Chic loft in Paris

Posted: 06 Nov 2011 08:21 AM PST

There are certain things that are specific to each culture. Sometimes we don't even realize it but for foreigners they are very visible. These elements are not striking, meaning that they can be very small things and details but they have something that makes you think of a certain culture or a certain region. Take this apartment for example. It's a chic loft and even if you haven't seen the work "Paris" in the title you would have probably noticed the specific style.

One thing that I've noticed in several French interiors are those storage units, those wall-mounted structure with all sorts of cubicles of different shapes and sizes. I don't know why but French people seem to like those. I guess they are pretty functional and they simple enough to match their style. Other elements that could describe this place would be the white walls, ceilings and even floors and the minimalist furniture.

The loft is situated on the third floor of a building and it covers a surface of 60 square meters. It's a relatively small place so some tricks were necessary to at least make it seem bigger. One of them was the use of the white. Another one was related to the sliding door that helped gain some more ground space. The apartment could be defined by two words: white and wood. These are the main elements that could characterize it. It's a simple décor but it's also elegant and chic.{found here}

Contemporary residence in Costa d’en Blanes by SCT Estudio de Arquitectura

Posted: 06 Nov 2011 06:00 AM PST

This striking residence is located in Costa d'en Blanes, Mallorca, Spain and it's a very impressive structure. The house was a project developed by SCT Estudio de Arquitectura. It's definitely a very modern creation and some might even call it contemporary. The truth is that the house was completed in 2009 so it's a new creation but not the latest.

The house was built on a long and narrow plot and this made things a little more difficult, also because of the slope. On the site there was an already existing house. The owners wanted first to demolish the old house in order to make room fro the new one. The main idea for the new house was a simple structure, clear and yet eye-catching. First the architects had to decide how to position the rooms. The night zones were positioned on the ground floor white the day zones on the upper floor as to benefit as much as possible from the natural light. There's also a pool and solarium on that level.

In order to create that simple structure the owners wanted, the façades have been treated as a ribbon that folds, resulting on an organic shape. The façade is made of heavy concrete while the lateral enclosures are made of glass, a very fragile material. The contrast in this sense is very visible. The house also includes a solarium, a patio terrace, as well a lounge area, covered terraces and, of course, the bedrooms, kitchen and all the other rooms.{found on archdaily and pics by José Hevia}

Evermotion 3D visualization contest

Posted: 06 Nov 2011 03:24 AM PST

Every once in a while, Evermotion organize contests where talented designers can show their potential. One of this type of contests challenged the competitors to come up with a finished render of a 3D model of the house they were given. As you can imagine, each contester cape up with a different idea and different concept for the same house.

Their choices vary from heavily industrial to antique and they are all interesting to see. So here are some of the models they've created. The first one is actually the winning design. It was created by Mia Sani and it's a very industrially-looking design. There's a lot of metal involved in that design. The pool features rocks on the bottom and the whole idea is intriguing.

The second position was occupied by Jan Drozdiak's design. This one has a nice Japanese look with cherry blossoms falling in the pool and an intimate alcove deck. The 3rd place was occupied by István Vastag who created a more romantic setting. The house is this time located by a lake and it has an aged look, tranquil and private. There were also some other very interesting design that didn't make the top 3 but are still worth seeing. There was also a medieval design, a stone setting and one that looks like a beach house.

The exotic Residence Zanzibar by HBA

Posted: 06 Nov 2011 01:51 AM PST

Residence Zanzibar, in spite of its misleading name, is actually a resort located on a remote corner of the island of Zanzibar. It was designed by HBA / Hirsch Bedner Associates. The resort covers an area of over 80 acres and it's composed of 66 villas featuring a colonial theme inspired from the Swahili, Omani, British and Indian cultures that can be found in the area of Zanzibar.

This is definitely an impressive resort, luxurious and very beautiful. Each of the 66 villas has its own private terrace and swimming pool. The villas are modern but also natural, managing to blend in into the landscape and fit with the surroundings. As for the interior designs of these villas, many of the artifacts and furniture have been taken from local markets and shops, thus reflecting the natural beauty of the resort.

All the furniture in the villas is a mix of styles and cultures reflecting the various influences that can be found in Zanzibar and its history. These artifacts include hand-painted artwork presenting scenes of Zanzibar, photographs of Dhows, the Arab sailing vessel as well as many other decorations. The décor is a combination of white and tones of beige. The atmosphere is fresh and very calm. It's a very romantic resort, a sophisticated getaway where you spend an unforgettable summer.{found on freshome}
