| Do-It-Yourself Dishwashing Detergent Posted: 16 Jul 2011 09:47 AM PDT Everywhere you go you can hear people talking about eco-friendly products and about protecting the environment. I agree that the change needs to be done with every single person, but I did not pay too much attention until I stayed home with my small kids and I developed a very annoying allergy to dish detergents. That is when I realized that the products used by people in the past for cleaning the dishes were a lot less harmful from this point of view. So , believe it or not I asked my grandma to tell me one of her old DIY dish washing detergent recipes and I experimented.
Of course there are many such recipes, but most of them use baking soda and borax as main ingredients. These ingredients are mixed in equal quantities and sometimes you can add some liquid dish soap for a better mix. If you want some really white and shiny dishes you can also add a spoonful of vinegar in the rinse compartment. An interesting recipe uses 1/2 cup citric acid and one of kosher salt mixed with a cup of borax and one of baking soda. Some people also use lemon juice instead of vinegar for rinsing. Any way, I can assure you this is perfectly safe to be used when you hand wash the dishes and even in the dishwasher. |
| Posted: 16 Jul 2011 08:37 AM PDT The weather is so fine now that it’s summer and you almost don’t want to go inside the house if you have a nice outdoor area like a garden or a patio or even a terrace. The houses or the apartments are hot like microwave ovens unless you have AC so it’s a real pleasure to stay outdoors where the gentle wind breezes on your skin. Any way, I saw some of my friends moving their living room areas outside and I liked the idea.
So you can meet all your friends there, in this specially arranged outdoor area that you can design yourself. Of course there are a few adjustments to be made since the furniture will stay out all summer, so it’s better to be weather resistant like rattan or wicker or any other similar material. You will find this furniture easily in the specialized stores. Choose a sofa and a coffee table or maybe a round taller table with three or four comfortable armchairs of a colour you like and then arrange this special corner.
Use pastel colours for the cushions if the furniture is black or dark and use some shade if you plan to stay there when the sun is up: a nice big umbrella or maybe some separating walls or some canvas walls. Of course if this outdoor living room is on your terrace or balcony you won’t need these shades and also if you have some big leafy trees around the garden providing enough shadow. Any way, here are three ideas you can get inspiration from. |
| Comfortable upholstered bathtub Posted: 15 Jul 2011 10:46 PM PDT Every now and then everyone feels the need to relax. And when there's no other possibility, we choose to take a long and relaxing bath. This helps us release the stress, relax our muscles and enjoy an activity that was meant to be intimate and personal. In order to increase the comfort, Italian designer Anika Elisabetta Luceri has created a very ingenious and surprisingly cozy bathtub.
This particular bathtub features simple lines, soft edges and an unusual upholstered finish. This makes the bathtub look more comfortable and unusually inviting. With a bathtub like this one it's guaranteed you'll be able to enjoy many relaxing moments in there. It comes in white and it features an elegant and sophisticated design, even though the design itself is rather simple. It looks sophisticated mainly because the bathtub itself has a more unconventional design, featuring two round edges instead of the usual straight lines. It's a small detail but it makes a difference.
The beauty of this bathtub is that it's extremely versatile. The upholstered finish allows it to be successfully included in any kind of bathroom. In a minimalist décor it would make a nice accent and it a more sophisticated one it would naturally blend in. It's a rare example of simple but yet luxurious pieces that often inspire elegance, more than those overdecorated designs that are supposed to be luxurious but are rather kitschy. |
| SKOJIG Pendant Lamp for Kids from IKEA Posted: 15 Jul 2011 01:59 PM PDT Clouds have always given me a feeling of comfort and dream and that is why I often associate them with dreams and sleep. I used to sleep in my grandparents garden after looking at the sky for hours and trying to figure out cloud shapes. And I guess that is the reason why all kids love clouds. So what could be more appropriate for the children room than a lamp with clouds on it? It is blue and attractive and a pendant model. It is also available in yellow, but it’s not that fun in this colour as it is in light blue.
To be honest it is a bit too heavy for my taste having 1.6 kilos, but it is beautiful. Furthermore it is made of a very resistant and tamper tested material (Polycarbonate plastic and polypropylene) that is totally safe for your child. Designed by Henrik Preutz this lamp is very funny and nice for the kids room and also very affordable, as you can purchase it from IKEA for just $24.99. |
| Posted: 15 Jul 2011 12:45 PM PDT The first impression the Burling Court Residence in Bethesda, Maryland makes, is that of an amazing contemporary house which definitely looks like a ship. The design is flawless and you keep that feeling until the end, after you have analyzed both the exterior and the interior.
The traditional front facade reminds of a colonial house, which was definitely inspired by nautical shapes; in fact, it has something from the bow of a ship, but in general, it provides large, fluid spaces that give unity to a family. It has a very beautiful look, which seems to spread peace all around and this matters the most. There is an obvious admiration for modern shapes, especially those of nautical inspiration; in general, the lines break away from the standard forms.
This house makes you smile and think about your own dream house: it has everything you might think of, when you imagine an ideal contemporary house: style, elegance, simplicity. Being a dream place, it must be surrounded by the perfect landscape and it certainly is. The interior is modern, in a perfect harmony of tones: green, grey, brown and beige and besides the modern furniture pieces, there are all sorts of decorative objects, which animate the atmosphere: the lamps, children’s paintings. Simplicity and good taste say enough from Shinberg Levinas. |
| Ingenious DIY House Numbers of Flower Pots Posted: 15 Jul 2011 12:17 PM PDT It is a nice thing to find a solution for a problem that helps you go out of the ordinary monotony and when you live in house you can do such a thing even from the entrance. More exactly, you can even use your house numbers.
These numbers just express your simple address but for a joyful touch of your house these numbers can be used in an optimistic way so they can send away their ordinary use.In order to get a new image of your house numbers you need: some terracotta flower pots of different size, some black spray paint, satin finish lacquer , vinyl house numbers and of course some good mood. You can involve all your family in this "business".
You take a flower pot; you paint it with some black spray paint, apply the number of the house and then add a layer of satin finish lacquer. In this flower pot you may plant any plant you would like and then you may put it near your house. Kids may choose their own flower pot with a number, they could plant here the flower that they love, they would take care of it, they would become attach to it and you will see them coming home impatiently at their favorite house number pot. Definitely the passers –by would turn their heads back and smile when they would notice these ingenious and beautiful house numbers.{found on thediyshowoff} |
