Echo Desk

Home furniture has to be available in a great variety. You might think it already is but you can't be more wrong. Each individual has its own taste in fashion, furniture, food and so on. To please everyone there should be more design ideas than people. Let's take this desk for instance. How many of you like it? It is functional thanks to those large storage spaces and it looks modern due to the process of manufacturing and materials used in that process.

White is everywhere and it's a sign of modernism. Neutral colors make things easier to blend into an environment but also make things disposable and people don't attach now as much from their furniture as the used to. Cheap materials make possible more and more pieces to appear and as a consequence their life expectance drops really fast.

I can't see this particular desk in other place than in young person's house. It was designed with this image in mind: always on the run, with no interest on the essence hidden in any object that surrounds us. Small apartments could use this desk because you can check your e-mails and be in touch with our friends or listen to your music, you can work on it and if your are studying or just graduated and you're on your new job it has places for books, files folders and your briefcase. Is all about functionality, a thing done perfectly, but it's a little simple and boxy for me; it doesn't catch my attention as soon as I enter the room.Available for 320 euros.

Small home makeover with a white décor

Posted: 10 Aug 2012 07:28 AM PDT

This small home had a pretty old and outdated interior. As a result, its owners decided to give it a makeover. Given the fact that the dimensions of the rooms were small and that they also wanted their home to become brighter and more airy, they decided to just use white as a main color. IT might not be a particularly modern shade but it's perfect when you want to make your home seem bigger.

The renovation was completed in 4 weeks. In this time, the owners and the designer that helped them achieve this fresh new look for their home had to make some serious changes. For example, they really wanted to brighten up the rooms so they decided to cover up the exposed wood joinery for a continuous and coherent look. They also removed the carpets and exposed the beautiful wooden floors. They add warmth to the space and also create a classic and chic contrast with the white walls.

Then it was time to furnish the place. Since the owners wanted an update but not a very dramatic change, they opted for items such as a mid-century dining set and several other vintage pieces. They mixed colors to create a dynamic and vibrant look. They also used bold prints to create focal points and to allow each room to have something that makes it stand out.{found on designsponge}.

Totem Bookcase

Posted: 10 Aug 2012 06:10 AM PDT

When I was in college i lived together with my other five colleagues in one room. So there were five beds and five closets there. And everything we needed to bring in the room had to be carefully weighed, to see if it really was necessary because we needed all the space we could get. That is why we all dealt with the space problem in our way, trying to find new ways of storing things in as little space as possible. This is when I discovered I could use the vertical line of the room, since the horizontal one was already too busy. Totem Bookcase seems now just the thing we were looking for some twelve years ago.

The name of this unusual bookcase comes from the Totem poles the Amerindians have in the middle of their tribes, cherished and respected, being the guide and supervisor, the representative of the gods in the tribe. Any way, the bookcase is rather tall and slim, looking like the perfect totem and also the perfect place for storing small books or even CDs or DVDs. It is made of powder-coated steel that is afterwards painted in black or white. There is a weighed base that makes the bookcase more stable and the price for the item is $449.

A creative new look for a tiny kitchen

Posted: 10 Aug 2012 04:48 AM PDT

Just because you have a small kitchen it doesn't necessarily mean you can't find a practical way of organizing it. People do it all the time. For example, this tiny kitchen just got an inspiring makeover. The owners worked with Kristin of The Hunted Interior and together they came up with a perfect new look for the kitchen.

The renovation was completed in just one week and the cost was under $100. It doesn't really get any better than this. Since they had a pretty small budget, the owners decided to work with what they had and to make the best out of the situation. Still, they managed to make some major changes. For example, they painted a full chalkboard wall and this drastically changed the whole décor. They did this because they wanted a more modern look for their kitchen and they also wanted this space to be practical and functional. The chalkboard wall allows them to write messages, to make shopping lists and to use it to make the space friendlier.

Some other changes include the fact that the upper cabinetry was painted white. The owners also added simple metal L braces for a campaign-inspired look. The new hardware allowed them to give the furniture a custom look at a very small price. The kitchen also got a new pendant lamp and this became their new accent piece.

DIY tree swing

Posted: 10 Aug 2012 03:20 AM PDT

Swings are something both children and adults enjoy. So if you have a big tree in your garden or yard, use it wisely. You can easily make a swing for your kids and you can enjoy it as well if it's sturdy and resistant enough. It would make a fun DIY project for the whole family. Here's what you'll need: one 2x4x8 piece of wood for the seat, one 1x2x8 piece of wood for the top and rope long enough to hang from your branch and strong enough to support adult weight. You'll also need wood glue, 2 clamps, a drill, 8 wood screws, sandpaper and paint.

Start by cutting the 2x4x8 piece of wood into two parts measuring 2.5' long. Then cut another two pieces, this time measuring 8'' long. Glue the two longer pieces together and then the shorter ones to the ends. Clamp and put heavy objects on top of them. When it's dry, pre-drill screw holes in each of the four corners of the short pieces. Also drill two holes in the outer corners of each end. Now you can sand and paint the wood if you want to.

Next, cut two lengths of rope measuring 5' long and attach them to the seat. Tie a double knot at one end and on the other end as well. Repeat the process for the other side of the seat as well. Then cut the rest of the rope in half. Create a loop and attach it to the swing with one of the chain quick links. Do the same for the other side. Now cut the 1x2x8 pieces and make them 2.5' long. Drill a hole in each end and, about 5' above the seat, tie a knot in each rope. Slip the loose end through the tope and tie the ends to the tree branch.{found on abeautifulmess}.

