Meguro Office in Tokyo by Nendo

Posted: 11 Aug 2011 09:40 AM PDT

A very interesting and Unusual design can be seen at the Meguro Office. It’s located near the Meguro River in Tokyo and it was designed by Nendo. What’s particularly interesting about this office building is its interior design. It’s contemporary and simple but in the same time it’s unlike anything you’ve ever seen, especially in a office building.

The most interesting detail are the walls that separate the offices. In fact, there are no walls and we know it. They have been replaced with a sort of decoupage that resembles a piece of cloth held up between two hands. The texture and the look is not the same of course but the inspiration is very visible. The idea was to create an interactive space where the barrier between open and closed spaced is thin and can be easily removed. In order to enter or leave an office you just need to walk over the walls.

It’s not a design that offers a lot of privacy but it’s modern and even fun. It’s a different perspective and I’m sure it’s a lot more pleasant and fun to work in such a place. And for those who want more privacy, there are some offices that are enclosed with some sort of plastic curtains. This reduces the noise and creates a more private space and, in the same time, it doesn’t completely separate the office from the rest.

Unique Transformation in France – Le Royal Monceau-Raffles Paris Hotel

Posted: 11 Aug 2011 08:08 AM PDT

Ready for its final curtain call Le Royal Monceau-Raffles Paris is a luxury hotel, redesigned by Philippe Starck. The extremely elegant hotel has re-oped after a two year transformation looking unique and majestical.

The public areas take you back to the 30s, which was a celebration of the French art de vivre. On the other hand, the rooms, all 149 of them, are inspired by the 40s and 50s. The room designs were inspired by the award-winning author and statesman André Malraux. Moreover, when staying here the guests can feel at a creative friend’s home due to the private photograph collection, acoustic guitar, books dedicated to art, a pearl necklace, a writer, a dandy, everything an artist would love and need.

The hotel has a lot of interesting and splendid features, that can make it your primary choice, such as floor to ceiling mirrored bathrooms, walk-in wardrobes, flat-screen TVs hidden in Louis XV-style cabinets and many more. Furthermore it offers a variety of five restaurants and bars for you to pick, a Clarins Spa, cinema, library and art gallery.

Le Royal Monceau-Raffles Paris Hotel has a lot to offer. It is unique, luxurious and chic, it has gorgeous features and lighting, interesting art pieces and the key to your dreams. What do you think?

Coughing Ashtray

Posted: 11 Aug 2011 07:21 AM PDT

I do not smoke, but I have some friends who do and also my husband. So I do have some ashtrays around the house for them in order to avoid watching them smoking and trying to find some place for the ash at the same time. But one of these days I managed to find this special ashtray that is very good for Halloween , but also for giving the smokers a strong scare that maybe will make some sense into their heads and will make them consider quitting smoking. I am describing here the funny ashtray that coughs and screams when it detects some movement next to it. The coughing ashtray is also shaped like a pair of lungs, which is very effective for the intention of giving them a scare.

The ashtray is red and white and its design is very realistic, as the lungs seem almost breathing. The motion sensors activate when the smoker makes a move over it and you can hear the pre-recorded cough and scream that will frighten your friend to death. Of course you need a battery for this or otherwise it will not work properly. It makes a great gift that will show your friends you care for their health and you can have it for $7.99.

Planet Coconut Aromatic Candle

Posted: 11 Aug 2011 06:54 AM PDT

It’s nice to come home and when you enter the door to be welcome by a particular scent that you associate only with your home. I know it sounds a bit Proustian, but I do associate every home with its scent. So every now and then I try to refresh the smell in my house by using different tricks like fresh flowers, aromatic plants and even a home refreshener. But if you want to combine good taste and a nice design with a nice smell, you can use the aromatic candles. They are beautiful and effective, too. And this particular Planet coconut aromatic candle is all the more special because it is made of a real coconut.

This colourful candle is hand made and original, as it comes directly from Bali, from the local trade people there. The candle holder and its base are both made of coconut shell and the candle is made of melted wax mixed with aromatic salts and poured inside. They used palm wax when making the candle and added a wick that is made of pure cotton so as to ensure 25-30 hours of burning. You can have it in different colours for €10.85.

Single family residence in Bangalore, India

Posted: 11 Aug 2011 06:07 AM PDT

The city of Bangalore has a more nonconformist history so it's not surprising to find such a house in that area. The House of Pavilions was built to accommodate three generations that are living under the same roof and was designed by Architecture Paradigm. This is a common practice in that area. Not everybody would agree it's healthy and peasant, but that's their choice. So given that fact, the house had to be designed in a way that would make everyone happy.

