The Chieftains Chair by Finn Juhl

Posted: 02 Nov 2011 10:53 AM PDT

You might be tented to think that primitive items have been long-forgotten and basically unable to inspire new and modern creations. Well, I used to think that way too until I found this incredibly interesting chair. The chair was designed by Finn Juhl and produced by Onecollection. You can certainly see the primitive inspiration for this design. Still. It has been designed in a way that makes it seem modern as well.

The Chieftains Chair by Finn Juhl

The chair has a shape inspired by primitive weaponry and a sculptural form that makes it seem suspended above the frame. It's surprising how such old and basically historic elements can inspire such a modern creation. It's even more surprising how modern we find this chair when it was actually designed in 1949.

The chair was created for the 1949 Cabinetmakers' Guild in Copenhagen. The story of its name is also interesting. During the exhibition, King Frederick IX sat in the chair and so a journalist suggested the name "King's chair". Still, the designer didn't really like the way that sounded but it gave him an idea. He then proposed the alternative " chieftain's chair". At some point the apostrophe was dropped thus resulting the current name. This sculptural chair was crafted using walnut for the frame and leather for the upholstery. The chair can be purchased for $13,900.

Original Treehouse by Baumraum Studio

Posted: 02 Nov 2011 09:24 AM PDT

Children love fantasy movies and so do some adults. The King of the Frogs Treehouse is one of those projects that will leave you speechless. Designed by German studio Baumraum and located in Münster, a city in North-Westphalia, Germany, this unique house is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

This original treehouse has a spirit of adventure, it can be a tranquil retreat and a romantic hideaway close to nature. The exterior is clad in zinc sheets and lamellas of tatajuba wood underneath. The walls, floors and furniture are made of white glazed ash that underlines the bright and minimalistic character of the interior. Moreover the terrace rests on four stainless steel stilts just like the cabin itself.

This lovely 92sqf treehouse is simple and has some great windows that will allow you to take in the surrounding nature. Although it isn’t big, you can also find storage space for an extra blanket or pillow. Another spectacular aspect is that visitors have to reach the staircase across 3 natural-stone steps between water lilies, which is amazing.

The King of the Frogs Treehouse is an unique and magical place that brings back childhood memories, and with them the desire to climb up and enter a wonderful world. What do you think?

Before and After: Some Painting Can Make the Difference

Posted: 02 Nov 2011 08:04 AM PDT

When I was little I spent a lot of time in the country side at my grand parents. Although at that time I was not enchanted by the tasks given by my grandparents, now I remember the beautiful and funny parts of those moments and the fact that I learned a lot of new things that proved very useful in time. Here everything was natural and rustic and hardly could you notice a trace of modern technology. Food was always fresh and warm, the air could not be compared with that from the city and people were characterized by a specific naivety that is usually met at the people from the country side.

I cannot forget the old furniture that it needed some repairing and reconditioning. This DIY project reminded me of all these facts. It refers to a miniature dresser bought by couple which got a new look as it was just the rough wood. The outdated wood stain was removed with a coarse grained sand paper and a small power sander.

In order to smooth it out, they also used a finer sand paper and then used a water-based primer and coated the dresser with two thin coats. For a better result the primer was sanded too. Then four or five thin layers of paint were applied and it was used a small foam roller for a smoother coverage. The couple was satisfied with the result and ready to move the dresser in their room.{found on apartmentteraphy}

The gracious Haviland table

Posted: 02 Nov 2011 07:09 AM PDT

Finding a table as graceful as this one is not as easy as you might think. Of course, its not fair to compare it with anything else because every design is unique. Still, I find this particular table very graceful and elegant. It features a design inspired by the French Deco style. Still, the materials used are timeless. The table was crafted with a stone top and an iron base. The base has a hand-applied gold leaf finish.

The gracious Haviland table

The table is relatively small so it could be used as a coffee table or side table. Of course, if you need a larger table you can purchase more than one and place them next to each other to form a larger table. The item it sold as single. The table has a very simple design, with no decorations except the shape itself. The gracious legs are the focal point in this design.

