Jubilee Armchair by Modloft

Posted: 06 Jan 2011 09:51 AM PST

The furniture that we use outdoors is a bit different from the one we have inside the house. One of the reasons is the fact that outdoors this furniture can encounter some factors like wind, rain and dust which can be very bad for normal furniture, so the outdoor furniture can support these pretty well. That is why it is a bit more resistant and made of some different materials. Let’s take for example the Jubilee Armchair that is made in Brazil for Luxo by Modloft.

This armchair is made of a stainless steel frame and the seating is made of wicker. It is a bit different from other armchairs or even chairs because it has a special angle of reclining that ensures the person who sits there with a great degree of comfort. The short legs are made of steel, too and are spread a bit wider than usual because of the unusual angle between the seating and the back rest. You can use it on the porch, in the lounge or even in the garden and you can buy it for about $500 on Yliving.

How to maintain a nice smell in your house?

Posted: 06 Jan 2011 09:10 AM PST

When you enter a house, no matter how small or big, how rich or poor, the first impact is the smell and only after that the visual impact. So you can say that you first “smell” a house and only after that “see” it. And if there is an unpleasant smell in your house the first impression will be bad, regardless of the amazing design and furniture or other characteristics of your home. So it is very important to always maintain a pleasant smell in your house. The first basic rule for that is to open the windows widely at least once a day, even in very cold weather, as this is the only way to make the stale air inside go out and replace it with fresh air.

Next you should take care to change the wet towels and the bed sheets regularly because they are the perfect homes for many germs and if you leave them in the same place for some time they will start smelling. They can turn into hosts for the mold and this is both unhealthy and bad smelling.

Keep the garbage bin closed with a lid and take it out more frequently in summer. Also if you have any family members who smoke, tell them to keep the ashtray on the balcony or on the porch or to wash it after each use. Do not leave cigarette butts inside the house, especially over night because the smell is awful. Instead you should place some fresh flowers on the table.

If you use the air fresheners you can buy in the store, try to purchase items that belong to the same brand and have the same smell because otherwise it would be just a huge mix of different odors and this isn’t pleasant either. I’s rather use some natural air fresheners instead like bits of orange peel, lavender or mint.

The toilet and the wet dusty carpets can smell awfully , too, so make sure you keep them perfectly clean and dry. If the carpet is a bit moist take it to the dry cleaner’s and have it cleaned and dried. Keep the food smell in the kitchen by having a solid door that won’t let it spread in the house and also by using a hood for your stove. These are just the basics, but they can help you have a nice smelling house.

What is a studio apartment?

Posted: 06 Jan 2011 07:46 AM PST

A studio apartment is a newer concept and is rapidly gaining popularity all across the globe, as apartments now wear an expensive price tag. Studio apartments, also known as a bachelor style apartment, efficiency apartment or a studio flat are small and self contained apartment. Efficiency apartment is the perfect term for studio apartment as a single unit of flat contains all the essential rooms found in an apartment without any barrier of walls or divisions.

A typical studio apartment is known to feature an area for sleeping, a living area and a kitchen area. The only separate room with a door in a studio apartment is the bathroom, which is often known to contain a number of closets. The studio apartments are a lot cheaper than the traditional apartments and possess their own distinct benefits and drawbacks.

Some studio apartments are also known to feature half dividing walls in order to separate the sleeping area from the other areas of the house. The half dividing walls are introduced with the intent of providing more privacy to the owner in situations when guests are expected to arrive. Apartments that do not feature dividing walls, in that cases owners prefer to add folding partitions to separate the sleeping area from the other parts of the house. The partitions used are attractive, and hence add to the décor of the apartment.

Besides the inexpensive price or rent, studio apartments are known to have lower utility bill than the typical apartments. This is because the studio apartments are small in size and henceforth, they are efficient. It costs less to heat them and the electricity bills of the studio apartments are also lower because the entire unit may be illuminated with a single light placed in a strategic location.

