Hanging Houses of Cuenca – Spain Posted: 09 Aug 2011 10:17 AM PDT Cuenca is a city in the central part of Spain and it has nothing out of the ordinary except the Hanging houses. These famous buildings are famous all over the world and tourists come to see them because they seem to be literally “hanging” from the cliffs tops. They were built directly from the cliffs and the view is spectacular. Nobody knows for sure the exact moment when they were built, but it was some time between the thirteenth and the fifteenth century. They were rebuilt in the twentieth century because there were only three of them left and they were already considered a landmark of the place.
The hanging houses were built in Gothic style and they have a richness of details of wood on the inside. But the exterior entranceway belongs to the Renaissance style and this makes them all the more interesting. As most Spanish houses in the past had a name, these three houses have some very nice names: one is called The Mermaid House and the other two are The houses of kings. The latter ones are now housing the Museum of Spanish Abstract Art and the lonely one on the left is turned into a restaurant. I guess you must not be afraid of heights if you go there. |
A Simple, Suitable Villa by Sluijmer & Van Leeuwen Architects Posted: 09 Aug 2011 09:40 AM PDT Usually simple things are more appreciated, no matter it is a simple way of regarding a certain situation or a simple object. If we refer to Villa Horatiuslaan, then we can talk about simplicity at high levels and good taste. Located in Utrecht, Netherlands, it was designed by the Dutch Sluijmer & Van Leeuwen Architects. A few words are enough to sum up the entire characterization of this house in an appropriate manner; these words would be clean and simple lines in a charming environment. The building was divided into two floors, each room having wide glass windows, which provide a great view over the surrounding landscape, but also balconies and a special place for the relaxing moments at the end of a day. The interior keeps the same air of simplicity that makes you feel welcome; the open space of the living room fits perfectly in the pattern.
The blue chairs and the brown table are the expression of simplicity, while the kitchen, which can be seen from the entrance provides the perfect place for the specific household activities, having everything you might think of in the most appropriate atmosphere. The surrounding area completes the entire space with a dream corner, where you can relax in the sun or spend your time with your friends under the trees. If we have the loved ones close and a home in which we feel cozy, we see things quite different, from a better perspective. |
Posted: 09 Aug 2011 09:37 AM PDT Lanterns used to be the means of having light into your home long ago. But ever since the invention of electricity, lanterns were used only occasionally, in remote areas where you could not have electricity like in caves, mountain cabins and other similar locations. Well, even if their golden age was during the Gold fever or so, some lanterns can still be used for bringing in a country look to your house. However, they are now a bit changed, because they are turned into lamps. For example this Iron lantern lamp is a combination of an electric lamps with the design of a classic lantern and, I must admit, the result is remarkable. This nice lantern lamp is a lantern with a lampshade on top which has a light bulb inside. It is available in black or red finish and has a round handle and a vented top. If you like what you see, you can have it for $59.99. |
Unusual floral chandelier by Nicole Hollis Posted: 09 Aug 2011 09:05 AM PDT If you're looking for an impressive and stunning accessory to decorate your home with, we found the perfect item for you. It was designed by Nicole Hollis and it's described as a floral "chandelier" although it doesn't have much in common with the lighting structure. It's a stunning piece of art that would definitely impress anyone who sees it. It's perfect for living rooms of hallways where it can be a central piece and inevitably a focal point of attention for the guests and not only. If you like nature and flowers, you'll definitely love this piece. As you can see, it's made from a lot of different flowers and plants that have been put together to form this astonishing creation. It's a hanging piece that adds color and freshness anywhere you place it. As you might have guesses, the flowers are faux. It wouldn't have been practical at all to use real flowers since they only last a day or maybe too in the best case scenario. The flowers would be dead by the time you get to hang them in your home.