The table ships fully assembled so all you have to do is wait for it to be delivered. Like all the other products offered by DwellStudio, this table is also non-cancellable, non-returnable and non-refundable and if an item is damaged or defective it will be replaced or repaired. The dimensions of the table are 22″ W x 18″ D x 18″ H. You can buy it for the price of $720.00 per piece and you can expect delivery in 1-2 weeks.

Stylish and dynamic Swedish Apartment

Posted: 02 Nov 2011 05:47 AM PDT

I've never really understood what makes Scandinavian interior designs so special. But I think I found an apartment that incorporates all the dynamic and chic elements from that area. This apartment is located in Sweden. It has a total surface of 125 square meters and a very beautiful interior décor that combines tradition with modernity.

Stylish and dynamic Swedish Apartment

The apartment includes a lot of mid century furniture pieces and still, it manages to look fresh and modern. That's because there's actually a combination of styles in there. Traditional elements like the cozy furniture, the doors that separate some of the room and even some decorations have been combined with modern elements like the minimalist and dynamic pendants or some of the art pieces from the walls.

The interior décor is mostly white with some black and some vibrant colors popping here and there. It's a very clean and simple apartment and still, it's not cold. It manages to be inviting and cozy, just like a Scandinavian home would be like. What I really like about the apartment is the fact that it has large windows and high ceilings. These are elements that make a place seems spacious and brighter, even though in reality it might be smaller than you think. This is an apartment that manages to take the black and white combination to a whole new level.{found here}

The Theatre Sofa by Ted Boerner

Posted: 02 Nov 2011 05:09 AM PDT

The extremely comfortable Theatre Sofa is part of the Theatre Collection and it was designed by Ted Boerner in 2001. Since Ted used to be a theatre and dance student, he developed a great sense of perception when it comes to the shape of the body. His experience influenced many of his latter creations. He began to pay more attention to the human body and the way it changes its shape when a person sits down. This allowed him to come up with innovative designs that focus on shape rather than on material in order to make the user feel comfortable.

Theatre Sofa in Edelman All-Grain Leather

Notice the gentle angled back of this sofa, the full seat depth and the elevated arms. These are all elements meant to make you feel more comfortable. The designer focused of form and not on excessive layers of studding that are supposed to make us more comfortable. As a result, his creations are very successful in this matter.

Theatre Sofa in Edelman All-Grain Leather

The Theatre sofa is now available in Edelman® All-Grain Leather. The sofa features a steel base that provides support and durability. It also has a kiln-dried hardwood frame, unidirectional web suspension and high-density, high-resilience foam cushions with Dacron Wrap. Unfortunately this product is not available at the moment but we hope it will be soon. Until then you can check out some of the other products from the same collection.Available here.

How to build your own chicken coop

Posted: 02 Nov 2011 04:42 AM PDT

If you like eggs and chickens and you have the space for them in your yard or garden, then why not build yourself a chicken coop? This way you'll have cute chickens which the kids will love and you'll also have some fresh eggs now and then. You don't even have to be a specialist for that because you can build your own chicken coop and we'll teach you how.

How to build your own chicken coop

Start with the base of the coop. Make sure there's plenty of space underneath for the chickens to use. After deciding on the legs, use 3'' screws in each post to make it durable and sturdy. Then get to the wall framing. It also has to be sturdy and durable. After this is done, get the walls up. You can place the wood vertically or horizontally and, if you can find some, you can use larger pieces. Before going any further, don't forget about the nesting boxes inside.

After this is done, you'll have to get to the roof. Use plywood for this section. Add paint and tar paper. As you can see, this chicken coop also has windows. You don't have to do that if you don't want to. The chicken won't even notice them anyway. However, the door is absolutely necessary. After everything is done, you can paint the coop. This is the part where you can be creative.{found on housewivesofriverton}