The only drawback of studio apartments is that they have limited space. Therefore, if a person wishes to store a lot of his possessions then he has to be highly creative in storing the items. Flat boxes that are designed to slide under the box would provide a ready storage solution.  Selection of the furniture and furnishings need to be given proper consideration as one improper selection will make the unit appear cluttered and smaller in size.

To conclude, it can be said that studio apartments are simply smart way of living especially for the future hi tech generation coming up.

Minimalist Living Room

Posted: 06 Jan 2011 06:20 AM PST

There is no such thing as the recipe for designing and arranging the perfect living room, Especially when we are talking about minimalistic living rooms. You can design such a living room by simply using your inspiration, taste and a few tips from us. But what is minimalist design after all? Well, it is defined by the name itself: it is minimalist. That means that you will have only the necessary things in the room, for example the chairs or armchairs, a sofa and a coffee table. The table must be useful, but not big, as you do not dine on it, but only have coffee or some snacks, so a big table might be out of place there.

All the rest is optional. You can also use a bookcase or some bookshelves, a nice looking shelf for displaying decorations, a huge plasma TV set and maybe a plant. That is all. All the furniture pieces must be simple, without adornments and other things that might show bad taste. It is all about simplicity that generates good taste design. The most important rule here is to use only the minimum necessary, to use only one, two or maximum colors in designing the room and also to stick to the simple things. No floral patterns, different shaped , stripes or some other crazy or very crowded things.

Normally this kind of room also includes the last minute technology, with huge TV screens, modern furniture and even the decorations are modern and simple like a vase in only one color and some spread round candles around. Glass coffee tables and futuristic chairs are a very good idea. The colors that are preferred for these arrangements are: black, white, beige, a combination of those or only one hot color like red or pink or maybe electric blue , but only if you combine them with the above mentioned colors.

How to make your home look bigger without pushing the walls back

Posted: 06 Jan 2011 06:11 AM PST

The property particulars put together by your estate agent will no doubt have the square footage of your home there, in black and white, for all prospective buyers to see. But no matter how diminutive your property, you can create an illusion of larger rooms and reduce those figures to mere numbers on a page.

1) Let natural light stream in: throw open curtains and raise blinds.

2) Increase the efficacy of doing this by ensuring window panes are sparkling clean.

3) Employ every interior designer's favourite trick – mirrors. Cunningly hung opposite windows or other mirrors, they will maximize a sense of light, airy spaciousness.Furthermore are a very important fixtures in our home. They helps us to look good every time we go out of our home.I preffer to use mirrors to decorate helping the house to look beautiful and elegant.

4) If procrastination is the thief of time, then clutter is the thief of space. A room with positively enormous dimensions will still seem smaller if it is chockablock full of … stuff. Pare your possessions right down to ensure that what prospective buyers see is the room, not evidence of the fact that you spent a year travelling through South America as a student.

5)  Pay attention to the dimensions of your furniture in comparison to the room it inhabits. Grand dining room furniture in a small dining space will simply look too big, thus in turn making the room look too small.

6) Also think twice when you buy furniture because if a house has too much furniture it can make any home seem smaller then it really is.

7)  Color is important for any room, but especially for small rooms. The color of your room can additionally make your area look bigger. White or neutral colors can brighten up your room making it appear to be bigger.

Making a house to look bigger it’s not a big deal but is one of the best ways to sell a house faster, if you use some of the tips you read here you will be able to make any room look a bit larger.

Difference between living room and family room

Posted: 06 Jan 2011 03:05 AM PST

Living room and family room are two of the most important pats of a house. However, it has been found that individuals are always confused between the two, and as a result the term is often interchangeably. However, the fact is that living room is poles apart from the family and there is a remarkable difference between the both. The difference between living room and family room lies in which portion of the house are the rooms located, how we use the rooms, and how are they designed.

A living room is also commonly addressed as a lounge, lounge room, and a sitting room. This is the room which is primarily used to entertain the guests and visitors, for reading and other activities. In most of the houses, living room is known to occupy the front area and as a result, it is also known as front room. In certain cases, living room is often connected to a formal dining room.

