Relaxing weekend retreat in Chile by Mathias Klotz

Posted: 22 Aug 2011 10:34 AM PDT

This simple but beautiful house was designed in 1999 by Mathias Klotz. He designed it as a gift for Raul, a friend who needed a wheelchair-accessible home in Santiago. The budget for the project was only $80.000 so it was a challenge for the architect. Casa Raul was designed as a relaxing and quiet retreat, a simple place without sophisticated items or decorations.

Mathias Klotz tried to make that happen and he designed the house as if it was for him. What he didn’t know at that time was that a few years later it would really be his house. When the owner’s wife became too ill for weekend trips, they decided to sell the place and as Mr Klotz was examining the place he realized he wanted to have it for himself.

He bough the place for $200.000 and he made some changes, adding stone terraces and a pool and diving the larger bedroom into two separated rooms, for his two girls. He is planning to use this place as a weekend house and a place where he can teach his kids to sail. Casa Raul is a simple rectangular structure that resembles a giant wood crate. But it’s also a very quiet, relaxing and inviting place where the owner and his two children can enjoy some time together and have fun in the weekends.

How to add stairs to your deck

Posted: 22 Aug 2011 09:26 AM PDT

The deck in your house provides an additional open area. It is a great place to celebrate a small get together and even serves as a good place for relaxation. Now you can add stairs from the ground that leads directly to the deck. By doing this you can maintain the privacy in your room. For building stairs, you can always hire a carpenter. However, you can do it for yourself also. Though it will be bit tough but adding stairs to your deck all by yourself can be a good pass time if carpentry is your hobby. Here is a guide on building stairs by yourself.

 First, make sure you have all the necessary tools. The list includes the following – Drill, Handsaw, measuring tape, Shovel, Wheelbarrow, Trowel, Level, Framing square, Circular saw, Pea gravel, Fast-drying cement, Angle brackets, Deck screws and Masonry anchors. Now determine the number of steps needed from the ground to the deck and the height and width of the steps.

Mark the area on the ground from where you will start building the stairs. Ones you have done this, now is the time to prepare the concrete footer. After making, the footer cut the side of the stairs, which are also known as stringers. Once you are done with cutting the stringers, attach it to the deck and the footer. You need to be very careful while doing this. The foot of the stringer must rest on the concrete footer and the other end of the stringer must be attached against the face of the deck. After this, it is time to make the treads.  The tread width has to be 2′ more than the stair width. That means, the stair treads must overlap the stringers by 1″ on both sides. Once you are done with this, now is the time to make the railings. You finish this final task and you are ready with the stairs leading to the deck.

Building stairs by yourself can be a very tough and challenging job. You need to master at least the basic of carpentry. Moreover, stairs must be strong enough to support heavy weights. If you are not good in carpentry, it is advisable to hire an experienced carpenter to build the stairs for you. He can give it a better finish. And, if you are still willing to do it all by yourself, do get your friend or family member to help you.{first pic from here, pic 2 from here,pic 3 from here}

We all know that work can cause a lot of stress and it would be preferable to work from house. Keeping this in mind, we would like to show you a wonderful office interior design that we hope will inspire you to do the same for your employees.

Designed by Landau + Kindelbacher Architects for ICADE in Munich, Germany, this next office emphasizes the slogan ” quality in everything we do”. After they have changed the entrance hall, the cafeteria, the conference areas, the auditorium and the management areas they opened the door for a new fresh design.

The building presents an open floor plan which is put in light by the use of bright colors in the entrance hall. The architects used wood, natural stone and Corianas in order to give it a natural, warm feel. The design is kept throughout the entire place, even the elevators are lined with natural stone. Furthermore, a strong Bordeaux red was chosen for the carpets and leather coverings and this gives the place some flavor. Another great feature is the enclosed case for the auditorium, this creates an elegant look.

The ICADE building is now a great and inspiring place to work. It is elegant and natural, it has style and quality.{found on contemporist}

Space seems to always be a problem. We never have enough space and we always want more. Obviously, we can't do that so we have to work with what we already have. In most cases this means a small apartment. But there's no need to be sad or angry about that because there are some very clever ways to turn that small space into a very efficient and cool space that all your friends would be jealous at.

This tiny apartment by Normal Projects, in Manhattan is the perfect example. As you can see there's not a lot of space in there. However, that tiny place manages to be very comfortable and to be able to adapt according to the user's needs in no time. It's all about that eye-catching closet that seems to take a lot of space. It's just a closet and it gives more than it takes. That closet is a place to store cloths, a bed, a great storage space and it can even act as a home office. It's not a magic closet, just a well-designed one.

When you're not using any of those things, just close the doors and you have a very airy and welcoming room. Open it up and you'll be surprised how efficient it can be. After seeing this apartment some of you might want to trade it for their larger version. You can just use your creativity to make your own apartment more efficient and to find ways of saving space.

Coutume Interior design Cafe by CUT Architectures

Posted: 22 Aug 2011 01:56 AM PDT

Developed in 2011, this project was the first Coutume Cafe in that area. It’s located in the center of Paris, France and it’s an unusual project because it combines a roastery and a coffee place, which is not something you see every day. This 90 sq meter project was developed by CUT Architectures in collaboration with Benjamin Clarens & Yann Martin architects.

The idea was to create a place were people can go to enjoy the best coffee in Paris as well as a selection of fresh and organic food. It’s not a common combination as people usually go to a coffee place whenever they want to chat with a friend or to simply enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning, and they go to a restaurant when they want to eat. Now you can have them both in the same place.

The interior design of this place is a typical Parisian interior, with high ceilings, moldings, columns and an old shop door, together with plain oak tables and new oak flooring. Inside there’s also a laboratory featuring white square tiles. Grid lighting, stainless steel, industrial plastic curtains and laboratory glassware. It seems like an inviting place, with a variety of offers and a great place to eat and chat. Sp whenever you’re in the area, make sure you make a stop there.{found on archdaily, and pics by David Foessel}

A Modern Penthouse Located 420 West Broadway in Soho

Posted: 22 Aug 2011 12:35 AM PDT

Is there anyone who does not like penthouses or who has not imagined how it is to own one? I think the one in the picture is beyond imagination or exceeds expectations. Seeing this penthouse located in Soho, New York, on 420 West Broadway, you would not think it was sculpted from raw warehouse space because it looks too good to be true.

The entire credit rests with the designer, Nico Ransch of UK-based Studio Architeam. Probably the most successful result is the dramatic double height living room with the glass enclosed viewing garden open to the sky. The construction was built on three levels, with three private terraces, every place being landscaped.

The kitchen fits into the same pattern of a wide space, elegant in its black and white tones and modernly equipped. Every room is an example of modernity, elegance and harmony, no matter it is the bedroom, the bathroom or the outdoor living room. Every corner of this wide universe is an expression of perfection!

The largest terrace is the one including a complete kitchen and an outdoor living room. The double height living room is very large, providing space for all your friends and family at the same time; it is a wide-open space in shades of black and yellow, with splashes of brown and orange from place to place. The pieces of furniture and the decorative objects create a special atmosphere that makes you feel comfortable; everything seems to be widespread, from the sofas, the large table and the fireplace. Listed for $16 million.
