The modern home of stylist Louise Kamman Riisin

Posted: 28 Jun 2012 10:52 AM PDT

This beautiful residence is the home of Danish stylist Louise Kamman Riisin. As you can see, it's a modern but very simple house. Most of the décor is white. In fact, all the rooms have white walls, white ceilings and even white floors. An exception would be the bathroom where we can see a very nice and subtle combination of white and grey.

The living room shares an open floor plan with the kitchen and dining room. Apparently, some of the walls have been torn down and only a few columns were left for support. Here, almost all the furniture is white. Some exceptions would be the black pendant lamp above the kitchen island, the grey curtains, the black chair or the green patterned rug.

All these elements create visual contrast and break the monotony while also adding pattern and texture to the décor. The black pendant lamp is particularly beautiful. It's hanging from a transparent cord but also features a red cord that makes the lamp seem to be floating in the air.

The bedroom is surprisingly small and casual. It features a bunk bed, of course, white. A tiny nightstand seats near it and there's a bunch of pictures and small accessories above it. The rug is again an element that adds not only color but also texture. The rest of the house is just as simple, casual and stylish. It's almost entirely white with a few items here and there that add color and contrast.{found on Bolig}.

Acanthus Leaf Mirror

Posted: 28 Jun 2012 08:49 AM PDT

A house with bare walls is like an empty house , a deserted house with no people living in it. That is why many people use different things for decorating the walls. So when you can find a thing that is both useful and decorative, it is a lot better for everyone. This Acanthus Leaf Mirror is beautiful and decorative, but you can use it for its original purpose, too, and check out your reflection in it. The name of the mirror comes from the Acanthus leaf-shaped decorations that are glued to the frame of the mirror, making it so beautiful in design.

The frame of the mirror is made of hand cast resin and is also hand painted in a blue hue that makes it look great against a white wall and leaves the brownish accents underneath reveal themselves when the light falls on them. You can match this mirror with some light blue or even turquoise accessories in the living room or on the wall next to it and you will have an incredible  home design. The item is available to purchase from Wisteria and you will find it really easy to place the order online and wait for the product to be shipped directly to your doorstep.

Modular Slot Sofa

Posted: 28 Jun 2012 07:41 AM PDT

Usually a sofa is just a sofa and nothing more. However, the creators of the Slot sofa managed to reinvent this term. They designed a piece of furniture that puts three items in one. The Slot Sofa has a compact and sleek design but it hides a secret. As its name suggests, it has a clever and modular design that allows it to blend a sofa, a coffee table and an ottoman, all in the same structure.

The Slot sofa is a very dynamic and flexible piece of furniture. It's also a great acquisition for small spaces where it's usually difficult to fit everything you need inside a tiny room. This sofa allows you to have three pieces of furniture in one. It's not a typical modular unit that is usually just an extendable sofa that also serves as a bed or sectional. This one hides a coffee table and ottoman. These are all functional pieces of furniture that every home needs and has and it allows you to have them all in a very compact and attractive package.

The sofa features gaps between the cushions as most similar pieces. The difference is that in this case those gaps were used to accommodate a two-level structure. One you get it out you can put the cushions that were originally underneath it on top of the lower units and use them as ottomans while the middle structure can be sued as a coffee table. For functional and structural reasons the ottomans and the coffee table cannot be detached. When not needed, you can just slide this unit back where it fits like a piece of a puzzle.{found on behance}.

Lola Castejon’s enchanting attic

Posted: 28 Jun 2012 06:12 AM PDT

The attic in the picture is enchanting through every little thing it reveals, but especially through the fact that it takes us to bucolic landscapes. What can be more enchanting than this feeling? In spite of a certain rustic air, the attic is actually in the center of Madrid. Nothing compares with the mixture of styles; no matter it is a simple shelf, an extra large floor lamp, a China closet, a romantic piano style or family inheritance cages.

Nothing is more colorful than the panorama offered by the salon; there are different backgrounds that impress, but the funny thing is the fact that nothing is superfluous, everything fits perfectly.

The light, thanks to the existance of the three windows, plays one of the most important parts and this provides a warm, pleasant atmosphere that makes you feel good. It is obvious that white has priority in this spacious, cosmopolitan place with its somehow rustic air, with its surprising decoration, all belonging to the owner’s taste. The terrace was turned into a pleasant garden that is perfect for the moments when all family members are at home and share time together.

The clever mix of pieces, the modern drawings provide personality and all together reveal an original house with different furniture pieces that touch perfection thanks to the color uniformity given by white and brown.{found on micasarevista}.

Expedit Shelving Unit from IKEA

Posted: 28 Jun 2012 05:27 AM PDT

I am not very fond of complicated furniture or fancy modern bookcases because people now do not have as many books as before. Besides, it is a lot more useful to have a shelving unit that has many compartments that you can use for storing different kinds of things from books, statues, vases of flowers, flower arrangements and so on. This Expedit Shelving Unit from IKEA is perfect for my taste because it is simple in design and has a lot of interior cubes that you can arrange in different ways in order to obtain the best visual effect that you want.

