Sustainable House by Morris Partnership

Posted: 02 Jun 2011 10:18 AM PDT

Architectural firm Morris Partnership creates beautiful buildings, focusing their design on a grander scale of morals. The team tries to ensure that the environment is an element to be recognized and expressed. Such a house is the Hinterland Residence in rural Australia.

The architects tried to capture the environmental qualities of the site, such as expensive views of the dam, small shrub and grassland, and intimate views of eucalyptus. The house is composed of separate buildings for living, working and sleeping, just like the clients wanted. The building is also eco-friendly, it uses worm farm waste treatment, solar heating and hot water, cross ventilation and the cellar pantry draws cooled air through an underground chamber.

The house features different zones, separated by glazed slots, links and open spaces. The architect used materials that work both on the inside and outside. Moreover, when moving to another area you can see a disconnection between them. It has floor to ceiling windows that bathe the house in natural light and allows you to enjoy gorgeous views. The interior design is modern, yet minimalist, the accent leaning towards the exterior.

The style of the Hinterland House is not entirely unique, but Morris Partnership succeeded to create a higher standard home that pushes the definition of boundaries.

House O by Jun Igarishi Architects

Posted: 02 Jun 2011 08:40 AM PDT

House O is a very unusual residence. It was designed by Japanese studio Jun Igarishi Architects and it has a unique structure. When looking at the sketches you might even have the impression that you're watching an unfolded Rubik's cube or some sort of origami piece. That's because this house has a very original and clever design. It has several room that are dispersed in different directions but hey are still connected to each other. This allows the inhabitants to have a beautiful view regardless of the room they are choosing.

This means that, for example, the cooking area benefits of the beautiful view of the trees that can be admired from there and the living area has connection to the south. All the room face a different direction but they are all connected by a box-like structure placed in the middle. Giving the arrangement of the rooms, several semi-enclosed spaces are formed.

The living room even has a window facing such a space. It seems that the owners of this place have created their own little city. Overall, the whole structure looks very modern and simple. The design is minimalist on the outside and very elegant as well. All the geometric shapes go very well together, creating a labyrinth-like structure.

This is a very suggestive example of an unusual customized home. The beauty of designing your own home is that o have the liberty to choose every detail and to build it according to your personal preferences.

10 Beautiful Dining Room Design Ideas

Posted: 02 Jun 2011 06:16 AM PDT

The dining room used to be that room that was especially designed for you to have dinner there with your family. Well, not only dinner, but all the meals of the day, but dinner is the one giving the room its name. However, nowadays more and more people have combined this room with the kitchen creating a larger room destined both for cooking and dining.

That can be explained by the fact that many modern families have dinner out and also by the fact that families are not so large any more, so two or three people can easily have dinner in the kitchen rather than have a separate room just for this. Well, people have different tastes and ideas, so many have still kept the old-fashioned style of having a dining room, so here are 10 beautiful dining room design ideas.

Bennett Table & Napoleon® Chair Set available for 2513$.

Contrasts are good as they create diversity and do not let monotony make your meals boring and make you lose your appetite. That is why we suggest a nice dining room with white walls and a beige floor and table, but with black modern chairs and over sized lamps hanging over the dining table from the ceiling. Of course, you can always try the opposite, that is wooden walls and floor keeping the natural colour of the wood combined with a black rectangular simple table and white futuristic chairs molded in plastic. Add some white balls in the wall niches and a white hanging lamp and the picture is complete.

Outdoor String Lights with Sunflowers

Posted: 02 Jun 2011 03:17 AM PDT

Yesterday was the first day of summer and I felt like celebrating, so I wanted to throw a small party for the kids. Of course, they prefer these parties out, especially when the weather is fine because they can play and run and have fun without having to watch out for the furniture or other fragile things a person has inside the house. So we needed some outdoor lights that were supposed to be both funny and attractive for the kids and also affordable. And I have found these string lights for outdoors that are made of small light bulbs inside little yellow sunflowers.

They are nice and funny and the kids love them. The yellow colour of the flowers suggests summer and joy and the light is smooth ans gentle, perfect for a calm evening outdoors. Besides the fact that they are on sales and you can buy them for just $25.65 now on Amazon, they also work on solar energy. SO there is no need for you to have all kinds of wires all through the garden and connect them to a power supply , as they are recharged by small solar panels that are situated under the sunlight. The lights turn on automatically when it is dark and the rechargeable Ni-Cd AA battery  is included.

Interactive sculpture by Tomomi Sayuda

Posted: 01 Jun 2011 09:38 PM PDT

Oshibe, which in Japanese means stamen, is also the creation of Japanese designer Tomomi Sayuda. Basically, the interesting thing about this piece is that it operation on the principle of synaesthesia. The sculpture attemps to mesmerize you on multiple levels by exciting your senses. It's not such a revolutionary piece, but still it's very interesting.

