Conch shell house

Posted: 14 Nov 2010 01:16 AM PST

There’s no room for ordinary in the world of art and in tourism. And when these two fields are combined, the result must be spectacular or else nobody would be interested in it. That is why the most exotic and unusual places on Earth and the most impressive hotels are the ones with the biggest flow of tourists. I found this unusual and incredible house that can also be rented by tourists that offers all these features: it has an unusual look, an incredible location – on the Isla Mujeres , Mexico, in the Carribean and all the facilities that guarantee a comfortable and pleasant stay.

People call it the “conch shell house” after the shape which was inspired by and looks exactly like a conch shell. It was designed and built by the architect Octavio Ocampo and is completely white. The architect respected all the details of a conch shell, including the spikes and when you see it you immediately want to see the interior because the human mind cannot imagine what it’s like to live in a shell that twists around its own core.

The inside of the house keeps the same conch shell theme and has all kinds of marine decorations : a wash basin in the form of a shell, faucets made of coral and coat racks made of real small conch shells and shell-like lamps and beds and … everything. The front room is the biggest and totally round and the stairs are winding and taking you to the other floors.

How to clean dirty toilet bowl?

Posted: 14 Nov 2010 01:16 AM PST

The bathroom is one of the most important parts of a house. It is the place used to groom and present ourselves. People all across the world spend thousands of dollars to design their bathroom but very few individual initiate sincere efforts to keep it clean and tidy. The worst and the most unpleasant part of a dirty bathroom is a dirty toilet bowl. Dirty toilet bowl is highly unhygienic and serves a breeding ground for germs. A dirty toilet bowl is known to be repulsive and unpleasant. However, it is not that difficult to clean a dirty toilet bowl as you may imagine, provided you know the right way to do it.

Here is a list of steps to help you clean a dirty toilet bowl –

1) Firstly, you need to decide on the cleaner that you are going to use. There is a myriad of commercial toilet bowl cleaners available in the market. Select any reputated one. Alternatively, you may also use chlorine bleach, acid or white vinegar.

2) Flush or rinse the toilet bowl and pour the cleaner or acid, etc, in a circular motion. Assure that the cleaner reaches the rim of the toilet bowl because this is the place where a brush won't reach that well. Let the cleaner sit in for few minutes. 10 – 15 minutes is more than enough. Remember that cleaners and acids contain harsh chemicals, so be careful not to splash them and also avoid contact with eyes or skin.

3) Once the toilet cleaner has sat long enough, the next step is to use a toilet brush to scrub away the dirt. Start with the rim of the bowl and slowly move downwards. In the bottom of the bowl, push the brush as far as it can go. After that flush the toilet and return the cleaning brush to its stand.

4) Lastly, put some powdered detergent or liquid soap in the bowl. You may also use laundry detergent as they smell good. The detergent or soap will help to get rid of left over stains and germs. Scrub the bowl and again flush or rinse the bowl.

If you follow the above mentioned steps, you will notice that your dirty toilet bowl will be as clean as if new. Finally, spray an air freshener as the smell of the cleaner or acid may surround the room.

Colored bathtubs

Bathrooms are considered functional rooms that can be found in the house because they serve a well defined purpose, but we do not spend so much time there. So they normally are as simple and functional as possible, usually white, but there can be variations in colors, too, depending on taste. But I think, as do many other people, that we should do everything we can to make this room also look very nice so as to feel comfortable and delighted when you are there. And , if you like simple things but want to bring a touch of color in your bathroom you can simply purchase a colored bathtub and pair it with matching sets of towels and you won’t need anything else more spectacular.

Or you can use these colored bathtubs to complete the whole theme design you chose for your bathroom. For example you can get a great effect by using a dark blue bathtub in a bathroom whose walls are painted in light blue , with a nice striped pattern in white and blue and a similar  pattern on the towel. You can admire it in the picture below, but you can use your imagination to make it look exactly the way you want.

Or maybe you have a more vivid personality and want to express it by painting the walls in the bathroom with a yellow and white chequered pattern, completed by a very yellow bathtub.

Sweet combination of pink and purple are perfect for ladies bathrooms and they don’t even have to be made of porcelain, as you can find some very nice and pretty bathtubs made of a thick synthetic material like a resistant plastic or something similar. For example this pink bathtub is shaped like a flower and designed by Yves Pertosa and it can be ordered with a smaller similar sink and you can add a flower shaped mirror and the effect is guaranteed.

For a stronger , more sensual effect you can combine the black shiny bathtub with dark red walls and black curtains.

Rustic living room ideas

Nowadays people prefer minimalistic and modern designs inside their homes and decorate them according to their tastes and money, of course. But sometimes, these styles just don’t fit your house and you have to find the perfect style that will both satisfy your view and be comfortable , too. Let’s take the houses situated near the mountains or woods or the little cabins you use only on holiday and, why not, the little towns houses and even the big ranches some of you might have. They simply can’t follow this line of home design fashion. And I think the most appropriate style for them is the rustic one.

The perfect rustic living room involves walls covered with wood and also furniture made of raw wood or at least having this color. It’ s all about comfort and being practical and suggests the old days when living was rough. The perfect cover for the wooden floor is a woolen rug or one that was woven with traditional patterns. Animal skins used to be perfect, but now the trend is to protect animals and use only imitations. Take a look at this gorgeous wood looking rug that fits perfectly this style.

Don’t go too far as to hang animal trophies on the walls, even if you are a hunter, as it shows cruelty. The fireplace though is absolutely a must for a nice looking rustic living room, whether it is genuine and totally functional or only decorative.

The floor can be covered with wood or stone and all the electronic gadgets that fill a modern persons life simply don’t fit here and you’d better save them somewhere else if you can’t live without them. The predominant color of the rustic living room is brown, but you can add some sweet shades of white, beige or crimson for making the place more lively. There’s no room for the tall chairs, but you should use sofas and small comfortable stools. Use only natural fibers in the room and you will feel closer than ever to nature.

What colors to use in the kids room

Posted: 13 Nov 2010 09:50 PM PST

Many people think that they should make their kids bedroom really colorful just because this room is specially designed for children. But some experts and psychologists say that a wide range of vivid colors only make the children tired and they will feel uncomfortable in their room. That is why my advice as a mother that has read a lot of expert advice, but has also seen that advice in practice is to paint the walls of your kids  in very warm colors – pastels. They induce a calm atmosphere and , besides, the toys that can be found all over the kids room are colorful enough. Take a look at this room in the picture that is prepared for kids. Would you like to live in there? I don’t think so. And neither would the children.

That being said I am all for pale shades of blue, green, beige and pink – if your kids are girls. And I also suggest that you should use some extra visual effects to match the color and that can be easily painted by hand. For example if your kids room is painted in light blue, just add some white clouds on the ceiling and upper part of the walls and you will see your kids will love it.

If you choose light green as the background, you can add some tall grass and even flowers and if your kids are able to draw – if they are in kindergarten already – maybe you can ask them to help you with this task and the satisfaction will be double.

For a yellow background for your walls, try adding some wheat, a sandy beach or sunflowers – if you are skilled enough or if you found some patterns. Every child is special so prepare a special room for yours.
