| Stunning Mountain House by John Maniscalco Architecture:The Sugar Bowl Residence Posted: 06 Apr 2011 10:12 AM PDT Known as the Sugar Bowl Residence in Norden, California, this next house was designed by John Maniscalco Architecture. The house surprises by its dramatic environment and is an astounding building.
The architects had to take into consideration the dangerous snow blocks, however they managed to create an unique house, having as example an old railroad avalanche shed. The roof has a bent planar form that allows the snow to slip to the rear part of the structure. Moreover, the house is built on a concrete plinth, making way for the snow to rise around it.
The Sugar Bowl has two levels. The first floor houses the entry, boot room, children’s and guest bedrooms and service spaces. On the upper storey there is a variaty of living areas and the master bedroom suite. Throughout the entire house the homeowners can enjoy breathtaking mountain views.
With its modern, yet rustic vibe this house has the perfect interior color palette, that makes it a wonderful retreat.{pictures by Matthew Millman and found on contemporist} |

| Modern Murray Feiss Chandelier Posted: 06 Apr 2011 04:05 AM PDT Chandeliers are usually sophisticated and chic and probably don't think that they belong in modern spaces. But you might change your mind once you've seen this one.The Murray Feiss Chandelier is a modern approach to the classical design of this piece. It features six suspended cylindrical glass shades. The dimensions of the chandelier are 31″H x 30.25″W. The steel base and steel arms give this piece the stability it needs and the delicate and elegant finish really completes everything. In order to get it ready and working you will also need 6x 60W bulbs which are not included.
The entire structure has a sophisticated and modern look that would lighten up the atmosphere in an instant. It's an eye- catching item that would look very chic in a modern or even traditional living room. Elegance is still possible if you know where to look for it at resobable prices. |
| How to separate two rooms sharing the same walls with paint Posted: 06 Apr 2011 03:06 AM PDT Several rooms sharing a common wall is a common feature of open floor plans. If you wish to visually separate the rooms, then sticking a tape on the wall to divide it into two different sections and painting it in different colors will not work. In fact, it will look very awkward. The trick to separate two rooms sharing the common wall is to strike a balance between maintenance of the flow as well as breaking of the room into sections. And this can be easily accomplished with the use of paint in different ways.
1) Divide the common wall vertically into two sections with the help of a painters tape. Paint one section of the wall in a solid color tone. In the other section, apply painters tape horizontally at a distance of three to four feet from the ceiling. The portion above the tape needs to be painted in a darker shade of the color chosen, and the portion below the tape needs to be painted in a lighter shade of the color. This effect is perfect for separating a formal living area from an informal dining space.
2) Divide the rooms by creating a vertical stripe with the help of painters tape. Paint one section of the wall in chalkboard paint. As the chalkboard paint is available in grey shade, mix it with any other color shade and use this new created shade to design patterns and stripes on the other section of the wall. This effect is a fabulous solution for basement area where home office or gym shares the common with children's activity area.
3) A subtle transition may be created between two rooms by painting one side of the wall in several shades lighter than the shade used in the other section of the wall. Remember that the color should remain same and the difference should only be in between the shades. This effect works perfect for dining area and open kitchen plan.
4) Paint the room with two varied sets of stripes. Let the stripes in one section begin from the top right corner and in the other section from the top left corner. Allow the stripes to meet in the center where the room gets divided. |