Oshibe is an interactive lighting sculpture that also plays ambient sounds. As the designer declares, this project was inspired by eggs, plants, light and the moon. It's an odd combination when you think about it but if it works for her who are we to judge. As you can see the sculpture features multiple stamens and eggs. When you put eggs on stamens something unexpected happens: Oshibe plays tender ambient sounds and it also lights up. Each stamen plays a different sound. So the stamens are like a quire as the sounds change according to the number and positions of the eggs.

It's a very interesting piece that would look good in a modern home as a decorative and maybe also as a lamp. Since the sounds it plays are so tender, Oshibe could be a very efficient relaxation device. Whenever you feel stressed or tired, just find a comfortable position and take Oshibe with you. You're going to feel much better. You should try it.

How to Decorate Kitchen Combined with Living Room?

Posted: 01 Jun 2011 05:45 PM PDT

With property prices soaring high, open floor plan concept is gaining popularity as it is a cost effective option. The open floor plan concept is quite different than the typical room concept.  Living room, kitchen and dining space are often combined into a single space.  The concept undoubtedly makes the house appear larger and spacious, provided it is decorated properly. Needless to be mentioned but decorating an open floor plan is definitely tricky. You need to consider functionality and impact of every element before introducing it in the house.

Kick start the project by dressing the walls. The paint colors should be chosen carefully. It is not mandatory to select the same color for each area, but colors should complement each other. You can select colors from the same family to get a flow in the room. Alternatively, you may also select completely contrasting colors such as blue and green, fuchsia and yellow. Another interesting idea is to paint one area and wallpaper the other.

Generally, it is recommended to select identical window dressing for the entire area instead of selecting varied dressings for different areas. Using identical window dressing will pull the area together and make it appear as one space.

Furniture pieces incorporated in each area should be in alliance with each other. A contemporary entertainment will definitely not match with a traditional oak dining table as it will create sudden changes and break the flow. Make sure to choose the same material or wood, and the basic style of furniture for the varied furniture pieces.

Use lighting fixtures to define spaces and differentiate functions of each area. You may choose pendant lighting to hang over the kitchen countertop or island and opt for a rendezvous chandelier for the living area.

Introduce different types of accessories in both the rooms, which are connected by some mean or the other. For instance, if you have stainless steel pots hanging in the kitchen area, you may display an intricate stainless steel bowl filled with artificial flowers in the living area. Another example is to extend the colors. For instance, blue pendant lights in the kitchen area can be complemented with a blue throw over the back of the sofa placed in the living room.

CCPP – by Cochenko and Quatorze

Posted: 01 Jun 2011 03:22 PM PDT

CCPP – Chantier créatif de prévention partagée- is the product of a design collaboration between the Collectifs Cochenko and Quatorze. Basically this product is an instalation that will travel to schools and institutions in a drug awareness campaign comissioned by the French Ministry of Culture and MILDT. The project consists is the creation of a hallucinogenic space where the students will be entering in order to experience contrasting moments.

Only one person is allowed inside at the time and he or she can stay in there as long as he/she wants. The space is divided in three continuous rooms where the user will experience very different emotions: pleasure, repetition and awakening. As a person enters the first room, the door is shut behind him/her. He or she will enjoy the beauty and tranquility of a relaxing space with soft, crystalline music and subtle light. As the user enters into the second space, the surroundings are beginning to be closing in around him/her. The user is now deprived of direction and he will experience harsh sound and light combinations. In the last space the user is slowly brought into the reality and a numbing bass is growing through the body, encouraging the user to want to leave that space as quickly as possible. It must be a really intense experience.

Hopefully it will have a positive effect on those who are trying it and the campaigns will discourage young students to try drugs. It's a very creative campaign and hopefully it will be a success.

Refreshing ceramic bird bath

Posted: 01 Jun 2011 02:10 PM PDT

When spring first comes, the first noticeable thing are the birds that come back from other exotic places and their beautiful song that enchants our ears. Everybody loves birds, no matter how old or how friendly that person is. For those who enjoy watching these little creatures and listening to their beautiful song, Eva Solo has created this beautiful ceramic bird bath that can be incorporated in any garden, deck, terrace or other open space.

It's a very nice decorative piece that allows you to closely admire these beautiful creatures while still respecting their privacy and freedom. The structure is composed of a ceramic dish, a decorative water supply, all on a tall metal spike with rubber on the metal pole to stabilize the whole structure. The piece us very good-looking and simple and it's also frost resistant so you don't have to worry about it during the winter.

Eva Solo also designed other similar pieces like bird feeders or small bird houses. If you're a bird lover this is the designer you should work with. You can turn your garden into a very pleasant space where people and birds can peacefully coexist. It's not difficult at all and I'm sure the little cute creatures will be very thankful for your gesture as they will have a quiet place to relax, wash their feathers, drink some water or eat some seeds.
