Makoto Yamaguchi is a young Japanese home designer who tried to obtain a very special place near the city of Tokyo, by designing a cafe and house to live in in the same building. The cafe is situated in the basement and the rest of the house is perfect to live in. The main idea of this project is to mingle nature with living space and the designer does that by arranging the house to have open spaces to the six small theme gardens projected around the building.

The designer wants to be as close to nature as possible, so it uses mostly wood in its rough form, being only painted a bit, but also in natural colors. Most of the rooms are very simple and have a minimalist design, using hard and durable furniture, made of wood, of course. And so is the flooring and the interior doors.

The rooms have very large windows that all have a nice view to the small themed garden that is either interior or exterior, but all combined in an intelligent way with the house space. It is almost like living in the woods, but having all the comfort offered by a modern house. But you can find more about it on the designer’ s person web site.

What is so special about the library in Almere in Netherlands? How to Beautifully Add Color to a Small Porch

Porch, which is an extension of an inner house, can be used as a living room if you initiate efforts to enhance its appeal.  A well decorated porch can be used as a social spot where you can chat with your neighbors and watch the kids play outside. Isn’t it true that rocking chairs remind you of your old grandma? Well, indeed , the collective memory remembers those old ladies dozing on the porch, in front of their houses, looking for grandchildren or simply watching the passers-by. But things have changed a lot lately for this useful and comfortable piece of furniture that used to comfort the old and the very young. Now you can see modern and stylized rocking chairs that are designed by famous designers and are produced by famous manufacturers. They are no longer made of wood and they no longer make terrifying sounds, but they are now made of black leather and stainless steel and look really cool in a young person’ s house.

The perfect example is this original and modern rocking chair designed by Ron Arad Voido. These rocking chairs caught my attention just because they are so unusual and unique, but showing good taste and refinement. They have an ergonomic design, as they have a special carving for the back which is designed to fit perfectly the human body and offer the maximum of comfort.

These rocking chairs are available in black and red, the color of the passion and that of the night and make quite an interesting pair to have around in the room. As you can see from the pictures, the chairs look more like a work of art than like a piece of furniture, but I would love to have one in my room or rather in the living room, in front of the telly.

Are waterbeds still on?

Some time ago people were really crazy about water beds. I guess it was somewhere in the 1990s when all teenagers were desperate to have a water bed at home and all young adults who moved from home purchased one as soon as they left home. I do not know if it is true or not, but I heard that water beds are still on. I mean if there weren’ t any people to buy them, there would be no offer on the Internet, right? And I have been seeing these ads on all possible specialized web sites.

I honestly say I would love having one of these beds at home and use them for jumping on them with my kids for fun when we get bored. But they are very good for your health, too. Unlike normal beds they do not have a mattress and these mattresses are not always very good, so you end up sleeping very badly. So I can see it is a whole lot better to use a waterbed if your back hurts, as you will feel no pain from the hard wood and will sleep like a baby as if you were swinging again and again by some invisible water waves.

There are now modern looking water beds that can be heated and have different designs and are a long way from the first water beds that had a hard framework made of wood and a rubber mattress filled with water. However popular they were or might still be, I would not like having one in my bedroom and accidentally leak on the floor and everywhere. I don’t think I would be very happy to gather so much water from under my furniture. So I’d rather have a bed installed in the middle of the pool where I can jump into the water and enjoy the sound of the waves.

How to bring more light into your house

I realized that it is very important to have natural light into your home after I moved in my own house and after I had damaged my eyes by reading a lot using bed lamps with very poor light. So now I am doing my best to benefit from the natural light of the sun for as long as possible. But I had to do some adjustments for this. So I want to share my experience with you in case you want the same thing.

Well, the first and most important tip would be to think of it before buying your house in a dark area, so you’d better start looking for sunny areas in your city or town. Then orientation is very important, too. If you choose an apartment facing north you will have a very dark home, so try choosing a south orientation, as you will have light there both in the morning and also in the afternoon.

But if your house is already bought and now you only want to make it have more natural light, then you should also think about the amount of money you want to invest in this project. If money is not a problem, then you should try to put in a skylight. This is the best solution for bringing more natural light in. Then you should try to make one of the walls of transparent glass, if possible, especially if you are facing the garden or the ocean. Or maybe build a wall that is made of glass bricks if you want to let the light in, but not to let the other peek into your house.

Remove the old and small windows and replace them with huge windows, having almost the size of the wall if possible. Then try to keep all the curtains as far away to the wall as possible, as they are very good at hiding things, light included.

Maybe you would not think of it, but try to wash your windows more often because the dust that covers your windows prevents the light from coming in.

Paint all the walls in the house in light colors, white if possible and try to purchase matching light color carpets and even bed covers and furniture – this will make the room a lot larger and more full of light. Keep as little furniture as possible and remember that all busy rooms make the light reach its destination a lot harder.

Well, if none of these tips have worked very nice on your home, you should consider moving closer to the Equator where people benefit from more hours of light and the sun shines brighter.

Snowman lamps

Well, today is the first official winter day and finally the holiday season is here. I know it’s a long way till Christmas, but I already smell the fir tree and enjoy the first real snow and can’t wait to play with my kids in the snow outside. I loved making snowmen as a kid and I still love this and these little men made of snow still make me smile. So I thought I would surprise my kids with a nice gift and buy them a snowman lamp. They needed a bedside lamp any way and this model seems to fit the season. And, besides that, it’ s fun, too.

I found out with this occasion that there are a lot of people who like snowmen and tried to use this idea into making funny looking lamps.
