Beautiful Home in Maryland – Crab Creek House

Crab Creek House is an amazing home located in Annapolis, Maryland, near Crab Creek, an estuary that feeds the Chesapeake Bay. Designed by Robert Gurney Architect this house is built on the foundation of a 1960s post and beam modern house.

The architects made an effort to keep the house in proximity to Crab Creek, but they had strict environmental regulations which prohibited enlarging the pre-existing footprint. The house was organized around a linear bar, clad in white stucco.

This lovely house was created around a central spine, from which additional space rise as independent volumes in either wood or metal siding. These spaces are also concentrated around the swimming pool. Moreover the architects tried to create a relationship between the house and environment, so they used floor to ceiling windows to bring the outside in and to flood the house in natural light.

The main living areas are oriented toward the water views, they have high ceilings and soft, neutral tones that create the feeling of a clean design. The architects also created an open floor plan that makes it look bigger. Moreover the materials used, such as white oak flooring and millwork, black slate, white marble, rusted steel and translucent glass, give it an elegant look.

Crab Creek House is a beautiful place to retreat to. It has stunning features like the fireplace, gorgeous views and last but not least a great connection with the environment.

Choosing a Contemporary Leather Sofa

When choosing a contemporary leather sofa there are a number of important decision you will need to take and in the following article we will look at the major ones which are material, style, size and colour.

Material

In deciding to purchase a leather sofa rather than a fabric one you will have done so for a variety of reasons. Leather sofas look great, can be very soft and comfortable, are relatively easy to maintain and will keep their good looks for very many years, though not all leather sofas are the same.

It is very important that you choose a sofa that is made of high quality leather. Leather comes in a number of grades. The softest leathers tend to be the most expensive, though sometimes they are not as tough as medium grade leathers which offer a compromise between softness and resistance to staining. You should avoid cheap low quality leather than is susceptible to drying out and cracking. If in doubt ask the sales person about the leather quality.

Style

Contemporary leather sofas are available in a large variety of styles. These range from the ultra-modern with sleek lines and minimalist looks, through to retro-styles that emulate furniture from a past era. Naturally there are many styles in between these two extremes. .

The style you choose should take into consideration the style of your living space, but it need not necessarily be dictated by it. Often it is considered chic to mix different styles, for instance the old and the new. Even if your other furniture is classical, with care you can blend in a contemporary leather sofa in such a way that both styles complement each other.

Size

When choosing the size of your sofa you need to exercise considerable care. If you are viewing a sofa in a showroom it is very easy to be misled. The large dimensions of furniture stores can make you think that the sofa is much smaller than really it is.

You should measure how much space is available; decide how many people are likely to sit on the sofa; and check the accessibility of the space, for instance whether the chosen sofa will fit through the door.

Often it is worth considering a corner sofa. These make the best of the space they occupy and can look particularly appealing. As many of them are modular, they can also provide an answer to accessibility problems.

Colour

Three-storey house by Pierre Hebbelinck

This unusually-looking house is the work of Pierre Hebbelinck from Atelier d’architecture. Actually, the house as not built from scratch. It was more like a make-over. The house sits on an irregularly shaped lot so everything has been a challenge. In order to make it suitable for the new owners, the architect needed to make some changes. He wanted to reveal the history and beauty of this traditional building so several drastic actions had to be taken.

For example, he started by striping down the building. The house had a beautiful brickwork that has been covered over the years with multiple layers. But instead of concealing it, Pierre Hebbelinck though it would be better to bring it back to light. He also wanted to reveal the true history and life of this structure so he only allowed windows to be added to the ground floor. On the upper floors, some thick cylindrical glass block have been added, allowing for interesting light effects both inside and outside.

There's also another interesting addition visible in the structure of the house. The new addition was a zinc structure containing the staircase that has a contrasting modern appearance. However, the house needed a modern touch. The combination actually looks good. The traditional architectural structure of the existing house needed a modern touch and that's exactly what it got.
