Difference between leather match and all leather furniture

Posted: 21 Apr 2011 08:16 AM PDT

Leather has always been a popular material option for covering a wide range of furniture pieces starting from bar tools, sofas, dining chair, recliner and other types of casual furniture. However, many variations of the material are now available in the market that are literally identical to leather but are actually not leather. This makes it difficult for people to point out the differences between the leather match and all leather furniture.

Leather match furniture pieces are made of synthetic man made material that reflects the appearance as that of all leather furniture. Some common examples of leather match material are faux leather, vinyl, microfiber or suede.

The leather match furniture pieces are mostly available in all possible shades of color starting from intense red, citrus lime to hot pink. This is possible because man made material can be dyed and painted according to the requirements. Therefore, all the furniture pieces that feature odd and bright colors are very much likely to be made from leather match material and not all leather material.

There is a remarkable difference between the cost of the leather match and all leather furniture. The man made synthetic materials are retailed in the market for an average price of $11 – $12 per square yard, whereas the all leather material is not available in the market for less than $90 per square yard.

The comfort level of all leather furniture is much higher than the leather match furniture because the varied parts of the all leather furniture such as the seat, back rest, arm rest, cushions, etc are all made from pure leather. On the other hand, almost all the portions of leather match furniture are made from manmade material such as vinyl or faux. In certain cases, real leather is used in leather match furniture but that is restricted to the cushions and back rests.

Although leather match and all leather furniture are crafted to make them appear identical, but there is a big difference in their durability. Needless to be mentioned, but all leather furniture is much more durable than the leather match furniture. In fact, all leather furniture pieces are known to get better with age. On the other hand, leather match furniture loses its quality and appearance as it ages.

Versatile Dream Space Dome by David Trubridge

Posted: 21 Apr 2011 07:13 AM PDT

This dome, as the designer calls it, is a very surprising structure. First of all, because it's made of wood, only 5 mm thick wood which was thermally modified. It's plantation-grown pine which has been heated to make it more durable for the outdoors without using poisonous chemicals. This allows it to be flexible and also very light. The entire set would fit inside a suitcase. And yet it's very durable, strong and stable one the pieces are curved and under tension It has an oiled finish that brings out the natural color of the wood, in the same time adding even more durability.

The structure was built in six sections which can be easily taken apart for easy transportation. It's a great piece for the outdoors. It can be used as a beautiful gazebo or as a garden sanctuary, in which case a timber floor made from the same material can also be supplied.

There will also be added a fabric cover, which is still under development. It's a very interesting structure where you can refuge for a while and just relax and contemplate the nature.

Unusual transparent chair designed by Nendo

Posted: 21 Apr 2011 04:20 AM PDT

The Japanese company Nendo came up with this cool idea of designing a transparent chair. It’s a very interesting piece of furniture that doesn’t need to share the same color or texture as the rest of the pieces from the room because well…it’s transparent.

The chair is made from polyurethane film which is commonly used as a packing material for precision instruments and products that are susceptible to vibration and shock. It has a very interesting feature: it;s able to return to its original state and it’s very flexible. When incorporated in a chair design it creates a very fun piece of furniture.

When used, it wraps and supports the user’s body like a hammock, giving him a very comfortable feeling. It’s definitely an interesting piece that will generate a lot of contrasting comments. It will certainly become the focal point of attention. Also because of it’s flexible nature, it can be easily packed and stored somewhere when it’s not used. This way you can save some space. Have fun and enjoy.

Flower pot pendant lamp

Posted: 21 Apr 2011 01:26 AM PDT

Designed by Enzo Berti this pendant lamp puts together two essential features that you would never have thought could coexist. It's a pendant so it provides lighting, but it's also a flower pot, or it incorporates one. It' s combination between nature and technology.

