Taiyuan Museum of Art by Preston Scott Cohen Posted: 01 Jun 2011 11:40 AM PDT Museums are a great source of knowledge. They are constantly contributing to our education by simply being there. Even though museums don't sound like fun, they can actually be very interesting. I actually visited one today and it was surprisingly interesting. Of course, no museum can be compared to the Taiyuan Museum of Art. This one is located in Taiyuan, Chna and it's a project designed by Preston Scott Cohen architects. In this case, the museum itself is something worth to be visited. It's a very modern structure of buildings with a futuristic design. The museum is actually composed of several independent structures that are connected together by a series of promenades. This is actually a very good idea. This design allows the visitors to either follow a predetermined path or to skip from one series of galleries to another. This way they can make their own choices, according to their interests and the amount of time they are willing to spend in there.
The museum also includes a bookstore, restaurant, library, education center and the administrative wing. The project started in 2007 and it was supposed to be finished in 2010 but it is currently still in progress, like many big projects that exceed the duration that has been previously established. Hopefully it's going to be finished soon. It seems very promising and, if it really looks like in the plans, it's going to be a spectacular museum.{found on archdaily} |
Out of balance stool by Thorsten Franck Posted: 01 Jun 2011 11:14 AM PDT If your purpose in the process of decorating your home is to create a strong visual impact using eye-catching designs, then this stool might be your type. However, this is not the most important aspect, especially considering the fact that you'll be living a long time in there.Created by the German designer Thorsten Franck, the "Out of balance" stool is definitely an interesting piece of furniture. The stool has a very unusual design. As the name says, keeping your balance on this stool might be a challenge. It has a playful design that is attractive at first but not so much later. The stool is built like egg shells with a weight at the bottom for balance. However, as interesting as it might sound and look, this is not the best choice for those who actually plan on using it. The stool is not that comfortable and this is a very important aspect. If this problem could get solved, then it would be a really cool design.
The stool was created using oak veneer and a special 3D forming technology. Other than the unusual shape, the design is rather simple. It has a quiet natural color, except for the colorful top where several tone of red are available. The stool was initially designed for rocking, sitting and relaxing. You might have fun rocking and sitting on this stool, but when it comes to the "relaxing" part you can just have fun trying because it's never going to happen. |
Posted: 01 Jun 2011 10:12 AM PDT LCD televisions have gained extreme popularity, and more and more people now prefer installing LCD televisions over the typical box type television. Besides assisting to free up desk space, LCD televisions also consume less electricity and are easy on the eyes too. However, like the other things of our homes, LCD televisions are also known to attract dust and dirt. Smudges, lint particles, ink markings and finger prints can destroy the beauty and function of the televisions. Henceforth, cleaning of a LCD TV is very important. Cleaning of an LCD TV has to be done very carefully. Employing the wrong kind of cloth and placing too much of pressure can scratch the screen and in severe cases, also burn off the pixels. So, the question which now emerges is how to clean an LCD TV?
Soft Cloth – the easiest, quickest and the most effective ways to clean an LCD TV is to employ a soft cloth. Try to find the softest cloth you can find, and gently wipe the display with it without putting any pressure at all. Paper towels may seem soft, but they can cause severe permanent marks on the display. Soft cloth designed for cleaning an LCD TV can also be found in the market easily. Cleaner – Cleaners can also be used effectively to clean LCD televisions. However, you should ensure to only use cleaners designed specifically for cleaning LCD televisions. As general household cleaners are known to contain ammonia, the display panel is sure to be damaged. The LCD TV cleaner is made of distilled water and little alcohol. If you do not want to purchase a LCD cleaner, you may try to use a little bit of water on the display panel to see if the build ups is getting removed. Alternatively, you may also add few drops of isopropyl alcohol to water to remove the grease builds caused from finger prints. Can of air – A can of air can also be used to blow out the accumulated dust particles from inside the television. However, you must ensure to never use any other probe besides can of air. The right way to use can of air is to hold it one inch away from the vent and blow out the collected debris. |
Fletcher Vaughan’s Stratospheric sculpture Posted: 01 Jun 2011 07:58 AM PDT New Zeeland is where this beautiful and unusual sculpture can be found. It's calls Stratospheric and it was created by New Zeeland designer Fletcher Vaughan's for the Brick Bay Sculpture Trail in Matakana. This unusual and gravity-defying structure is a very modern and elegant art piece. The sculpture is composed of 4 orb. Each orb is further composed of layers or strata of opaque, white Corian. Corian is a type of handmade marble mostly used for industrial products and a material that the designer is frequently using in its creations. The sculpture is very artistic and beautiful. It has a clean design with beautiful lines and a structure that defies gravity. Also, there's an unexpected detail that can be admired during the night. When the sun goes down, the luminous orbs are lit up creating a charming image.
Each sphere contains LED lighting that when switched on completely change the look of this sculpture making it even more interesting and impressive. As you can imagine, building this structure was not at all easy. It required a lot of time and precision in order to make it look so neat and beautiful. But it was all worthed at the end.Of course, the sculpture is most impressive at night when it lights up. Multiple colors and color combinations are available, creating contrasting and artistic images. |