This shelving unit is designed by Tord Björklund and is manufactured by IKEA, which is in itself a guarantee of high quality. What is really nice about this piece of furniture is the fact that it is finished on all sides and can also be used as a room divider. It is simple and stylish and is thicker on the sides, but having thinner shelves and this confers a nice and modern look. The material used is fiberboard and particle board and the shelves are fixed with stainless steel. The item is available in dark brown, white and birch effect and can be purchased directly from IKEA stores for $199.

Occordian Coat Rack

Posted: 28 Jun 2012 04:21 AM PDT

Usually when you enter someone’s house and outside it’s cold, you look for a place where to put your coat or umbrella if necessary. That is normal because you do not get into the living room all dressed up, but keep only the clothes for indoors. So you normally look for a coat rack that can be fixed on the wall – a kind of board with many hooks where you hang your coat or maybe a tree-like coat rack. Well, sometimes you will be surprised to find out that some coat racks do not look like what you can expect, but rather unusual, having an interesting design. This Occordian Coat Rack is the perfect example, as you would never guess its use unless you know it already.

In my imagination this original coat rack looks like pairs of hand cuffs, linked together and made of wood. They are connected and can be placed both horizontally and vertically and the oxidized dark knobs that are used to keep the halves together are the ones that serve as coat racks. The item is made in USA and the manufacturer used white oak for making it, which makes it look great in any hallway. You can choose whether the shape of this coat rack to be round or oval and this can be done by simply choosing where to place the hardware. Quite an interesting design I might say, offered by Lostine.

Apartment building turned into single family home

Posted: 28 Jun 2012 03:16 AM PDT

This structure used to be an apartment-building. It 2002 it was composed of seven apartments and had a whole different structure and function than it does now. Recently, the building was renovated and concerted into a single family home. As expected, the residence has everyone one would need and more. There's a hot tub on the roof and a wine-tasting room in the basement. The rest of the building is composed of six bedrooms, five full baths, two partial baths and two kitchens and they are spread along five floors. Throughout the residence there are six working fireplaces.

The current owner bought the building in 2002 and paid for it $2 million. The renovation started in 2003. At first, he wanted to make one of the apartment his own. Then, when the last tenant moved out of the building in 2006, he decided to turn the whole place into a single family home. It took him many years to complete this project but it was well worth the time and effort.

The house is composed of two triplexes and it has been renovated and updated but the architects tried to keep everything as close to the original as possible. They wanted to recreate the buildings original charm and beauty. The interior is bright, filled with natural light and very spacious. Even though it's a dream come true, the current owner finds this house to be too much for him. He decided to move into an apartment and to sell the building.{found on wsj}.

Sustainable renovation of the Hive apartment by Zvi Belling

Posted: 27 Jun 2012 11:30 PM PDT

This building is located in Melbourne and it has been recently renovated. It was a project designed by Zvi Belling of ITN Architects. It was a green and sustainable project and the building even got a bold exterior design. Local graffiti artist Prowla was asked to come up with the lettering for the exterior part that spells HIVE.

This unusual apartment was originally a tailor shop. It was then renovated and turned into this lovely home. It features a brick façade decorated with letters, arrows and drips of concrete. The graffiti-style façade is modern and unique and not something most people design from the beginning. The letters were among the first things that were installed, even before most of the renovation started. The apartment has quickly become a point of reference in the neighborhood. Its bold and eye-catching and the exterior acts like a shield for the quiet and calm interior.

The renovation wasn't just bold but also sustainable. The architect tried to come up with a plan that would have as little impact on the environment as possible. He sued louvered ports that help with the cross ventilation and covered with sliding panels. The doors were designed in a way that allows them to reduce temperature exchanges between rooms and thus reducing the energy needed to regulate the temperature. Electricity is provided by a solar panel system installed on the roof and rainwater is collected in a tank below the car park area.

20 Charming cottage-style kitchen decors

Posted: 27 Jun 2012 10:45 PM PDT

Since the kitchen nowadays is a social area and it's even part of the living space sometimes, a cottage-style décor would be a very good choice for this area. This style is casual, cozy and inviting and it's exactly how the kitchen needs to be. Such a décor is not difficult to create. The key is to use light colors and balanced textures. The kitchen should feel airy, bright and cozy.

Even though cottage-style decors are simple and seem modest, they are actually very elegant. Their beauty lies in this simplicity and in the small details. One of the most important aspects in such a décor is the light. The kitchen needs to be filled with natural light. It's why the windows need to be large and the décor needs to be simple and airy. The colors are also very important. The most common color in this case is white and it's mostly used for the walls but also for the furniture. It makes the space seem larger and the atmosphere becomes fresh and crisp.

Pastel colors are also very popular for this style. You can use tones of blue, green, light grey or beige. Make sure not to use too many colors. Everything needs to be clean and simple. The furniture needs to be simple and to offer plenty of storage space and open shelves. Wooden furniture is also very popular. The combination of white and natural brown is very beautiful. As for the decorations, it's best to stick with the classics. These include moldings, cornices and, of course, decorations made of fresh flowers.
