Sophisticated kitchen and bathroom designs by Tobi Fairley

Posted: 07 Sep 2011 10:29 AM PDT

If you like elegant and sophisticated homes, then you'll probably also like these kitchen and bathroom designs. There two particular rooms of the house were designed by Tobi Fairley who wanted to create a sophisticated but nor overdecorated look. The key was to keep things simple and to use matching color tones.

The kitchen is designed around an island that had plenty of storage space. The whole room has been furnished with elegant pieces that have a vintage touch. In contrast, simple and classy fixtures were added, adding some sparkle to the room. The faucets and the lighting fixtures are slightly more modern than the rest of the furniture. Nevertheless, because of their minimalism and neutral color tones, they integrate perfectly into the décor.

The bathroom is also decorated in the same style, using similar colors. Both rooms are airy and elegant. The bathroom is actually a little more sophisticated than expected. Even though I was imagining a similar vintage-modern combination, I didn't expect to see a table and a chair in there.

The sea glass tiles are also a very beautiful detail that contributes to the overall chic décor. Moreover, the simple but striking pendant from the bathroom integrates beautifully into the design. It looks like a very cozy and inviting place. Probably the rest of the house shares the same characteristics.{found on athomearkansas}

Funky House with Playful Decor in Barcelona

Posted: 07 Sep 2011 07:02 AM PDT

Barcelona is well-known for its vibrancy, magnitude and quirkiness when it comes to architecture. This next home is beautiful, bold and was featured on Mi Casa Revista. It is funky and playful, two of the things that define the Catalan region.

This house has simple and chaotic interiors, almost a child-like decor. The designers used a soft, neutral color palette that creates the feeling of a bright, airy space. Moreover, as you can see this house has big windows that bathe the place in natural light. This home has an eclectic flair due to the mixture of modern and classic elements, such as the contemporary furnishings combined with the traditional shutters and the moldings.

As you can see the designers created some unique features, like the bookcase which is integrated in the staircase. Furthermore, you can find funky carpet designs throughout the entire house, pieces that remind of Gaudi’s work. Another interesting element is the swirling bookshelf that gives the living room a playful vibe. What’s more, they managed to separate the bathroom from the living area with the help of a beaded curtain. The bookshelf/stairs lead to an upstairs loft area and we can also see purses hanging from what seems to be dripping parts of wood panel installed into the wall.

All in all, this funky, eclectic house is a great place to live in. It is interesting, edgy and has the perfect balance between simplicity and bright colors.

The Lumbrein Residence in Graubunden, Switzerland

Posted: 07 Sep 2011 05:45 AM PDT

Located in Graubunden, Switzerland, at the periphery of the village, this small but lovely home brings dynamism into the surrounding area and creates a nice geometrical image. The house was built and designed by Hurst Song Architekten. They didn't want to build a standard traditional home, but more like a modern and simple home, with only the strictly necessary elements.

The landscape was not very friendly at the beginning and it didn't change much since then. The house stands on a sloping field which would be a big inconvenience for some people. However, it wasn't an obstacle for these owners and the architects working at the project. The entry to the house is made through the basement. The house was designed in a way that would make it face the street and also allow the users to enjoy the wonderful views.

The house has a very definite geometrical shape, with few but effective windows and a glass door. The roof is made of vertical wooden planks, which have been treated with a waterproof dark stain. The rest of the house is a combination of concrete, wood and glass. The living room has concrete floor and walls, while the bedroom is a little more inviting and friendly, featuring wood floors with matching timber walls and ceiling. There also a garage incorporated into the design.

Young Couple Cedar House in Nova Scotia,Canada

Posted: 07 Sep 2011 04:44 AM PDT

Located in Nova Scotia, Canada, this modest but eye-catching house was a project developed by Omar Gandhi. The project didn’t consist in a completely new building. The house was already existent in the site but the owners wanted to create an addition. The new addition was built in 2011 and it was a 1000 sq f project.

The clients, Dr, Lynda Earle and Dr, Andy Blackadar, have lived in Nova Scotia for most of their lives. They had to move to Ontario to complete their residencies but eventually they decided to go back. As a result they had two options. They could either move and find a new house or build an addition to the already existing building. They chose the last variant. The addition and renovation of the house was rather simple.

The owners wanted to preserve the original design of the house and to also use local materials and traditional building techniques in the process of renovation and construction. The idea was to preserve the modest look seen from the street and to also make some internal changes that would make the house ore efficient.

