| Posted: 11 Nov 2010 10:34 AM PST The kitchen is the place where you can find the biggest number of utensils of all kinds, as you need a lot of them when you cook, when you wash the dishes, when you do all the house chores you need to do regularly, every day. And if you want to have a more personalized home, you can choose some of these tools to have unusual and funny shapes that will bring a personal touch to your kitchen. Let’s take for example the simple knife holder. In the past knives were stored together with the spoons and forks in a special drawer or even in special little suitcases, as in the past rich people used silverware. Well, nowadays we all have knife holders that are usually made of wood , with special cuts for each knife in the set.
But if you are a funny guy or have a healthy sense of humour and enjoy a piece of dark humour , then you will love this crazy human shaped knife holder I presented in these two pictures. It is called the Voodoo knife holder as a hint to the use of the Voodoo dolls in black magic. Legend says it that when you stab the doll representing your ennemy, they will suffer tremendous pain. The holder is made of metal , is available in more colours (silver, black and red) . It can be creepy if you are a sensitive person, but also funny, depending on the taste. You can buy one such piece for $69.99 on ThinkGeek.

| 7 Tips to protect your house from theft Posted: 11 Nov 2010 06:03 AM PST According to FBI, more than 1.5 million burglaries happen every year in United States. Thieves target cash, jewelry, electronics, and other valuables. For many families, it is much more than losses of money as thieves also steal sentiment things that cannot be replaced. Identity theft is also on a rise, and thieves are after financial records and personal information of individuals. There are numerous measures that can be initiated by you in order to protect your home from theft-
1) Invest in a home security system. Burglars and thieves are known to walk away when confronted with a home security system. Moreover, they shall alert you, your family and the police as thieves invade in. Home security systems are quite affordable and some companies even provide the unit for free in return of a monthly operating fee.
2)Cracked or broken windows are open invitation to burglars. If you have any of these in your home, replace them immediately. Moreover, also avoid placing your valuables near the window as it may tempt the burglars to break in. 3) Excellent exterior is very vital, especially if your yard is dotted with dark and shrubbery areas. You need not spend a fortune on these lights. Efficient flood lights shall do the needful. Motion sensing lights are also quite popular as they trigger with the slightest motion. You may also heat sensing lights that turn on automatically when a human body is detected.
3) Shrubs and overgrown trees can prove to be an asset to the burglars. Assure that you prune overgrown and large trees. Moreover, you may also use landscaping as an advantage. Try to plant some thorny plants and shrubs with prickly leaves around your apartment as a natural barrier to deter the thieves. 4) Try to keep all your valuables out of view so that they cannot be seen from the doors and windows. Moreover, avoid storing your valuables in obvious hiding places such under your pillow and mattress or inside a cookie jar, etc. 5) All the exterior wooden doors should be made of solid wood with at least 2 inches in thickness. Nothing can be better if you can install metal doors. 6) Doorknobs do not offer any reliable security. Install deadbolt lock in all the exterior doors. Also install peepholes in all the doors. 7) Make it a habit to lock windows, sliding glass doors and draw the curtains during the evening time and when you are going out. |

| The Gunnar’s Single Famliy House Posted: 11 Nov 2010 04:40 AM PST Designed by creators Huss Og Heim Architecture at Sterdalen in Norway, the Gunnar' House project is basically a single family house. The construction came up during the years 2007-08.Basic objectives of the client were preservation of the natural character of the site; at least as much as possible. Essentially it was preservation of the original timber frame construction. Some fixed constraints were also taken into consideration such as the 6" timber frame construction of the Gunnar's House. Other features that were retained were the levels as well as basement size and the terrain falling towards the southern part and building cantilevers beyond foundation of gable walls on both sides in the Gunnar's House.

| How to transform your basement into an extra room Posted: 11 Nov 2010 04:29 AM PST It's not an uncommon thing anymore for the families with small to medium houses to transform their basement into an extra Room. In fact, this kind of practice has been in the customs of the people even from the medieval times, when the basements from most of the houses and fortresses used to be transformed into some kind of safe places, where everybody could live without any problems. Though, when it comes to the actual transformation of the basement into a an extra room, just pulling out the closets and adding some furniture isn't enough. In fact, adding furniture is the last thins that should be done.
First of all, keep in mind that the basement was first meant for depositing things and not for living, therefore the conditions might not be the same as for the rest of the house. So, first of all, the walls should be checked, just to see if there is any water infiltration, and if there is, something should be made in order to dry the walls.
Secondly, check the floor if there are any termites. Not only that they can destroy the furniture, but they can also leave some bacteria that might be fatal for those with a weak immune system.
Ok, assuming that you have already pulled out all the furniture pieces before starting the first 2 steps, now it's time to design your room. Usually, the lightning system is weak in the basement, therefore you can start with adding a more powerful bulb or luster to the ceiling, and if it's possible, a new paint should be given to the walls. But in order to paint the wall, you should have at least a drawing with how your room should look like. Keep in mind that if there are stairs, bringing big pieces of furniture might not be possible. As well, keep in mind that as we are talking about an ex basement, the temperature might easily decrease during the nights, and during the cold season, therefore be sure to put a powerful heating device. As for the rest, let your imagination fly. Finally, check your budget and see what can you buy, and if you can do it, then it's time to add the furniture, but not until you've isolated the floor. After all, below the floor, there is the structure and the soil, therefore, an extra isolation will be needed. |
| Posted: 11 Nov 2010 03:16 AM PST Wallpaper – Is it out or in? – This is one question that millions of people all across the globe confuse over every year. And the strangest thing is, even though they have decided that whether they will go with or not, they still post the same question "Wallpaper – is it out or in"
To be very frank, nothing becomes "in" or "out" on its own. It's we who make them "in" and "out". Wallpapers have been used to dress the walls since 200 B.C. People all across the globe would use wallpaper to decorate their historic home or impart a particular period look to their house. The Victorians had a passion for wallpaper and used lots of it. Faux paint finishes are definitely "in", but they need to be applied in a professional and skillful way in order to avoid the amateurish look. However, exactly the same texture and effect can easily be achieved through the use of wallpapers. Wallpapers have also known to enrich the room as well as add elegance to it.
The thing that is out is the old design of the wallpapers like simple lines or checks. However, today wallpapers are available in a wide variety of textures, patterns and colors. You can choose between floral designs, geometrical patterns, landscapes, polka dots, plaids, and much more. Some of the latest wallpapers even boasts ribbons, sequence, lace and beads and hence adds more style and drama to the room. In addition, wallpapers are also available in texture. There are spit bamboo papers, cork, grass cloth and as well as 3D painted wallpaper with border.
On the practical side, wallpapers are an affordable way to create illusions and cover imperfections in the wall. Whether your wall has patched cracks, imperfect surface or old style paneling, you can easily cover it up with wallpaper. You can create a unique and distinct look in your home by clubbing painted surface with wallpaper. You can get all the walls of the room except one done in either paint or wallpaper and the left out wall can be done in one, which is not chosen for other walls. Wallpapers are no more limited for covering a wall. They look amazing on columns, and you may also apply cut pieces of wallpaper on lampshades, boxes and screens. It is up to your imagination and creativity to create a distinct look to your room. |
