Budget bathroom makeovers

Posted: 15 Apr 2011 08:34 AM PDT

Doing an all new bathroom for yourself can be tough, especially if you don't know how to start up. The basic fundamentals are the funds and the time involvement of the makeover. We just can't do without our bathroom and getting it done is a real headache. You also need to make sure that you get it done with the best of manual help and the least of time involvement.

You need to plan the changes you need to make and also the new things you want to add. All in all, picture your bathroom as you desire, note the things you might need and then go checking for their price in the market. In there, you will also get hold off easy way outs, better usage, and low cost equipments.

Theme your bathroom and so the colors wont be a problem. The walls and lightning are really important; the rest of equipments like pipes, toilet seat, and bath tub can still be taken care off. For budgeting of the walls and lighting, which takes whole lot of money, can be easily done with substitutes like paints or low priced vinyl tiles.

If you really don't want to spend money and still want your bathroom to have a look of superior quality, spend time on its look. That is, the paints, tiles, floorings and the cabinet below the counter tops. Paint it according to your theme, aqua, and blue or may be darker shade of earthy tone, to make it calmer.

The floorings can be tiled or you may use pvc flooring sheets to avoid the floor look and so it can be used for everyday purpose as marbles can be an expensive treat. Also, to do the walls, or make it look interesting add a big mirror on the countertop and a lamp above it, which will make it look big and also fill it with light.

For the main accessories like shower tubs and toilet seats, you can easily go for- a not so ceramic and a more durable polyvinyl stuff. Toilet is the best place for most of us to relax, so you can always, make it cool by adding pictures on the walls, and toiletries on the counter top. It would also look decent if you paint your cabinets with a contrasting color and not use wood or other stuff as it would raise your budget double folds.

Fun turquoise wall clock for kids

Posted: 15 Apr 2011 07:20 AM PDT

At some point, every kid has to learn how to read the clock. And I'm not talking about electronic clocks but about the old-fashioned ones, the more difficult. So you'll have to explain to him how the whole mecanism works. It's not going to be easy, but it might be easier with a colorful and fun clock like this one.

It's turquoise so the kids will like it and it's fun so they'll like it even more. It has 11,5'' in diameter and silver arms with turquoise accents as well as silver hands. It requires only one AA battery and it's available for $21,88 (walmart). The numbers that indicate the hours are not present on the clock so that might be a problem for smaller kids that aren't still used with this type of clocks, but that problem can be easily solved with an art project that you and your kid can do together. Have fun and enjoy.

Glass star pendant for the outdoors

Posted: 15 Apr 2011 06:13 AM PDT

The outdoor lighting systems are primarily practical. However this doesn't mean that they can't look good too. Over the years we have learned how to successfully combine the aesthetic aspect with the practical one. The Reed Star pendant is a very good example in this sense.

It has a very nice shape, perfect for the outdoors. It creates a romantic and intimate atmosphere. It can also be used indoors but the effect is more visible when used outdoors, because of the star shape. The dimensions are 15'' wide x 4,5'' deep x 13'' high. It's made from a bronzed metal frame and seeded glass and it's available fir $129.

It's recommended that you seek the help of a professional for the installation. In terms of form and design it's a very simple piece. But when used outdoor the effect is very strong. You can have your own star without having to fly in space.

Ways to decorate your bedroom for free

Posted: 15 Apr 2011 04:21 AM PDT

Each one of us spends a lot of time in the bedroom. On an average every individual spends atleast 8 hours in their bedroom at night.  Budget constraints and shortage of time might come in the way of decorating bedrooms and often the main concentration is on other areas like kitchens, bathrooms and living rooms. However there are a number of ways in which one can decorate the bedroom without spending anything on it.

The easiest and the most hassle free thing to do is re arrange the things in the room. The bed can be rearranged and put anywhere in the room, diagonal or in the centre of the room. The room will get an altogether new feel by making these few simple rearrangements. One can also try and find fabric items which match or complement the colours in the room. One could use tablecloths, towels, scarves, pillowcases etc. Even a pretty scarf or shawl gracefully draped over the foot of the bed could look impressive. One could even wrap these items around cushions and pin them at the back. This will give them an entirely different look.

