Couple House On Punkinville Road by Norelius studio

Posted: 10 Nov 2010 10:17 AM PST

Built on the designs developed by Albert Putnam, Norelius studio, the house on Punkinville Road has project area of 2,464 square meters. It was created in the year 2008.Genesis of the project was derived from a couple who were the clients who lived many years in a treasured 19th century cape. The couple sought a significant change in their lifestyles. Norelius studio was the offshoot of such requirements.

Spectacular inland promontory that is on the ledge, blueberries with extensive views and juniper produce an excellent and unique architectural solution. The concept basically was of a perpendicular stacking of a couple of simple volumes that allowed relative smaller footprints on the pristine side besides providing some negative space.

Pink living room

Posted: 10 Nov 2010 10:12 AM PST

I don’t know who invented the rule that all girls should wear pink and all boys blue, but I do not agree. I think they all should wear whatever colours they like, regardless of sex. OK, I admit the only colour I wouldn’t recommend for a boy is pink, but I have no restrictions for the rest. However, lots of girls are simply crazy about pink and they wouldn’t wear any other colour except for pink. So they become teenagers and they tell their parents they want their bedroom or even the living room painted and decorated only in pink. Even when they grow up and become grown ups they still have some reminiscences and design their living rooms pink. I don’t think this is necessarily a bad thing, as long as they have a limit and a balance and do not exaggerate.

I mean the first rule is to be reasonable and do not cover the whole living room only in pink. Too much pink can be sickening. If you combine it with white for example then the effect will be much more tasteful and you will have a fashionable well designed living room. But if you choose everything from the colour of the armchairs and curtains to the colour of the flowers and pillows and the furniture – the result will be more likely a disaster than a success in good taste.

This well designed and nice sofa is the perfect combination between pink and white and it even has some flowery pattern on in order to be less monotonous. Though it is not too full of patterns and models. Simple designs express good taste.

And also keep it pale, especially when it comes to walls. The living room is not your bedroom where you can go crazy and paint the walls in any colour you want . Here you must allow all the people in the house feel fine and comfortable. So very light shades of pink are a good idea, especially combined with white curtains and maybe some light brown furniture and carpet.

If you are a more daring person or a more passionate girl, show it by adding some simple details like two vividly pink cushions.

Carpet and its types

Posted: 10 Nov 2010 07:30 AM PST

A carpet is nothing but a simple thing used as a covering for a floor. Carpets are also addressed as area rugs and have always been in the trend. However, in today's globalization era, the carpet trend has become more prevalent. Carpets are available in an array of varieties and types with each type catering to a unique purpose and need. It is very vital to know in details about the types of carpet before you purchase a carpet as a carpet is a considerable investment and offers long term services. Below is a list of different types of carpet –

- Woven carpet – woven carpet is very much similar to a woven cloth and is produced on a loom only. Different colored yarns are used to produce intricate designs and patterns. They are generally made of natural fibers such as coir, wool, jute, and coconut wood sisal. Women carpets are high in quality and extremely durable. However, they are very expensive due to their slow manufacturing process but are known to impart a royal and aristocratic look to the room.

- Tufted carpet – tufted carpet is produced on a tufting machine where tufts of yarns are inserted through a fabric backing. Either single color or non colored yarn is used. If non colored yarn is used then the carpet is dyed and then printed. Since these are produced on the machines, the production process is quick and the carpets are cheaply priced.

- Needle felt carpet – The needle felt carpet is technologically advanced carpet. It is extremely durable as it is produced through electrostatic attraction of individual fibers that combine to form a unique carpet. This type of carpet is quite popular in venues such as business arenas, hotels, restaurants and places that are subject to a lot of traffic. Needle felt carpet is expensive than the other varieties. The top manufacture of the needle felt carpet is china.

- Flat weave carpet – flat weave carpet is produced by interlocking waft threads and warps. There are two types of flat weave carpet – tapestry weave and plain weaver. However, flat weave carpet is one of the most uncommon types of carpet and is usually found in North America and Japan.

- Hooked carpet – Hooked carpet is the most simplest carpet that is manufactured by pulling strings of cloth like wool or cotton through the meshes of sturdy fabric. Basically, these are handmade carpets.

Electric Vs Gas stoves

Posted: 10 Nov 2010 06:24 AM PST

Whether in the form of a cook top, built in range or free standing range, everyone needs a stove. The two commonly used forms of stoves for households are gas stoves and electric stoves. Electric stoves have been recently invented but gas stoves have been in use since decades. However, it is very difficult to compare them and point one as the best because both boast their unique features.

Here is a detailed comparison between electric and gas stoves that shall help you in selecting the best type according to your need –

a) Definition – Gas stove is a conventional type that uses compressed gas as a fuel. The gas needs to be ignited near the outlet of gas with the help of a matchstick or a lighter. On the other hand, electric stove is made of metal coils through which current flows. The heat is transferred to the cooking utensil through radiation or convection.

b) Cost – when considering the purchase cost, electric stoves are much more affordable than the gas stoves. However, when considering the operating cost, the gas stoves are more affordable as gas is a cheaper fuel than electric energy.

c) Efficiency – when it comes to efficiency, both the stove types have their own pros and cons. Though electricity is a cleaner fuel, but food cooks better and fast at gas stoves as it allows an even heat spread. The cooking can be started immediately in gas stoves as gas heats up instantly but in electric stoves, cooking can only be started once the coils are heated.

d) Convenience – Cooking on a gas stove is very convenient as the cook is allowed to control the amount of heat to be imparted to the cooking utensil. Moreover, gas stoves have sealed burners, which are very easy to clean in case of spills. On the other hand, electric stoves are equipped with detachable drip pans that need to be cleaned regularly and also becomes dirty and dull with use. Another drawback for an electric stove is that it cannot be used during power failure, whereas gas stove can be used to cook food anytime.

e) Safety – A lot of safety needs to be ensured in the gas stove as any leakage might lead to a dangerous hazard. With gas stove, one has to install gas detector system. On the other hand, electric stoves are much safer as one there is no risk of leakage.