So if you want to impress, this is the way to do it. It's subtle but yet extremely eye-catching and it's a great substitute for real plants. They look quite real to me. It's a very beautiful piece of art, a modern decoration suited for those who want to add some color and freshness to their home and that also want something that would last.{found on flickr} |
Posted: 09 Aug 2011 07:53 AM PDT Offices are places where you will certainly find all kinds of papers, more or less important. But they all need to be stored and the person responsible for this must know exactly where to find them in an instant. And if some of these papers are very important and shouldn’t be seen by all the people having access in that particular office, then they need to be secured under key. So the most sensitive idea is to purchase a very strong piece of furniture that can be locked and that cannot be forced open easily. That would be the vertical metal cabinet. The vertical positioning is very useful for space saving and all the drawers offer you the possibility to use a system of classification. This cabinet is sturdy and made of metal and it is perfect for storing letter sized files. The heavy steel construction offers security and the cabinet has some great aluminum handles and label holders. The cabinet in the picture is black, but it is available also in putty and grey. You can have it now for $330. |
Choose Loft Bed To Maximize Space Posted: 09 Aug 2011 07:28 AM PDT The fact is undoubtedly undeniable that it is very hard to decorate a small bedroom efficiently to maximize space. Here's a solution that every house owner would like to introduce in his room – Loft beds. It is compact and looks attractive, is extremely space saving and allows multiple utilization of the premium space. Perfect for rooms with limited space, loft beds are unquestionably an excellent way to introduce functionality in the room in an efficient manner which no other furniture can. Choosing a loft bed for a room offers you versatility and allows you to maximize space. Introducing a loft bed as opposed to the typical bed opens up the room and creates extra space. The bed goes off the floor, and extra space is created underneath the bed. Needless to be mentioned but this simply adds extra footage to the room. The extra space can be used to arrange anything ranging from a casual seating area to a study section, for which free space was not available earlier. You may even introduce free hanging shelves underneath a loft bed and create storage solutions, which may be used for storing daily utility items or simply for expanding a collection.
You will be delighted to know that loft beds are now available in a wide variety of styles and finishes. You may select metal loft beds to offer the room a modern and clean appearance, or simply settle with loft beds made out of classic wood such as pine, cherry or oak for a sense of richness. With so many benefits offered by loft bed, the only question left for asking yourself is – why should you settle for typical beds when you have the opportunity to maximize the space and enjoy the convenience of a loft bed? |
Alessi Mediterraneo Toothbrush Holder by Emma Silvestris Posted: 09 Aug 2011 06:58 AM PDT I don’t know why I associate bathroom with water. I mean I paint my bathroom in blue and unconsciously I choose only bathroom items that are connected in some way with the sea or the ocean. I guess it’s all that water that’s the common feature. Any way, I was looking for some marine themed bathroom accessories when I found this interesting Alessi Mediterraneo Toothbrush Holder by Emma Silvestris. I loved it on the spot because it seems to be made of coral. Well, not exactly the actual animal that lives in the warm seas, but the design is very suggestive and makes you think of coral, of Mediterranean Sea and weather. Emma Silestris, the creator of this toothbrush holder design is actually a jewelry designer, but this only helped her design such stylish and nice accessories. The item can be mirror-polished or made of some red epoxy resin, but still beautiful. Even though the primary destination for the product is to hold your toothbrush, you can also use it for storing different small items in the office. If you like it, you can have it now for $42 plus shipping. |
Small Space, Big Style – The Barcode House Posted: 09 Aug 2011 06:49 AM PDT Barcode House is a beautiful contemporary home located in Washington DC and designed by David Jameson Architect. Its name comes from an exterior design detail which consists of a series of horizontal lines which resemble a huge commercial barcode. This amazing residence is a mixture of old and new, heavy and light. Due to the lack of site space the house is vertically oriented as a solution. Moreover the architect used a lot of floor to ceiling windows in order to create a light, airy space and also gave the rooms the sense of grandeur.
As you can see throughout the entire house the color palette is made out of neutral colors, white and grey which make the space feel bigger. Furthermore every room is furnished in a way that gives the place a great sense of openness and it makes the most out of the minimal. The Barcode House is a highly functional, high tech and a very high on style home. It has multifunctional, multitasking kitchen, equipped with beautiful stainless steel appliances. This residence is surely noticed in the neighborhood. It is simple, gorgeous and has a clean design. This house has the perfect balance and becomes a very modern element, a statement of beauty amongst its neighbors. |
Modern Fruit or Vegetable Basket from Claesson Koivisto Rune Posted: 09 Aug 2011 06:28 AM PDT If you want something post-modernist and impressive for your home in matters of fruit basket, you might think of this unique piece of work designed by Ola Rune from Claesson Koivisto Rune company. It is a fruit basket, but you can also use it to store vegetables, too or maybe as a house decoration when it is empty. It is now produced by Cappellini . It is made of thin laminated strips of plywood that bend and come together to be glued on the bottom. The design of this fruit basket is pretty interesting as it is not static like all other similar fruit baskets, but it expands when you place the fruit inside and also comes back to the original position when empty. If you ask me I think it looks just like the flower of a lily or maybe a wooden cup kings used to drink from , only stripped. The fact that it is made of many parts with plenty of space in between them makes the air free to circulate, which is great for the fruit inside, as it does not get bad easily. The product is available in beech plywood – natural, white or black. |
