve got a pair of, practically, custom made dressing for your windows! 3. Use it as an outdoor canopy. Those plastic or weatherproof tablecloths can really come in handy. Take an older piece and use it outside on your “makeshift” patio. Give yourself some shade in a whimsical, more stylish way. 4. Use it on a pillow. Tablecloths make pillow making easier. Find a simple DIY or if you’re handy enough then have it. Older tablecloths or ones you find on sale are great to snatch up and use later for crafty DIY project, especially for making pillows … and better yet …. outdoor, weatherproof pillows! 5. Use it as a headboard. Grab your prettiest and most favorite fabric tablecloth. Now go lay it over your headboard. Bam! Instant style and new design. Using a fabric tablecloth to cover up a plain headboard will instantly change the feel of your bedroom. It’ll add personality and just make things more fashionable! 6. Use it as a piece of wall art or tapestry. Do you have an amazing, ornate vintage tablecloth or one that’s just extremely intricate and too amazing to eat off of? Well then, give it to your wall! You can either frame the piece and use it as wall art or hang it from the ceiling to create a new, magical tapestry. The City Circus hostel from Athens Posted: 01 Aug 2012 08:00 PM PDT City Circus is a hostel from Athens, Greece that was once known for accommodating students coming on holidays. Since then it changed it profile and now addresses to a different kind of clientele, with more refined tastes. The hostel now addresses to adventurous travelers in search for a cozy place to spend their holidays and vacations. Architecturally-speaking, it's not as imposing and eye-catching as expected. It features a pale yellow exterior and it was originally a 100-year old mansion. It was converted into a hotel, restored and restructured. It offers 25 rooms on four levels. Because it was such as old and valuable building, most of the original architectural details were preserved, as a testimony to its rich history.
These details include elements such as the frescoed ceilings from the dining area and lounge as well as the iron balconies and baroque tiles. Even though it doesn't offer the highest standards in terms of quality and luxury, the City Circus hostel pays great attention to details and tried to make its guests feel as comfortable as possible. Overall, it has a minimalist interior design. The room feature bright green blankets, baroque mirrors, reclaimed and vintage furniture and beautiful artwork. It's a modest destination but an inviting and friendly place to spend the holidays.