Colourful lamps from Svenssons i Lammhult

Posted: 10 Nov 2010 05:06 AM PST

I know that many people prefer colourful walls and I also know that many believe in color therapy that claims to influence our behaviour and mood according to the colour that surrounds us. And I also know that kids’ room is supposed to be full of colour and toys, but everything is in theory. Practice has always shown us different aspects from theory and I will explain. I prefer all the walls in my house painted in white and this is not because I have some colour phobia or because I work in a hospital (I don’t). I simply want white walls because I have two small children who are very playful and always find something interesting to write on the walls and also there are a lot of unfortunate events that end up with big ugly stains on my walls. So I have to paint them at least three times a year. That is why I want them white. But I also like some colour in my life and I try to compensate that by adding funny and coloured furniture and lighting in the house.

So I discovered these nice colourful lamps on a Danish web site and they gave me a pretty good idea about how to cheer up a totally white and dull room. Take a look at this picture and tell me if I am right or not.

Add some different colour chairs and some nice fruit on the table and you will feel more cheerful and start smiling out of the blue. So these guys from Denmark teach us how to create a merry welcoming atmosphere with only a few details.

Sweetcake baby bathtub from Beerd van Stokkum

Posted: 10 Nov 2010 04:16 AM PST

When you have a baby you are very happy that a new family member has appeared and everything seems nice and pink and beautiful. But apart from this, there are so many complications in your life once the baby is born! You must change your life style completely and even your house in order to make everything right for the little being. Let’s take for example the daily evening bath! You can’t use the normal bathtub for that because it would be giant in size when compared to your precious baby and totally improper for babies. They can slip and get hurt , so they need special bathtubs that are tiny and nice, colourful if possible to make them feel happy and comfortable.

This is how the idea of making a multifunctional colorful bathtub first came to Beerd van Stokkum‘s head one day. So she designed a very nice looking baby bathtub that is shaped like a cupcake. And since all children certainly love sweetcakes, I bet they will be immediately attracted to this baby bathtub. It looks familiar and also brings them joy by being so colourful, that they will certainly love to take a bath there. And it is very important to make them love bathing because it is beneficial for the long term, developing a very healthy habit.

These attractive baby bathtubs look like cupcakes and are made of a nice, eco-friendly material that can be reused and recycles. But what’s more you can use it in many ways: it’s the perfect bathtub for your child, as it is made to fit its tiny size and it’s perfectly safe for the kids, then you can use it as support for the flowers in the garden and even for depositing the sand for your children’ s sand box.

You can use it for depositing the just dried laundry or for gathering the kids toys when they are all over the place. It is not as dangerous as the usual bathtubs where the children can get hurt if they slip and it is very easily placed anywhere in order to store them when you no longer need them. If you have more than one such sweetcake bathtub you can put one on top of each other and have a coloured stack of bathtubs. You can also use them as a home for your pet – either a dog or a cat and, if you want to make them even more comfortable, just put a nice soft pillow in.

You can order them directly online if you visit the producer’s web site and you can choose one of the many colours available.

Decorate your home with indoor plants

Posted: 10 Nov 2010 03:32 AM PST

If you want to decorate your home in a natural way and infuse a fresh style then there cannot be any other better option than indoor plants. Indoor plants are ornamental décor items that are known to add a splash of green color to a neutral space and also improve the air quality of the room. You can place them in empty corners, windows sills, shelves or as center pieces or room dividers. There is a myriad range of indoor plants available in the market that is known to suit every style. The most remarkable feature of indoor plants is that they happily grow in all areas, whether small or big along with whatever conditions of warmth and light you provide.

Here are some general guidelines for decorating your home with indoor plants –

- Firstly, you need to choose a room that you wish to decorate with indoor plants. Indoor plants look stunning in all parts of a house. You may decorate your kitchen area, bathroom area, entrance, or living room.

- You need to select a plant friendly space in the chosen room. Avoid placing the plants near a fireplace, heater or in a cold and drafty space. Assure that the chosen spot receives plenty of sunlight in order to promote a healthy photosynthesis process.

- Thirdly, you need to decide on the type of indoor plant. There is a wide variety of indoor plants available in the market. However, you should select a hardy plant that can thrive in indoor conditions. Popular indoor plants are Aloe Vera, bamboo palms, cactus, bonsai, paper whites, begonias, geraniums, cactus, ivy and philodendrons. If you are decorating the kitchen area then herb plants such as oregano, thyme or basil will be an ideal selection, whereas if you are decorating your bathroom then any green leaf plant placed in terracotta pots will create a spa like look.

- The indoor plant must be placed in a decorative pot in accordance with the overall décor and ambience of the room. If your bedroom features an artistic look, then you could settle for hand painted ceramic pot. For a modern and sleek look, a shiny silver or matte black pot shall work amazingly. Glass pots also look very elegant in living rooms or dining areas.

- Use multiple plants and that too in varied sizes. For an interesting look, place a number of odd plants in a corner.
