Glass Igloo in Kakslauttanen Hotel in Finland

Posted: 29 May 2011 10:07 AM PDT

When you hear about Finland you think of Santa Claus home and Aurora Borealis. Of course there are a million other things to see there, but these two are the most famous ones. Any way, the polar nights are known to be really cold , so it’s pretty hard to stay out and enjoy the beautiful show of the skies, even if you are equipped with fur coats and thick clothes. That is precisely why some smart guys from Kakslauttanen Hotel in Finland had a brilliant idea: to build a glass igloo that will allow the tourists inside feel warm and comfortable and at the same time enjoy the Northern Lights all night long.

The inside of the igloo is a luxury one and you have everything you want there: a toilet, luxury beds and … the most important thing – a normal temperature. The glass the igloo is made of is pretty special because it is supposed to let you see outside without getting a crust of ice or snow on it. So the glass is thermal and thick enough, standing temperatures of -30 degrees Celsius without a problem. Great idea if you ask me.

All houses have furniture in them because furniture is very useful. You use it to sleep or sit on or for storing clothes and other items or even for dining on. Any way, there are so many kinds of furniture that you can choose just the right furniture for your house, according to your taste and all. Well, today I am going to present a new kind of furniture that is very special and unique: hand-painted furniture. There are some people like the designer Jane Keltner who thinks that you can paint on furniture and get the most extraordinary results. She paints furniture for Brighton Pavilion and succeeds having great results.

She adds a personal touch to the pieces of furniture she paints and her models are mainly floral. The flowers and leaves she paints do not cover the furniture entirely, but are just small decorations in the most visible parts. This way you can turn an old chest of drawers , a bed or crib into a real piece of art. Feel free to visit the web site for more details.

A Small Rock Garden Design

Posted: 28 May 2011 10:22 PM PDT

When you have a garden at home you must decide what to do with it. You can use it only for barbecues and so you place a nice outdoor bench and swing or you can arrange a small rose garden in a corner or you can use it as a small beach around the pool and so on. One of the most convenient and also beautiful solutions even for small gardens is to build a small rock garden like the one you can see in these pictures. It’s not very difficult to design and build and it keeps its natural appearance, bringing a corner of the mountain view in your city garden.

You don’t need too much space so, once you have decided about the position and size of the rock garden you can start building it. It is pretty useful if there are any little “hills” of materials left from building your house because you can cover them with earth and use as part of the design. And the most important part is to find and bring some rocks from the mountains because it is better to look natural and your rock garden will not look natural if you use some round stones from the river or from the store. Then bring some vegetation that is also specific for this rocky area and arrange everything in a nice way.

As an extra bonus to this small rock garden you can add a little pond. Use some water proof material on the bottom of a hole dug in the garden and then fill it with water. Some water-loving plants will make the landscape perfect. So now enjoy the nice little mountain in your garden.