Odd urban chair designs from Jimmie Martin Ltd Posted: 01 Jun 2011 04:15 AM PDT Chairs are usually not the most interesting or impressive piece of furniture from the house, but sometimes there are designers that like to change that. For example, the Jimmie Martin Ltd designs are nothing but unusual. The collection features several chair designs that share in common the odd shapes and especially the unusual prints that are definitely eye-catching and unexpected. The combination of urban prints and sophisticated lines is not very common but still, in some cases, it could be really interesting. The idea of combining very different styles and patterns is not that rare. The designers are always seeking to create unpredictable and unexpectedly interesting pieces that are able to enchant the customers. However, this is a very bold and odd combination. The chairs have a sophisticated design, with all those curved lines and aristocratic details that are usually seen in antique pieces. When combined with the urban prints the image is very strong and it takes a while to process it and only after that you can say if you like it or not. Personally I find it a little exaggerated, but still interesting. There are many prints to choose from. The funniest one is the dog that is cut in half and split into two pieces in two different chairs. I would honestly buy that one. In this case you would have to buy them both because there's no point in buying half a dog. |

10 Ideas for Your Home Office Design Posted: 31 May 2011 10:45 PM PDT More and more people have started working at home lately thanks to the technology development that allows them to work in a place and send all the information in real time in another place. I am referring here to jobs like computer programmer, editor, writer, painter and so on – any job that does not require your physical presence at your office and gives you the possibility to work from home. I know I worked at home for about four years, so you should consider my advice. First of all try to arrange your home office in a remote area of the house because you need focus and if you are some place near the kids room or near the entrance this can be really disturbing. If you live in a big house then you probably can find a room to use as your home office, but otherwise I suggest a part of the attic. If you arrange it to fit your needs, this can be the ideal place. Take a look at these 10 ideas for your home office design and you will see my point.
Since this is an office at home, that means you don’t have to contact your clients directly – face to face, so you can arrange your home office in a more informal way so that you can feel comfortable and fine, ready to work in a pleasant manner and place. So lose the tie and suit and also the rigid and impersonal office design and surround your work desk by family photos, paintings made by your children, flower pots and anything that can make you feel fine and enjoy your work there.
Try to place your desk near the window if possible because when you are a bit tired and want to be refreshed without moving from your chair you can relax a few minutes by simply enjoying the view outside and admiring the familiar picture of the home surroundings. Be creative and arrange your office as you like it and as you see fit because it’s a great opportunity to have this freedom.{source 1,and 2} |
Posted: 31 May 2011 09:40 PM PDT S. Michael Island, located in the Azore, is where this unusual, but very interesting house can be found. It's the creation of Portuguese designer Bernardo Rodrigues. The curved lines create a very beautiful image that, when seen from far away, resembles the wings of a flying bird. This private residence is a very beautiful, modern and stylish structure, one of the best when it comes to spending the holydays in an exotic location like the Azore. It has a modern design, with curved volumes and odd-shaped windows, but all the details contribute to the overall striking look. Since it's located on an island, it's natural to have to deal with a lot of rain and wind, and the curved and artistic wall was especially designed to protect against all these factors. The residence feature many glass walls that protect the inhabitants from all the rain and wind but still allow them to admire the amazing landscape.

Family friendly interior design Posted: 31 May 2011 07:23 PM PDT Designing and decorating a home to make it family friendly does not require more work and more money. All you need to do is take into consideration needs of every member of the family, and employ your creativity so that you can make your home look interesting and modern. Choose to install floating shelving units and shelves to a room in order to place the valuables out of reach from the children. Besides being very stylish, floating shelves will add a lot of dimensions to the room. You may also choose to place decorative elements such as show pieces and crystal vases on the floating shelves.
Make it a point to opt for machine washable slip covers for the couches, sofas and more, so that you can protect your investment and quick wash the covers whenever they get dirty. Slip covers are available in a wide variety of fabrics such as brushed or flat cotton, brushed velvet and poly blend fabrics. Lidded baskets may be employed in different parts of the home. These are good to look at, easily transportable and are excellent at hiding things. You may place a nice woven lidded basket in the living room for storing magazines, newspapers and other miscellaneous items. Children room is another area where these baskets will provide a significant assistance to hide the naught sins.Baskets can also be introduced to the kitchen area and balcony. The living room is another vital part of the house which requires careful consideration. As you are trying to make your home family friendly, it is recommended to place a decent size television in the living room. This shall allow the whole family to collect in the living room and spend a gala time together. However, ensure that the television can be seen from different angles of the room. Another factor to be considered in this regard is the seating space. Long couches and sofas featuring pull out bed are ideal for family homes. You can easily pull out the beds to increase the seating capacity of the room. Also consider spreading a mat on the floor instead of an expensive rug so that you can allow the kids to sit on the mat and indulge in various activities without having to worry about the mat getting spoiled. |
