Marguerite Chair by Borek Sipek for Driade

Posted: 29 Sep 2011 11:24 AM PDT

Driade is a well-known furniture company that sells chairs, stools, tables and many other similar items all over the world. Borek Sipek, a Czech designer, was hired by them and the combination proved a great one. One of the results of this association is the Marguerite chair that has a special and delicate design. The chair has a very nice floral back rest that looks like a stylized lotus flower and simply looks great.

The chair is made of lacquered aluminum and has a refined exquisite shape and look. The material used for Marguerite  Chair by Borek Sipek makes it lightweight and easy to move from one place to another and it can also be used for outdoors because aluminum is not affected by weather. You can use it just like that – with the aluminum framework, but if you want more comfort, you could add a cushion. It is removable, so basically your choice. You can order the item here for $424.

Blur Building

Posted: 29 Sep 2011 10:23 AM PDT

Switzerland was chosen to host the international exhibition pavilion in 2002 and in Yverdon-les-Bains. It was a great success partly to the location chosen and designed on this occasion. It is called the “Blue building” and it was designed by Diller Scofidion+ Renfro. The building is nothing out of the ordinary in itself, but it does have something special that was the biggest attraction then and now, too. It is a special mechanism that produces a continuous curtain of blur that surrounds the building and makes it really special and unique.

There are special mechanical devices that pump out water from Lake Neuchatel and throw it around the building through 35,000 high pressure nozzles. This makes it possible for the mist to always surround the construction and attracts tourists. But this is not all. There is even a smart weather system that measures air temperature and pressure, wind direction and intensity and then decides the amount of water pushed through the nozzles in order to obtain the wanted effect of mist. Great design and visual effect.

US Naval Ship Light

Posted: 29 Sep 2011 09:33 AM PDT

When you are a child and start reading books, your imagination goes wild and you imagine traveling the seas on board a ship or even a submarine, next to captain Nemo or Ahab. That is because the sea has always fascinated man and we have always dreamed of conquering it. So you will be glad to hear I found this incredible US Naval Ship Light that is a kind of lamp that can be used in your home, but it will give your home a special appearance because it really is a naval ship light.

The ship light was used on a real US ship some time back in the 1950s, but now it is only an old ship light that can be used as a home light for those who love the sea. It was a bit embellished to look better and all the wires have been changed with cloth ones, but it still looks great. You can have it for $795 and your wish will come true.

Cozy single-family residence in Laguna Beach, CA

Posted: 29 Sep 2011 08:21 AM PDT

The house that you here now wasn't always part of the picture. It has a nice story nevertheless. Katie, the current owner of this place, has spent most of her life right in that area. You'll a cottage that's still there. That used to belong to her father. Katie grew up in the house next door until she reached a time when she decided she wanted her own place. However, she didn't want to live that area so she decided to build a house on the other side of the road, together with her ex-husband.

Because on the lot were some Torrey Pines that have been planted at her birth by her father, the new house had to be built around them, as not to destroy them. The new organization also included the existing cottage that has been restored and used as a place to live during construction. The new structure wrapped around the cottage and it was connected to a garden room, originally conceived as an enclosed porch. The cottage has been used as a guest house after that.

The new has the kitchen and the living room in the middle with high ceilings and glass walls overlooking the garden. The living room is also connected to a deck. Underneath there's a bedroom. The whole concept was to create a home that would respond to the landscape and the client's needs. The materials used were bamboo, maple, stucco and stone in earth colors, helping create a contemporary look.{found here}

A refrigerator with a built-in draft beer system

Posted: 29 Sep 2011 06:17 AM PDT

Who doesn't like draft beer. It's something that you discover at an early age, you grow up with and you like until you die. Now image how it would be to have a draft beer system in your home. If you're worried about space, it's not a problem. We found a refrigerator that solves this difficulty.

Here's a Northstar refrigerator that features a built-in draft beer system. It's a genius idea. I don't think anyone even though of this before, but it's a very clever idea. This way you can have something so fun and functional in your home and you don't even have to make space for it because it comes with the fridge.

And since there are so many different refrigerator models and offers out there, this would be a great advantage for this one. If you don't know which one to choose because they are all good and offer pretty much the same things, how about you take home the one that also gives you fresh beer?

There are 3 different models to choose from: 1950, 1951, and 1952. But in order to be able to take this beauty home you'll have to pay an extra $800 for the draft beer system, in addition to the price of the fridge. I say it would be a good investment and it's definitely something that will make your kitchen special. The Brew Master draft system, includes through-the-door tap dispenser, coupler, connections, CO2 cylinder and drip tray.

The tiny Bull chair for kids

Posted: 29 Sep 2011 05:48 AM PDT

A bull is definitely not something you would want near your children. But rules don't apply to this one. "Bull" is a fun piece of furniture that was designed especially for kids. The name doesn't really do it justice because Bull is not at all scary like the real animal. It's rather cute and very friendly.

