Planetarium set of 8 nesting bowls by Liliana Bonomi

Posted: 24 Feb 2011 11:03 AM PST

Bowls are very useful. They can be made of any kid of material from wood to metal, from ceramic to plastic and you can use them for lots of purposes, so I think they are a “must have” in the kitchen. I always need one and the perfect gift for me would be a set of different sized bowls that I could use for just about anything. Well, I found such a set of eight metal bowls designed by Liliana Bonomi.

These bowls are made of stainless steel and they come in different sizes, from very small to pretty large and they can be “nested”, meaning they you can place them all in each other and they will fit perfectly. In the end, when all the bowls are stacked on top of each other they will look like the Planetary System, with all the planet orbits. My guess is that this is the reason why Liliana gave them this name – Planetarium. You can now purchase the whole set of bowls for $551.

Where to Place the Family Portraits?

Posted: 24 Feb 2011 10:14 AM PST

Family portraits are great. If you display them at home or at the office, you feel closer to them and it takes only one look at them to feel better, no matter how busy or tired you are. But you can’t just display family portraits all over the place, as they are better valued if placed in certain places in the house. If you choose to display them at your office it’s a lot easier because you take one or two nice frames that go with the furniture in your office and place the portraits in, then on your desk, facing you as you are the one interested in seeing them. But if you are at home you can choose if you want them displayed in those frames that have a small leg for supporting them on your desk or you can hang them on the walls if they are bigger.

Usually the places of choice for these family portraits are the living room and the dining room because these rooms are the ones where the whole family gathers and spends time together, so many people can see them. If the frame is a bit bigger you can place the portrait over the fireplace and this is my choice, too. Another great idea is to place these family portraits on the wall opposite the entrance, on the hallway. This way all your guests and family members entering your house will be able to see it the moment they come in and they will feel comfortable and welcome.

Another great place for hanging the family portraits is the staircase. Just place some of them on the wall near the staircase and they will stand out by themselves. It is best to match the colour and texture of the frame with the furniture existing in the room where it is displayed , but if this is not possible or it’s a gift, go for the black frame, as it matches everything and it shows very well against a white wall.

Bedroom décor – getting a good nights sleep

Posted: 24 Feb 2011 08:26 AM PST

As new research reveals that two thirds of the British nation suffer from inadequate sleep patterns, we look at ways in which bedroom décor can help in creating the right environment to get a good nights sleep.

Beds and mattresses
For many people the root cause of sleeping problems comes down the very basics of the equation – comfort is essential for a good nights sleep. Beds should be long enough and wide enough to accommodate their cargo, whether that be one person, two people, or the whole family and the dog too. Mattresses are a very personal matter – hard, soft, NASA approved or horse hair – pick carefully and invest wisely, a good mattress should last 10 years.

Light and noise
Light and noise are two common issues implicit with insomnia – light pollution is a common issue in city enclaves but is easily eradicated by blackout curtains. Double glazing can provide a solution to noise pollution from external sources – if the noise is internal look at installing or improving sound proofing between floors. Getting rid of the clock that chimes on the hour every hour might also be a good idea.

Colour scheme
Colour therapists have proven that particular colours can encourage certain states of being, for instance pale green instils a sense of calm. As the bedroom is the place in which we start and end our days it can play a huge part in our state of mind – take a careful approach to choosing the colour palate for your space and select something that makes you feel safe, warm and relaxed.

Furniture and storage
The bedroom should be just that – the room with the bed in it, but quite often it straddles all manner of purposes, from home office through to library and storage shack. If space allows, computers and work stations should be removed all together, whilst clothing, books and clutter should be stored away – if space is squeezed, a screen is a great way to hide all the stuff you don't want to look at last thing at night and first thing in the morning.

Instil a sense of calm
It's a catch 22 situation – you're desperately tired and stressed, but can't sleep, which makes you even more tired and stressed, which means you're even less likely to get to sleep… we've all been there. Sleeping is about letting the body and mind relax and take some time out – instilling a sense of calm is the way to get there. Ensure there is a period of relaxation in bed before trying to go to sleep, invest in good pillows, a soft reading light and a bedside radio – and if you find you can't get to sleep, don't panic, just relax!

What Color Should I Paint My Media Room?

Posted: 24 Feb 2011 06:56 AM PST

Are you confused about the color to be selected for painting the media room walls? Well, it is doubtless that the selection of the right color of the media room is very important.  The right color can simply enhance the movie viewing experience.

Selection of the color for the media room is totally dependent on the type of media room you have. In simple terms, it depends on the characteristics of the projector installed in the room along with your specific requirements. For media rooms that are built to offer actual cinema effect, darker colors are the ideal choice because dark colors shall minimize the reflection of the room lighting as well as the projector light. This shall allow one to concentrate on the screen without any sorts of distraction. However, it is also very important to consider the tint of the color. Dark colors that are extremely vibrant should be completely avoided such as true greens, blues and reds. This is because, it is assured that there will be some reflected light of the ceilings and walls, and the reflected light would pick up the tint of the color and reflect it back on the main screen.

So ideally the best dark colors are the neutral ones such as grays, browns or flat black. Red can also be selected because the red color light reflected from the walls will be absorbed by the surfaces that come in the path and the light shall scatter.

The finish of the color should also be given equal importance as the shade selection. Paint colors with the glossy finish should be completely avoided. This is because glossy surfaces are known to be highly reflective. As a result, the light will bounce off from the walls and ceilings and directly lower the contrast of the projector. Ideally, the right finish to be selected is a flat finish or non reflective matte finish. This way you can lower the chances of light being reflected back on the screen.

On the other hand, if the media room features a television in the open then you should stick to dress the walls in light colors. The light color shall spruce up things and brighten up the area. In addition, the home theatre set up shall also stand out. Colors such as bright grey, lime yellow, soothing yellow or aqua blue would be the correct selection.