They had to change the heating system, to add an air exchanger and to build all the new walls according to Nova Scotia Building Code requirements R24 and the roof to R40. The new place is more open, with larger windows and lots of natural sunlight.{pics by Greg Richardson Photography}

The Tent House in Jakarta by atelier riri

Posted: 07 Sep 2011 03:43 AM PDT

Located in Jakarta, Indonesia, this beautiful house was a project developed by atelier riri. The reason why it’s called the Tent House is because it features a tent-like-shaped roof. This offers it a modern and unique look and in the same time it makes the house stand out in the surroundings.

The roof is definitely the most eye-catching part of the house, especially with the dark red color that instantly meets the eye. The roof is also made from friendly recycle able metal that supports the concept of sustainable living that the owners are aiming for.

The house actually sits on a large lot but only occupies half of the space. The rest is a large open space, perfect for relaxing outdoor time. The interior and exterior areas of the house are very clearly defined but they still manage to create a smooth and subtle contrast, communicating with each other. The interior of the house is simple and elegant. The predominant color is yellow which creates a relaxing and warm atmosphere. This, in combination with all the wood elements and pieces of furniture create a really inviting image.

The house was designed for a young couple with a child. Since everyone needed their personal space, the house was cleverly divided into separate rooms, located conveniently on both levels. The first floor includes the public and service areas while the bedroom, the child bedroom and the bathroom are located on the upper floor.

A Simple and Elegant Storage Collection

Posted: 07 Sep 2011 12:08 AM PDT

There are objects that impress through their complexity and things that are emphasized through their simplicity. Adams Storage Collection is part of the second category, that of simple beautiful things that do not need anything else as they speak for themselves. Clean lines, solid wood frame and legs characterize this collection, no matter it is as chocolate or simply white.

The general picture, but also the details get to the same conclusion: simple and elegant products are the best option, no matter how critical you are! The drawers open on smooth metal glides that underline the elegance and simplicity of the entire piece of furniture. It is difficult to choose between the white version and the chocolate one, as both of them have a certain charm that makes them unique.

They perfectly fit into the atmosphere of any house, providing a special mood that makes you feel at home. No matter you choose the 3/4/6 drawers, the nightstand or the media console with their different size, you cannot fail as each of them follows the same model: that of simplicity, elegance, good taste and style.

It is definitely the kind of collection where you can find whatever you are looking for, the kind of pieces that constitute a nod to mid-century design, the ones you want to own.Available from 110e.

Domespaces: innovative energy efficient homes

Posted: 06 Sep 2011 11:43 PM PDT

Are you tires of the same old houses you see everywhere and you don't want to live in an apartment either? If you really want to experience something different, you should try the Domspace. There clever houses, if they can be called like that, offer more benefits than you might think of.

For example, a great advantage is that the dome is a very energy-efficient house. It features solar panels that provide usable energy during the day and you really don't need any other energy-source until the sun disappears from the sky. In order to make them as efficient as possible, some domes feature a rotating system.

Eclosion 7,63 (doesn't rotate)

Harmonique 8,71

This means that the entire house is rotating, smooth and gradual as to be imperceptible from both inside and outside. The dome owner can direct the house to point in a particular direction by use of a remote control. The primary purpose of this rotating system is to make optimal use of the solar panels.

Harmonique 7,63

Harmonique 5,38

Among other benefits that the dome offers, we could mention the safety. Because of its aerodynamic shape and solid construction, the dome can withstand winds up to 175 mph (281 km/h) without sustaining significant damage, as well as an earthquake up to an 8 on the Richter Scale, which is quite impressive. Another advantage is that the dome is easy to build and the process is very quick. Since its design incorporated many prefabricated elements, the complete exterior of an average size Domespace can be built in a mere three months.

Transit 4,35

The domes are available in many sizes, the larger one featuring two living levels. Also, it's available in a non-rotating version called The Transit.{found on spotcoolstuff}

Casa en el Bosque, a contemporary design in Mexico

Posted: 06 Sep 2011 11:03 PM PDT

This beautiful residence is located in Valle de Ravo, Mexico. It’s a contemporary home and it’s was a project developed by Parque Humano.The house sits on a 3.500 sq meter plot and it’ s surrounded by varied and rich vegetation. The tall trees that surround the house are a great addition and they’ve been preserved for multiple reasons. First of all, they’re a piece of nature that is always welcomed. Also, they provide shadow and, most important of all, they protect the house from wind, rains and sun.

The owners and the architects working at this project decided to try to respect nature to the fullest. That’s why the design of the house was developed in a way that would allow the users to experiment both sides. The users have direct and intimate contact with the outdoors. This is possible because of the large windows and continuous design.

The design of the house had to be able to naturally integrate in the surroundings. The idea was to create a modern house but that would be able to blend it with the rest of the buildings. It didn’t need to stand out but rather to pass unobserved. However, even tough this is the case on the outside, the interior of the home is not that boring. It’s an elegant décor, with stylish pieces of furniture and nice color contrasts.
