Contemporary dream house with backyard pool

Posted: 30 Jul 2012 10:20 AM PDT

The Banya house is a contemporary residence located in Brisbane, Australia. It was a project developed by TONIC and the main idea behind it was to create a sort of urban oasis. It's a space designed for relaxation and where its owners feel shielded from everything that happens outside. There are several important aspects that make this property so beautiful.

The house was designed around a central courtyard. This way all the rooms have views of the courtyard and this way they are quiet and tranquil. Moreover, there's also the connection with the outdoor area, even though it's through the windows and glass walls. The social spaces and living areas are connected to the central courtyard and the front yard and have access to both of them. The courtyard also includes a swimming pool and adjacent outdoor lounge area/terrace.

The walls facing the courtyard are almost entirely made of glass. This way the house is always filled with light without compromising its privacy and without the need of designing large windows for the areas facing the street or the other residences. The interior of the house is functionality divided into several areas. The living areas are the focal point because of their ability to open onto the outdoor areas. The house is indeed like an oasis in the middle of the city. It has a design that adapts beautifully to the climate and that is also flexible as to suit a variety of different preference.

Modern Industrial Wooden Desk

Posted: 30 Jul 2012 10:16 AM PDT

We live in a world that makes us purchase all kinds of goods that we do not necessarily need, but we keep buying them because we can’t help it. However, we could live just fine with very few things that are really necessary for us. I experimented this once when I got blocked in a mountain cabin for three days, away from any means of communication and without the possibility of leaving. It was then when I realized that you need very few things to have a nice and even happy existence. For example you can make your own furniture out of very simple and bare pieces of wood and you can combine technology and nature really well. So if you can’t live without your laptop or you need it for your job, you can simply find a nice piece of reclaimed wood that you can turn into this great Modern Industrial Wooden Desk.

This desk has a minimalist design and is made of reclaimed wood, combined from time to time with some metal parts like the hairpin legs. There is also a locker basket drawer and a slide out keyboard tray, the last one being also made of wood. Any way, this piece of furniture is very useful and has a very natural colour and design, matching a house with wooden panels and even a wooden cabin int he woods. This item can be bought for $425 from Etsy.

The Alterna Sofa by Adriano Castiglioni

Posted: 30 Jul 2012 08:55 AM PDT

Stylish, chic and yet somewhat robust, the Alterna sofa is a symbol of modern design and it's a piece of furniture that would easily integrate in both casual and elegant interior decors. The sofa was designed by architect Adriano Castiglioni for Tosato. It's a part of the Alterna collection. The series also includes pieces such as the Alterna secretary desk, swivel coffee table, dining oval table, TV cabinet or sideboard.

Like all the other pieces from this collection, the sofa has a design mainly based on functionality. The frame is strong and robust for better support and for durability and stability. It's composed of geometrical parts that form a strong composition without seeming very compact and without matching perfectly. The sofa is a 3-seater. Because the side pieces are so well-defined and have such a strong presence, they can also be used as informal extra seating spaces or as a mini-table.

This stylish multi-layer sofa has a wood frame with exposed parts. It's almost entirely covered in blue leather. The cushions are soft and very comfortable and the whole sofa has a structure that makes it perfect for lounging or relaxing, watching a movie or sitting comfortably while entertaining the guests. It's a modern piece of furniture that is easy to match with other styles and types and that adds that pop of color and style that your décor needs.

The Porch – a spiral-shaped house in Japan

Posted: 30 Jul 2012 08:12 AM PDT

Earth population is continuously increasing and yet the surface of our planet remains the same. It means we are faced with the challenge of finding ingenious solutions when it comes to finding a spot to build out homes. Architects Hideaki Takayanagi seem to have at least one of the answers.

They designed and built this unusually small residence located in Tokyo, Japan. The house is sitting in between two apartment buildings. The lot was narrow and small and this would have discourages most of the architects. However, instead of saying it is impossible to build a house on such a lot, the team from Hideaki Takayanagi decided to make the impossible possible. They started the Porch project. It refers to this apparently cramped house.