The final concept was an open structure where the line between inside and outside is very thin. A lot of glass has been sued for the large windows and glass walls. This allows the owners to admire and enjoy the beautiful landscape and the light to get in. The house is located on the edge of the city, which is a nice compromise. It offers more intimacy, the area is more quiet and you're still connected to the city.

The house is divided into private and public spaced. The public zone includes drawing, dining and kitchen areas whereas the private zone largely caters to bedroom spaces. It's a functional structure. The two zones are connected by a movement spine which flows to become the family pavilion in the private part of the house.

The drawing room and the spine or the space between the upper and ground level acting as a studio/ library space are connected by a glass encased bridge. This further increases the visual connection to the outside. The drawing, dinning and the two bedrooms at the lower level open out to the garden courts. So there's a very nice juxtaposition of open and closed spaces that work very well together.

Nowadays many of us we have installed simple square windows or sash and case windows. These windows are undoubtedly the simplest window solutions, but they can be boring at times. You will be pleased to know that there are various types of windows, which can make the significant difference to the look of your house and how you feel about your house.  Let me now share with you the different types of home windows you may select :

Jalousie windows – Also called louvers, jalousie windows were extremely popular in the mid century. These windows are basically types of glass shutter. They are made out of glass slats, which are set with the help of metal clips and can be opened or closed in unison. These windows are extremely affordable and thus, an ideal solution for closed rooms such as lounge, bedrooms and sun room.

Double hung windows – These are classic windows known to offer excellent ventilation. They are made out of outside upper sash, which slides down and inside lower sash, which slides up. The best feature of this window is that the top can be opened while the bottom remains closed. You can practically install them anywhere in the house.

Bay windows – Bay windows impart a peaceful three-dimensional feel to a house has they feature more than three sections of windows, which are joined in a curve form. The large middle section of the window is usually fixed, whereas the side windows open up in the casement style.

Awning windows – Awning windows are great solutions for bedrooms and other areas where privacy is desired. These windows comprise of a glass sheet which is hinged at the top and swings outside. The most significant feature of these windows is that they can be opened slightly as required for ventilation. As a result, they are usually installed in the form of a column above the large patio doors for airy interiors.

Picture windows – Picture windows are large fixed windows offering unobstructed and amazing view of the outside and a sense of richness and luxury to the house. These are usually ideal for locations where ventilation isn't a major concern. Installing them high on walls of hallways and dark rooms shall bring the perfect required lighting in the room.{pic from vintageseattle}

The Most Attractive Headquarters by Craft 312 Studio

Posted: 11 Aug 2011 03:37 AM PDT

Headquarters usually make you think about quality, progress on one side and prestige and identity on the other. What Craft312 Studio designed for Koza Holding Headquarters perfectly fits this pattern. The Headquarters is located in Ankara, Turkey and was divided into compartments, the common ones being the entrance, information area, offices, studios and the less common: the inner garden, which seems to exist in order to make you forget that you are at work.

The large reception desk seems to be a contemporary expression of the granite and wooden panels that sustain this horizontal skyscraper. If the corridors are dominated of brown shades, the offices, which are open to the inner garden, use one widely appreciated aspects: day light. The entire design, the lines that give that feeling of continuity, every little detail constitute an approach to ecology that makes realize how all the details were carefully thought and planned.

Probably the most appreciated part of the entire headquarters is that of  the inner garden and the cafe in the interior where everybody can have a break, relax, socialize and forget about stress or noise. The theme of a “garden office” is the most beneficial element someone could think about and the water curtain seems just a dream. The internal garden offices, the workstations and all the facilities provided by this place meet all the needs of today’s modern offices. The ecological materials, the light, the appropriate working conditions, the contemporary but pleasant environment, everything in this space stand for comfort and perfection.

Delicate Zoie Planter by Helen Kontouris

Posted: 11 Aug 2011 02:40 AM PDT

Named after the Greek "Zoê ", meaning "life", this planter is an homage to nature and all its living things. Created by Australian designer Helen Kontouris, the Zoie planter has a very graceful and delicate design. It’s a versatile piece as it can be used both indoors and outdoor, as long as it’s in a protected area.

The planter has a modern look and a somewhat abstract design. It features delicate curved lines and an overall graceful figure. It’s a very nice combination of functionality and aesthetic appeal. It only comes in white but in this case it’s not an inconvenient. The neutral white colors allows the plant to show its true beauty, capturing all the attention. Furthermore, since the color is not an important aspect, the actual design becomes more eye-catching. The planter is designed to accommodate small plants. However, this is the only restriction that the piece imposes. You can feel free to choose any plant you want. Just be sure to take good care of it.

Because of its simple design and graceful shape, the Zoie planter can be incorporated in almost any kind of décor. It would look best in a modern environment but don’t let this remark influence your decisions. Place it inside to add some color and freshness to your home or outside where it can adapt to the environment. Just make sure it’s in a protected area.
