Wintergreen Montain Cabin by Balance Associates Architects

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 10:17 AM PDT

Every once in a while, we all feel the need to go somewhere private, somewhere in the middle of nature where we can relax and clear our mind. We usually look for a cabin where we can spend a few relaxing days with out loved one or with friends and family. But there's also another option: to build your own private cabin where you can go whenever you feel the need to.

Here's a very nice example of such a structure. It's located in Methow Valley, Washington, USA and it was designed by Balance Associates Architects. The cabin features a very simple and authentic look and it's also very cleverly divided so that everyone can enjoy their time spent there. The private and public areas are divided in a very functional way. There are basically two primarily shapes that form this cabin.

The first floor is where all the living areas can be fond. The public areas of the living, dining and the kitchen feature large windows and a lot of glass so it's quite open and allows the users to enjoy the beautiful landscape. The private areas are more intimate. The windows are smaller and they feature lower ceiling heights. Also, the seem more massive.

It's a very functional cabin, well designed, taken into consideration all the factors and all the needs of those who might spend their time there. It's located in a very beautiful area and the views are quite spectacular.{pics by Steve Keating Photography}

Minimalist Umbrella Stand by Eva Schildt

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 10:12 AM PDT

It’s raining outside and, as usual, I am looking for my umbrella and also for a place where to put it once I’m home with the water dripping from it. Yes, I know, there are certain things you only notice when you need them and the umbrella stand is one of them. It seems to stand in the way the rest of the time. Any way, having rain in mind I found this Minimalist Umbrella Stand by Eva Schildt and I thought I should share.

The umbrella stand is very simple, yet suggestive and you immediately notice the umbrella shape in the hallway. It is made of lacquered metal and is pretty sturdy, so it will support the weight of more umbrellas placed there. It is coloured in light blue and has an artificial sponge at the base in order to absorb all the water dripped from the umbrella. It is 2′ 4″ high and you can have it now for $179.

Eiffel Tower Measuring Souvenir

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 09:50 AM PDT

Every time you go some place new and interesting like a foreign country or famous city you bring souvenirs. For example I collect fridge magnets from all the places I visit. But there are a lot of other souvenirs or maybe some special things that remind you of a certain place. Paris is the city of love but if you want to choose a landmark for it, most people would choose the Eiffel Tower. It is very easy to recognize thanks to its unique shape and structure. That is why the designers Ana Mir and Emil Padros imagined a special Eiffel Tower souvenir for the kids room.

It is actually a vinyl poster with the Eiffel Tower drawn on it and which has some grades that show the height of the kids if they stick their back against the wall on the poster. This poster get stuck to the wall and you can use markers to note the date when you measure your kids and this way you will see their evolution in height in time. You can purchase it now for $96.

Moon Retro Armchair

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 09:16 AM PDT

Every once in a while you notice the same tendencies in fashion (any kind of fashion, not only clothes, but also in furniture) as they were twenty or thirty years ago. People like old-fashioned style over again, only add some features and call the new style “retro”. Just like mini skirts were in top in the 70s but also in the 90s, you will notice some furniture that was considered hot in the seventies and is still considered chic. One very good example is the Moon Retro Armchair. It is a very cool armchair because it has a simple, but very fashionable shape and colour, designed by To Mike, founder of Object Design Studio.

Even though the look of this armchair is really retro, it is made thanks to very modern methods. It is compact but lightweight and it is obtained of a moulded glass fiber. It has a glossy finish in order to look great and stylish and it is available in many colours like red, black, orange and grey. It is highly resistant and is not affected by weather , so you can use it both indoors in your living room, but also outdoors on the terrace or in the patio. It is ergonomic and easy to clean and you can have it for £439.00.

Lovely DIY Outdoor Cake Stand

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 08:40 AM PDT

My husband like many of us loves sweets and today he asked to prepare a cake. His desire made me think of this lovely DIY Outdoor Cake Stand.You can decorate your outdoor space with this rustic piece of furniture which will fit perfectly the natural surroundings.

Here are the materials you need this DIY Outdoor Cake Stand : a cross-cut wood plaque (round or oval), a cross-section of a tree limb   (Make sure the top and bottom are parallel), Titebond Ultimate wood glue (or similar extra strong wood glue), a large wood clamp.Take your tree limb section and wipe the cut surface clean.  Put a generous amount of extra strong wood glue on the surface.

Place the limb section in the center of the back side your wood plaque and press down firmly.  Wipe away any excess glue with a clean, damp cloth.

Place the two joined pieces in a wood clamp and let dry for at least one hour.   If you do not have a wood clamp, you can stack a few heavy books on top of your pedestal until it is dry.

Use your pedestals to display cakes and desserts or use as a base for a centerpiece.   If you want to place food directly on the wood surface, coat it first with a food-safe wood sealer.  If you would like to keep the wood it is natural color, place a piece of parchment paper beneath your cake or dessert.{found on oncewed}

Why Should I Paint my Living Room Yellow?

