Tonight I am going to talk about an icon in the design of lighting items in the 1950s – Isamu Noguchi. As you can see from his name, he is a Japanese artist who was famous in the second half of the twentieth century. He tried to blend traditional Japanese handcraft and paper lanterns with his modern vision, obtaining very interesting lamps. His works are still very much liked and still fresh in approach, despite the length of time since they were designed. This Akari Table Lamp by Isamu Noguchi for example drew my attention on the spot thanks to its fragile appearance and great style.

This particular lamp looks like a beehive and is made of three distinct parts that continue to the top in a gentle rounded manner. It is a kind of paper lantern and it was manufactured in Gifu, Japan at the time. It is totally hand made and the designer used washi paper and bamboo ribbing for the best visual effect. The lamp is supported by a metal frame and four thing legs and this makes it easy to place anywhere in the house, while the handle situated on top of the lamp allows you to easily move it anywhere you want to. This lamp is now available for $250.

Kids are incredible when it comes to the mess they can make in a closed space like a house. I don’t know how they can find so many things to tear apart and throw and destroy in a very short time. And, of course, once they are split into little pieces they are not interesting any more and end up thrown in the wastebin. Well, the waste bin in my kids room is always full. But sometimes it’s not so convenient to have only a waste paper bin there because my kids want to throw some other things like banana peel, bits of biscuits and some other items that leak and drip all over the place. Fortunately, a guy named Konstantin Slawinski found an ingenious solution for this problem. He designed the wastebin that comes with a safe container insert for liquids and food.

This wastebin is very useful and is made in Germany. The designer thought it would be a good idea to make it of durable polypropylene because this material is very lightweight and also very easy to clean. It comes with a small container for perishable items and this container will be perfectly sealed in order to avoid any leaking or spreading of the smell inside. The item comes in different colour combinations and can be bought for $65.

The Aesop boutique in Ginza by Schemata Architecture Office

This is what used to be 35-year old shop located in Ginza, a region of Japan. The shop was in pretty bad condition, not to mention the old interior design. But even so, it had potential. A while ago this old shop was converted into a beautiful Aesop boutique and it also got a new look with the occasion.

The change wasn't very dramatic. The boutique preserved the traditional look and the principal materials used in the renovation were red bricks, concrete and natural wood. Even though the shop got a serious makeover, it still has that old look but that's design the architects were trying to achieve. They tried to incorporate some of the elements from the old shop into the new design and to make a smooth transition.

The old shop once has a façade covered with red brick tiles. However, the tenants above didn't like the bricks and painted them. In order to recreate that look, the architects chose to create a red brick interior that doesn't bother the others but that also makes the connection with the past. They also incorporated several wooden boards on which the products are displayed. The boutique is a long and narrow space and it looks even more mysterious with this décor. It's an intriguing new look, both old and new.The interior design was done by Schemata Architecture Office, and pictures by Alessio Guarino.

Scandinavian residences feature a very specific style and they have that unique warm feeling that can’t be avoided, no matter what materials or colors you use. Handpainted Ceramic Plates from Mothology

Normally plates are used for eating. You just put some food there and serve it. So you can rarely see the design of a plate, maybe except some of the margins. But sometimes you have so beautiful plates that you can use them as decorative objects, too. These Handpainted Ceramic Plates from Mothology are the best example. They are so beautiful that you will be delighted to use them for both purposes. The ceramic plates you can find here, on Mothology are colourful and great, round but also square in shape, perfect for desert and also for fruit or for dinner courses.

The thing I liked most about these plates is the wonderful combination of colours. You are surprised to see blue and yellow and white, all on the same plate, which also contains some red spots every now and then. It is not too much and they all look great together. The floral motives are place next to the geometrical ones, completing the whole design in a very pleasant way. The plates come in different sizes and you can choose them as you wish or need, so it is only normal to have them available for different prices. For example a small and square lotus plate can be purchased for $40 and the bigger ones for $70.

Amsale Aberra’s Stylish New York Loft

This chic and stylish apartment belongs to bridal gown designer Amsale Aberra. The apartment is located in New York, on the 5th floor of an industrial building in the Garment District. I’ve always been curious to see how exactly does the home of bridal gown designer looks like. These designers are used to work with white all the time, with lace and puffy materials and I wonder if they really like this or if they can’t wait to go home and relax in their simple apartment.

Now we finally have the opportunity to take a look at such an apartment. In this case the apartment is obviously similar to the materials and textures that the designer works with. The influence is very visible. Notice how all the walls have been painted in Benjamin Moore Super White. It’s hard to believe that this is just a coincidence. This either means that this designer really loves this job or that the time spent designing white bridal gowns has irreversibly changed their perception. Amsale Aberra’s apartment is very chic and has an extremely delicate interior décor.

The décor that you see here has been created by interior designer Vicente Wolf who is actually Amsale’s neighbor. The two designer worked together and managed to find a common style that they both agreed with. Notice how the textures and materials differ but still look very good when combined.