The Technivorm Grand Coffee Maker aka the Moccamaster

Posted: 10 Aug 2012 02:55 AM PDT

Prepare to taste the best coffee flavor you can get with the new Technivorm Grand Coffee Maker. Available at the price of $370, this beauty will provide you with the best coffee you have ever tasted, right there in the comfort of your home. After all, it didn't get the nickname Moccamaster, also written on it, for nothing.

This amazing coffee maker is not a revolutionary creation in terms of technological improvements. It's a model that uses the technology we already have in a new way. We could say that it makes the best out of what we know without feeling the need for new improvements on that level. So let's analyze it a little. The Moccamaster appears to be used a copper heating element that helps it keep the water temperature between 195º and 205º. This allows it to ensure the best possible flavor.

Of course, the user further benefits from more than that. The coffee maker also features an insulated steel container with a capacity of 64 oz. this container keeps the coffee nice and hot even after it's done and allows you to enjoy the same taste even for your second cup. This eliminates the need to either reheat the coffee or to keep the coffee maker running for periods of time longer than required for preparing the coffee. Moccamaster also features a 9-hole spray arm for an even soak and it can brew you a perfect pot of coffee in just 8 minutes.Available for 374 euros.

The Coffee Fellow Bean Bag by Johanna Hansson

Posted: 10 Aug 2012 02:03 AM PDT

Bean bags are exceptionally cozy and comfortable and they are wonderful pieces to be sued in homes with a casual interior design. They have the ability to adapt to the shape and conformation of the suer's body and to provide a perfect position for him. Bean bags also tend to have a vintage look, even if their design is actually modern or contemporary.

We have also seen coffee bean sacks to be reused with several occasions. They also have a unique vintage charm. So when you combine coffee bean sacks with the design of a bean bag you get a one-of-a-kind, extremely comfortable piece of furniture for your home. In other words, you get the Coffee Fellow. Designed by Johanna Hansson, the Coffee Fellow is part of the Fellow Collection. It's a jute bean bag that has a very interesting story behind it.

The Coffee Fellow was made from eight recycled coffee bean sacks. Their original prints and unique texture made them perfect for the look the designer wanted to achieve. The sacks were originally used on coffee plantations around the world and they all have individual looks. Their actual design depends on which coffee beans are most popular in Stockholm at the moment that they are produced. Extremely comfortable and with a unique look and a retro-chic charm, the Coffee Fellow is perfect for almost any type of interior décor.

4 tips for a cleverly-organized entryway space

Posted: 10 Aug 2012 01:29 AM PDT

The entryway is the space that anyone who comes in your home sees at first. It's why you should try to make it as pleasant and inviting as possible, so that you could create a favorable first impression. If not, it could seriously damage the overall image that a guest has about your home, even if the rest of the house is beautifully decorated. There are some simple things that you can do to make the best out of your entryway.

1. Built-in storage.

This is more of a structural and functional concern than a decorative idea. Built-in storage would work great in a small such as this one. It helps you maintain the area clean, organized and clutter-free by providing plenty of space for everything that needs to be put away. A system of hooks would be a great start and then you can continue on the same line.

2. Organized storage.

Only building a storage space is not enough to have a clean and organized home. You also need to be careful when designing this space. It needs to provide storage space for a variety of items, from coats to hats, shoes and bags. So make sure you include more than one type of compartment. It would be great to have hooks, drawers and storage baskets. Maybe a mudroom would be a wise idea as well.

3. Beautiful staircases.

If you have a beautiful staircase in your home, then you should take advantage of this fact. Make the staircase the star of your entryway. Allow it to shine by lamps shedding warm light on them. Show off the most beautiful features of your entryway. This may include elements such as the staircase that we have already discussed, a decorative unit with lots of interesting things to display or a colorful accent piece.

4. Cozy reading nook.

Since the entryway space is not suitable to be used as anything practical because of its exposure and small dimensions, a reading nook might be a great idea. You can place it near the staircase, in a corner. The space from under the staircase could be used as well. Maybe you can have some bookshelves in there. The whole idea is to take advantage of every inch you have and to not let anything go to waste.{picture sources:1,2,3 and 4}.

Modern lighting for a spiral staircase

Posted: 10 Aug 2012 12:46 AM PDT

Beirut is the last place I would thought that had one of the most interesting pieces in design and lighting fixtures. I'm expecting to see all sorts of innovative things in Milan or Paris but not in Lebanon. Now that I have these images in front of me, I will no longer start to look at things with preconceived ideas. If it's not clear yet, I am talking about this marvelous lighting fixture above the spiral staircase made out by .PSLAB. I love the idea because a spiral staircase needs something special to go with it and to alternate. Surrounded by square rooms and straight lines this staircase needed something to complement it and most of all its shape.

I don't think I would have thought about a lighting fixture to be the thing that goes with the stairs but know that I have seen it, looks pretty natural and very harmoniously converging towards a center core. I love the way each arm descends a little bit with each step of the stairs, keeping a very high degree of illumination upon all the steps.

I also like the way everything looks and if you look up from the base everything appears to be united and to climb high in the sky in and endless spiral.  The frame is painted in the same color as the staircase is and the rectangular holes from which light come out look like the individual steps; like a more dangerously continuation of the wooden stairs with no rails to put your hands on, nothing; just steps towards the sky.