The tiny Bull chair for kids

Bull was designed for kids between 3 and 6 years old and it's basically a tiny chair. It takes its name from the shape of the chair and the big wheel that resembles a bull's head. To me it looks more like a ram but let's stick with the original name. The backrest of this chair is a giant spinning wheel and this allows the kids to use it as a basket or a trolley that they can carry around and play with.

Because of its fun and friendly shape, the Bull could very well become toy itself. It has curved lines and a child-safe design so you don't have to worry about your children's safety. The Bull is made of Baltic birch plywood and it's currently a prototype. However, the design is available for interested companies. So if you find this cute chair interesting and decide to give it a chance, don't hesitate to contact Ander Lizaso. I'm sure the kids will agree that it would be a fun addition to their room.

Fabricville Office by Electric Dreams

Posted: 29 Sep 2011 05:21 AM PDT

Even though the name reminds us of those little games we play on Facebook, Fabricville is a very serious office located in Gothenburg. It was designed by Catharina Frankander and Joel Degermark from Electric Dreams and it cover a surface of 1.500 sqm that goes along three levels. The office has 150 employees and each level is occupied by a different firm. That's why each level also has its own color scheme that matches the identity of the brand.

The idea behind this design was to recreate a little village, since there are so many common elements between a busy company headquarters and a little village. You'll see that the hallways resemble streets and you even get the impression that you're walking on the small streets of a village. There are both public and private spaces, work spaces and recreational areas and the décor is inspired by traditional Swedish wooden cottages.

In order to obtain this new look, some changes had to be made. Originally this space was divided into several offices and they had to be combined to form the giant 3-level office that you see here now. The décor had to be changed as well since there were many traces of earlier renovations that didn't match with the rest. The different ceiling heights were a challenge but in the end everything turned out more than ok.

Mauricio Arruda’s São Paulo Apartment

Posted: 29 Sep 2011 04:39 AM PDT

Today we're going to take a peak at this lovely apartment owner by Mauricio Arruda. It's located in São Paulo, Brasil and it's a classic beauty. The apartment was first purchased in 1957 and its original layout was a little different than it is now. Back then it was divided into social, service and living areas. Some changes had to be made but nothing too dramatic. There's still a harmonious connection between old and new.The materials and finishes inside are typical to the 1950s but the décor also has a modern twist.

The apartment had to suffer a major renovation during which all the wall were knocked down except for the central pillar. During the renovation, the kitchen had been moved to another location and a bedroom was removed. Also, two bathrooms were made into one. This opened up the whole space and now the kitchen is connected to the living room.

The floors were painted black while the walls are white. This allows a nice contrast with the furniture. The living area is filled with natural light. The furniture is local and so are the fabrics used. The arm chairs and the tables are part of Mauricio Arruda's private collection. In the dining room there's a House of Cards dining table, designed by Arruda. You'll notice that the entire interior décor is carefully planned, every little piece is in its place and all the elements work together to form a harmonious image.{pics by Fran Parente}

Colorful DIY Paper Pumpkins

Posted: 29 Sep 2011 03:58 AM PDT

This year at school I intend to prepare a special lesson about Halloween. First of all I need some hardworking pupils who adore involving in such a nice project. Then we must create a scenario for the lesson and establish everybody's role. An important ingredient for such a lovely lesson would be the Halloween decorations. The classroom needs to look arranged properly for Halloween. Images of bats, spiders, witches can invade the walls of the classroom while the pupils may try some Halloween costumes.

As the symbol of this holiday is the pumpkin, we cannot forget about its existence for our lesson too. As last years we used real pumpkins, this year I intend to make the pupils create their own pumpkins.This DIY project is perfect for my intention .It refers to some colorful DIY Paper Pumpkins. The advantage is that they can be made easily, are cheap and can be stored in a easy way.

Here are the materials that you need for this lovely DIY project:  2 sheets of matching scrapbook paper, ribbon, a hole punch and a paper cutter. You may also use them as autumn decorations for your home and think of how lovely they will look at your windows where everybody can admire them!{found on craftinessisnotoptional}

SEI bottle rack by Ander Lizaso

Posted: 29 Sep 2011 02:58 AM PDT

SEI is another creative design from Ander Lizaso. He just started his career as a designer and currently has a few very promising creations. One of them is the Bull, a very fun and friendly piece of furniture designed for the kids and that you can read about in another one of our articles. SEI is a less complex design but it's equally impressive.

SEI bottle rack by Ander Lizaso

It was designed for the kitchen or dining room and it's basically a bottle rack. Unlike most similar creations, this one takes very little space and it's equally efficient. SEI is currently a prototype and it's made of cold pressed plywood. The frame gently wraps around up to six bottles of wine. It has a very simple design with a partition placed vertically and separating the interior into two parts and two smaller ones. It's enough to keep the bottles in place.

Because of its shape, SEI offers the perfect amount of stability and support and reduces material waster to a minimum. Moreover, it reduces the space needed to store the piece. Place it horizontally or vertically anywhere you want. Plus, now that I think about it, it seems like a very convenient way to transport bottles. They sit there safe and quiet and they take very little space. This design seems like another success.