Plants could be used to liven up the bedroom. The extra plants around the house could be moved to a nice spot in the bedroom. For those who do not have any plants in the house, they are easily available in the market or one could even ask from relatives and friends. Some outdoor plants make great houseplants. Ivy and groundcovers are some examples. One could decorate them in nice pots and use such colours as would complement the bedroom colours.

One could get some old sentimental pieces such as a wedding veil or invitation, photographs, diplomas etc and display them in the bedroom. It will look great with these new accessories around. Potpourris are also great to keep around the house as they have a nice fragrance. One can easily make this at home without having to spend any money. Dry orange peels mixed with a pinch of sweet spices such as cinnamon, ginger and allspice make a great potpourri. Once it is made one should keep this in an open bowl in the house for that all day lovely aroma. During summers, one can use flowers to decorate the room. Wild daisies and roses smell wonderful and these could be used around the room.

If you want a house that provides the feeling of security, then take a look at the Safe House. This residence is siting on a 6,100 sqf plot at the outskirts of Warsaw, Poland, and was designed by KWK Promes.

The house takes the form of a cube and presents a lot of inventive features such as sliding walls and shutters, a roll-down gate and a system that allows the building to acquire energy during the day, which can be later used. At night this huge house looks like a sealed space, but when it opens up the eastern and western side walls create a courtyard. Moreover, all the movable elements are based on built-in electronic engines, which means that you can operate them safely.

Not only does the house provide safety, but it is also a modern place with open spaces and floor-to-ceiling windows that allow natural light to flood the rooms. Having all this and an indoor pool, the Safe House is an inspiring residence. With a home like this you can sleep peacefully.

How to divide a room without a wall

Posted: 14 Apr 2011 06:12 PM PDT

For people staying in lofts with a lot of open space everywhere there might not be a lot of privacy. Also for people with very large rooms, subdividing these living spaces without putting up a physical wall is a good option. Such rooms could be easily subdivided with dividers.

It is not necessary to spend money in order to buy a specific divider for the house. One can actually pick from the number of things which are already in the house. It is obviously easier to buy something specifically for this purpose which might be tailor made and also there are lots of options available. But a number of other creative options work as well.

For instance, a large kids room could be divided by hanging a bulletin board or a chalkboard from the ceiling and fixing it to the floor. Is such a way they will have that slightly added privacy from the wall and at the same time have a creative place to play. A line of colourful and attractive storage chests is another great way to separate one space from another. This also gives the kids a nice location for storing their books, toys, colours etc.

One could also use artificial trees to separate the living room spaces or use pieces of furniture such as buffets, sofa tables or couches to divide a space into different sections. Open bookshelves could be used too. These provide a little secluded area and at the same time could be used for storing books thus adding functional storage too. One of the most common methods is to use folding and freestanding room dividers which are designed specifically for the purpose of dividing rooms. There are different types available like the Asian themed ones and a number of other modern styles.

Another way of dividing the room is by using curtains. However, while using this methoda number of things need to be kept in mind. One needs to decide the length of these curtains, whether they should be all the way down to the floor or only a certain length. It is always easy to have the remote controlled curtains installed. One can choose any type of a curtain, from sheer to soundproof and use the same installation track. This is a much easier option as one can easily control the curtain with a touch of a button instead of operating it manually.

Cross Sofa by Elvis Pennetuzzo

Posted: 14 Apr 2011 03:30 PM PDT

The "Cross" Sofa designed by Elvis Pennetuzzo is probably the most versatile yet. It's made from four pieces, 3 of them are white and one is red, and they perfectly combine like puzzle pieces to create a very nice sofa.

The pieces are actually very simple and minimalist and the result is exceptional. It's definitely an unusual design. But in order to adapt to the ever-changing world that we live in we have to start with little things like this one. The sofa is very challenging by letting the user use his imagination and creativity to form new shapes. This way he never gets bored of the sofa.

Another great advantage is that when it's not used, the sofa can just be packed up to save some space. Then, whenever it's needed, whether it's for guests or just for fun, in a few seconds it's ready for use. It's a very fun piece of furniture with a very nice color contrast.