On the other hand, family room is a multipurpose and an informal room similar to the living room of a house. A family room is basically designed in order to provide the family members and their guests a place where they can gather and indulge in varied group activities such as reading, talking, watching TV, listening to music, and other common family activities. Generally, family room is located adjacent to the kitchen and in certain cases, flows into the kitchen also. A family room is often seen having a door that opens up in the garden, backyard, terrace, etc.

Family room

The distinction between family room and living room is also visible in the furniture and furnishings used in both the rooms. Family rooms are informal and are also supposed to be comfortable.  As a result, leather couches and recliners are often used in the family room in order to provide comfortable and cozy sitting. As the focal point of family room is entertainment, a music system and entertainment set can be seen. This is also the room where family portraits can be seen on the walls.

Living room is known to contain furniture's and furnishings that stresses more on style and design rather than function. Wing back chairs and sofas are commonly seen in all living rooms. Living room is also the room where you can see family heirlooms and fine art pictures displayed on the walls.

How to choose the right bathtub?

Posted: 05 Jan 2011 02:53 PM PST

Bathtubs are being used by humans since eternal years. Romans had already started using bathtubs since the year 500 B.C. To be very frank, a bathtub occupies a vital part in our daily lives. It helps you to prepare yourself for the day ahead and is also known to revitalize the spirit and rejuvenate the energy after a stressful day at work.

It is unquestionable that bathtubs are the best additions to all bathrooms.  Today, bathtubs are available in an array of varying designs, forms and styles. As a result, the task of choosing a bathtub is as confusing as selecting a candy from a candy store.

Below is a list of certain tips to assist you in selecting the right bathtub for you –

1) Set your budget – bathtubs are available in a wide variety of functions, sizes, colors and styles. Setting a budget before you start looking for the right bathtub will limit your choosing and prevent you from overspending.

2) Measure the available space in your bathroom – By measuring the available space in your bathroom, you will be able to ascertain the right size of the bathtub for your bathroom. Most of the people assume that bathtubs are meant for large spaces only. However, this is not true. Bath tubs are available for small spaces also. Assure that you have the dimensions of the available space noted in a piece of paper so that you can check whether a bathtub fits well in the measurement or not.

3) Select the right features – the essential purpose of a bathtub is for bathing but the modern bath tubs are available with an array of features. However, an extra feature simply implies more cost. You may be carried away by seeing the extra features, but you need to question yourself whether the features are useful to you or not. If they are useful and there are no sorts of space and budget constraints, then definitely, it would be worth an investment.

4) Choose the right material – most of the bathtubs are made of acrylic or fiberglass. However, many of them are also manufactured out of cast iron, steel and water proof mood. Select a material according to your taste and ambience of the bathroom.

5) Select a bathtub which is easy to maintain – Varied materials are known to repel soap scum and dirt to different levels. It is always better to select one, which requires minimum maintenance.

    Banjo Sleigh Bench

    Posted: 05 Jan 2011 01:11 PM PST

People live in houses and flats, depending on circumstances. Well , in my opinion those people living in houses are the most fortunate not because they have more space and less neighbours, but also because they can enjoy sitting in the open air. They relax in a rocking chair on the porch, swim in the pool, pick flowers in the garden and other relaxing activities that make you say “Thank you, Lord, for my house!”.

This nice looking bench is made of wood pine and has its name from the image that was wood burned in it. After it had been done you simply apply some transparent lacquer to protect it and preserve it for the future. The image is that of a banjo, of course, and it appears both on the bench and also on the matching table. The “sleigh” is made of little and narrow pieces of board that come together in a special way and make it look like a wave, like moving continuously. The great advantage is that you can use this set any way you want to. For example you can use it as an outdoor bench to sit on during the gorgeous nights with a full moon or during the day, but if you remove its legs and attach some ropes or chains you will have the perfect porch swing. You can buy it here.