Built in 2012, the house covers an area of 109.0 square meters. Building it was challenging but the architects managed to create a very beautiful home. The client managed to save money since the site was tiny and to also have a unique home in a nice location. Because of the characteristics of the site, the architects were forced to create a spiral-shaped structure. The floor slabs and the roof are made of 4.5 mm thick steel plates. This makes the house lightweight and more resistant to earthquakes. It's yet one more advantage for its owner who also gets to enjoy the beauty of the surroundings thanks to the expansive windows and glass walls.{pics by Takumi Ota}.

The Protection furniture collection for kids

Posted: 30 Jul 2012 06:34 AM PDT

Protection is a playful furniture collection created by Korean designers Jaekyoung Kim and Hyunjin Seo. Its name is also the most important aspect to take into consideration when designing something to be used by children. The collection was designed to be enjoyed by both parents and children.

The pieces are simple and chic, they have functional designs but they are also friendly and have playful shapes that make them fun and appealing to children. The collection includes a lovely, child-size dresser, a series of ottoman shaped like train wagons, a table with storage pockets on its base as well as a cute baby bed. They all feature soft lines, smooth edges and rounded corners. They are made from materials with friendly surfaces and compositions and they have simple and functional designs.

One of the most attractive pieces is the set of ottomans. They all have wheels and they are interconnected using soft rope. One of them is the locomotive of the train and has a different design. It was a very creative idea. The table is also very ingenious. It has pockets attached to the bottom of the base, where children can easily reach them. They can be used to store books, magazines and other items children use. The dresser is very cute as well. Its small dimensions make it seem particularly lovely. It has drawers, open shelves and a place to hang clothes. What's particularly beautiful about this collection is the fact that the colors are mostly natural.

7 Simple single vanity design ideas

Posted: 30 Jul 2012 05:55 AM PDT

Bathroom vanities are very practical and functional as they offer you the possibility of having both a sink and additional storage space surrounding it and the space they occupy does not interfere with your other needs. Single vanities are particularly useful because of their dimensions and ability to integrate in both small and large spaces. We made a selection of single vanities featuring different styles and we hope you'll enjoy it.

1. European-inspired vanity.

This is a chic single vanity with a visible European-inspired design. It's small and simple and features a weathered look. It's made of wood and tends to resemble an antique piece. It has a wall-mounted faucet that saves space and gives more storage area for other elements. The faucet and the pipes can be relocated on other designs as well but you'll most likely need professional help as well as a custom-made vanity.

2. Feminine vanity.

This is a glamorous vanity with a strong feminine appeal. It features soft and light color and textures and it incorporates a sleek marble countertop with two stainless steel legs for support. This vanity has no storage space. Instead, the bathroom has built-in features that compensate for that. This is a nice alternative for those who want a simple, clean and stylish décor with a more spacious countertop.

3. Eclectic design.

Sometimes opposites attract despite the visible differences. For example, this vanity combines old and new elements in a beautiful way and the result is an eclectic but beautiful design. This is a classical vanity with modern amenities. It features dark wood stain and it's placed against a ceramic tile backsplash with contrasting earthy tones and it's a very beautiful statement piece.

4. Open vanity.

Open vanities are beautiful because they allow you to add useful storage space while also maintaining the airy look you created. This vanity features an open shelf with drawers tucked away beneath it. This way you have an open area for baskets, towels, etc. and closed drawers for more intimate items or for smaller objects that would be safer there.

5. Glamorous vintage vanity.

The design of this vanity is vintage and quite simple. However, the finishes and the texture of the surfaces make it sparkle. It's a glamorous vanity that was originally a mirror-paneled chest. It also features vintage-style fixtures and is complemented by a dramatic mirror that matches it beautifully. It has both small and large storage spaces inside it and a minimalist, black countertop for contrast.