Because it makes use of LED lights, it's not harmful to plants and it also uses less energy. The Eden flower pot has a very artistic design that would truly spice up the interior design of any room in the house. The combination of white and red it's a very successful one. And once you add the green of the plant it looks even better. Red and green are complementary colors so the color choice was very ingenious.

The pendant would be a very good choice for a living room. It will add some color and fun, being functional in the same time. You could also include it in the bedroom or even in the kitchen, although I wouldn't choose the last option because of all the steam and other things that occur in there while you're cooking dinner.

Instructions to recognize antique furniture

Posted: 21 Apr 2011 12:10 AM PDT

Antique pieces of furniture are timeless decorative items that reflect a unique and distinct style. More and more people across the globe are now looking for antique furniture pieces to spruce their home décor. However, very few people actually know what antique furniture is.According to the definition as well as experts, antique furniture is those pieces of furniture that are aged more than 100 years. In addition, furniture pieces valued for their unique workmanship and rarity are also often addressed as antique furniture despite of their age.

As antique furniture pieces are being copied amazingly to produce new pieces, recognizing antique furniture has become a difficult task. Professional dealers and auction houses also get fooled many times. Well, no need to worry.

Closely examine the antique furniture piece in bright light, such as sunlight. Try to look for any kind of emblems, marks or signs made by the furniture maker. The marks are generally in the form of label, stamp or hand written code and are generally found at the bottom, back, inside compartments and drawers.  Moreover, antique furniture will definitely show signs of wear and tear. So try and look for signs of aging. Some common aging signs are distorted polish, color bleeding and more.

Try to identify the material used for crafting the material. In 1800's, maple, oak, pine, birch, walnut, rosewood and cherry were the commonly used materials. In addition, wood is also known to shrink with age. So signs of shrinkage are generally found in all antique furniture pieces. If the furniture happens to be made of synthetic materials such as plastic than it is assured that it's a newly made piece.

Explore the finish featured by the furniture pieces. In the earlier times, oil and waxes were the common materials used for finishing. So, touch the paint to see how it feels. Oil and aged paint will definitely feel hard, whereas new paint has little tenderness when pressed.

Inspect the construction and hardware used in the furniture piece. Old screws and nails were never uniform, and they must have been blended with the wood with age. In addition, wood pieces were earlier joined together to form a furniture piece unlike the machine made furniture pieces available today. So asymmetrical finish implies that the furniture is antique.

Designed by Damian Cyryl Kotwicki this next house in Warsaw, Poland is a mixture of contemporary and classic elements. Built on a small site the house is simple in plan and form.

The materials used were brick, concrete, wood for warmth and titanium-zinc sheets. The outcome of using such a variety of materials is a beautiful, attractive place. This two-story house features a garage, open living area, kitchen, dining room, a lounge and lobby on the first floor, two bedrooms with bathrooms for the owners and their guests and an extra lounge on the second level.

Throughout the entire house you can see a lot of modern elements such as the funky light fixtures, the kitchen appliances, art work and some traditional ones like some of the furnishings. Moreover the circular staircase is located in the center of the house and is a beautiful structure. Although the house is siting on a 600sqf plot, it is a big, wonderful place where you can enjoy every moment with family and friends.{found on archdaily}

Fun yellow rocking chair

Posted: 20 Apr 2011 02:49 PM PDT

Designed by the BoConcept design team, this mustard yellow chair is a very nice piece to have in your home. It's extremely comfortable, not to mention good-looking. The two little round applications look like two eyes which makes the chair look very funny. It's like a huge smiley face that you can sit on.

To optimize seating comfort, the seat is filled with high resilient foam that has a very soft texture. It's very easy to clean: you can simply use the vacuum cleaner or cleaning products for more stubborn stains. Unfortunately the chair is only available in one color: the mustard yellow tone. I personally am not a fan of this color, but it could work with appropriate décor.

It's a very versatile piece that can be used in any room of the house, or even outside, in a protected area. It’s extremely comfortable plus it’s good looking. A combination that is not so easy to find.