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 07:30 AM PDT

Many people, including myself, prefer white walls for all the rooms in their apartments or houses and this is for different reasons. But sometimes it is a great idea to choose colours and paint the walls of your living room in a certain way in order to enhance a certain feature, some furniture or simply because you like it. Not to mention the fact that certain colour combinations can really lift up your mood. So today I will try to answer the question in the title: “Why should I paint my living room yellow?“. First of all this colour gives you the impression of light and warmth and a room painted yellow seems larger and brighter. So if your living room is a bit smaller than you would like it to be, paint it yellow and combine this pale yellow with white for the best effect.

Yellow can be a colour that will help you create a merry look for your living room, but you will have to combine it with string colours like red, orange, black or blue. Just make sure you do not use too make strong colours in this combination because it can be tiring for the eyes, especially if there are kids around the house. Look at the above picture and you will have some idea a good combination.

Yellow is a very good colour if you want to arrange your living room with wooden furniture. The furniture looks great against a yellow background, especially if it is wooden and black or dark brown. So maybe you and I should consider painting the walls yellow next time we re-arrange the living room.

Haus Project from Derlot

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 06:49 AM PDT

Designers, just like all the other artists have different sources of inspiration for their works, some of them being absolutely fascinating and having apparently no connection with the thing they inspired. So is the case with this incredible project called “Haus” meaning “house”, of course, that was designed for Derlot, an Australian company.

This is a kind of portable house that is made for cosy talks with your friends and loved ones, a kind of cubicle that is offering you intimacy within the huge space of a restaurant or a hotel lobby or a Mall. This is the Haus project and I love the design, as it seems like an open house with two benches opposite each other a a small table in the middle.

The designer, Alexander Lotersztain, admitted he was inspired by the kids story called “Three little pigs” where the pigs had to build houses for themselves and each house was brought down by the Big Bad Wolf. Well, these houses are not that fragile and unstable, but they are small and made for a person or two most. However, they are not meant to be inhabited permanently, but only on occasions and for a short period of time.

Here are some beautiful pictures of this “Haus” interior that were made by the art photographer Florian Groehn.

The two new Rizon Jet Lounges and FBO-VIP Terminals by SHH

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 06:01 AM PDT

SHH had to design the two new Rizon Jet Lounges and FBO-VIP Terminals in London, England. The project was complicated and very complex. The client asked for a "a six star hotel reception with a comfortable lounge feel". And indeed, this place looks extremely comfortable and pleasant to be in. Clients are invited to spend more time in there by the multitude or services and high quality look.

There’s a strong emphasis on comfort and this is visible anywhere you look. The main space is a double-height volume divided into zoned lounges and a variety of privacy levels. The passengers first arrive at the west end of the hangar and are met by doormen in top hats and tails and a valet parking service. Then their luggage is immediately taken away and they can enjoy their favorite foods and TV programmes. The atmosphere is very relaxing and pleasant. The lighting system is adaptable and during the night the light becomes more gentle and intimate.

Every lounge area has a distinctive look. Lounges five and six were conceived for those who want to spend more time there and who also have children in their company so there are Wii and Playstation consoled available. There’s also a contral coffee table with crayons and coloring books, reading books and board games, as well as a blackboard and chalk. Overall, it’s a very welcoming space where everyone can feel good, from families with children to those with business interests.{found on archdaily}

DIY Spice Rack

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 04:44 AM PDT

Kitchen is a place where you have a lot of equipment and all sorts of things that will make you get a delicious meal. Here you will need to organize yourself in order to find the things you need at the right moment and some racks and supports will be very useful to arrange all your kitchenware.

When you start cooking you need to know where you can find all your ingredients and from where you can take all the equipment that you need for your recipe.A special place will be reserved to the spices. They are usually the magic ingredients or the cooker's secret for a tasty meal.

Now you have the opportunity to create your DIY Spice Rack where you may arrange your favorite spices.You will be able to create a simple multi-level spice rack for 30 jars made of stripped pallets. The process of stripping is not very complicated. Basically, you saw all the cross-boards in the center so they are easier to pry off. After prying the boards off, the next step is removing the nails from all of the boards using a hammer.

In order to make wood planks looks better you need to smooth them with the electric planer. After that you need to make several boards and fix them together using screws.{found on d.i. wine & dine.}

Ribaldo: sofa with built-in storage and display shelf

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 03:55 AM PDT

When it comes to choosing furniture for our home, we are no longer impressed by the usual designs, the standard pieces that have nothing to make them distinguishable from all the others. We are usually searching for something not so out of the ordinary but that still has something special, a detail that makes it stand out. Ribaldo is one such piece of furniture.

Ribaldo was designed by Vittorio Prato and it's a sofa like any other one. However, it has something that makes it special. It has a built-in storage space. Actually it's the base or platform on which the sofa stands that is a little longer than it should on one side. On the remaining space a storage space has been improvised. It's not much and it comes in very handy. The space is divided in three sections and you can place there books that you might read while relaxing on the sofa or maybe other items like the remote control, so that you always know where to find it.

Another very useful detail is that the small platform incorporated in the additional storage space can also be used as mini coffee table. It comes in very handy when you want to enjoy a drink and you need a place to put it on. I could definitely use that additional space.