6. Industrial-style vanity.

Industrial bathrooms are charming as well, even though they present less decorative details and tend to seem cold and detached. This vanity has clean lines and it has a durable and strong structure with timeless finishes. The stainless steel base features open storage. The round sink is complemented by a wall-mounted faucet that gives it a contemporary appeal.

7. Small and delicate vanity.

This is a particularly charming vanity that features a minimalist structure with subtle and delicate details. It's a one-of-a-kind piece made from a combination of salvaged and new materials. It features a glass mosaic tile base and a glass basin that matches the mirror. The bottom area features an open shelf, great for towels, bathroom supplies but also decorative elements.{pictures from bhg}.

Dexter Outdoor Bench

Posted: 30 Jul 2012 04:50 AM PDT

I always go camping and hiking in summer because there is a holiday and the weather is so fine and inviting you to spend more time outdoors. And I like keeping everything as natural as possible, so when I go to the forest I look for a big stump and I use it as a natural table in the woods. A smaller stump or even a nice log serves me as a stool and I finally have the dream lunch I was waiting for the whole year. I guess this “nature” thing of mine is also reflected in the things I choose to decorate my house and my garden, like this nice Dexter Outdoor Bench.

As you can see from the pictures it is made of wood and keeps its natural beauty intact, which is perfect for my taste. Its simple design is inspired by the classic Windsor style, but it is made from string wood that has a driftwood finish. The bench is great for outdoor meals and rests and it has a weather resistant coating. The curvy back seat surrounds the seating on all its length and is made of thin wooden bits of wood. Everything looks so cozy and comfortable, including the soft cushion that is sold separately. Any way, the item is natural looking and nicely designed, perfect for any country garden.

Modern apartment interior with accents of green in Warsaw

Posted: 30 Jul 2012 01:12 AM PDT

This beautiful apartment is located in Warsaw, Poland. It's a modern home with a flexible and stylish interior that was designed by Widawscy Studio Architektury. The interior of the apartment is an open space filled with natural light. The internal structure is very functional. The apartment was divided into several separate zones, each with its own function and purpose.

For example, there's a hall, a kitchen, a living area and a work space. These are all individual areas but together they form an ample and continuous space. The areas are only symbolically divided. This way a flexible interior was created and it's suitable for a variety of activities. The living spaces were merged into an open area. This way a multifunctional zone was created and it can be used for social activities, entertaining, working, dining, receiving guests or playing. Several smaller spaces overlap and form a continuous and coherent volume.

The color palette used for the interior décor includes mostly vibrant tones of blue, green, yellow as well as grey. These shades are harmoniously combined and they balance beautifully. They also bring the whole décor together by creating similarities between the rooms. Pattern and texture are also important elements and they have been used elegantly throughout the entire apartment. Even though the colors and vibrant and bold, the atmosphere in the apartment is calm and relaxing, with the potential of becoming fun and dynamic.

Vintage Flat Top Coffee Table

Posted: 30 Jul 2012 12:00 AM PDT

Vintage pieces have always caught the attention very easily thanks to their charm. People buy vintage items not only because they need some decorative or functional furniture but because they need to have items with a special story behind and a strong emotional charge.  This particular piece has a wonderful vintage architecture with a high potential for storing oversized documents, files and so on.

Very functional as we can see this piece looks good wherever you decide to put it, either is your large living room scarcely decorated with minimalist objects but with a very powerful meaning either in your personal office, where it can reflect your personality. It is quite a generous piece measuring 37.5"W x 37"D x 20"H, more than enough for all your staff but in the same time not too bulky.

As you can see the top has another color, unlike the rest of the table and drawers. This detail reveals the fact that that rough top was made from reclaimed wood and to preserve its charm and originality along with its history that flat top has variations and small "defects" like nail heads, knots, cracks and possibly oil stains. Although the exterior looks rugged the mechanics and frame fulfill the modern standards. For instance each one of those six drawers is set on locking casters. It weighs 143 pounds and costs 853 Euros. Is it worth it? I don't know. I'm going to let you decide.
